Material Balance Unit Operation In Food Processing Exercise

In its first month of operations, Giffin Company made three purchases of merchandise in the following sequence?

Total units bought= 330+430+530 = 1,290
Units on hand at the end of the period = 230.

a) Ending inventory under FIFO (First In First Out Method) will be from the batch of 530 that cost $8 each = 8 x 230 = $1,840

b) Under the LIFO (Last In First Out) method, the ending inventory will be from the batch of 330 units which cost $5 each = 5 x 230 = $1, 150.

FIFO and LIFO are alternative methods of accounting for merchandise purchased, at different times and prices, and put in the store for a period before being resold or use for production. FIFO assumes that items are used in the sequence that they are purchased i.e. the items bought first are sold/utilized first. LIFO assumes the opposite i.e. the more purchased items are used first.

In a business that experiences increasing input prices (inflation) FIFO will tend to have relatively lower cost of goods sold (or lower direct material cost) but relatively higher ending inventory value. LIFO figures are the opposite i.e. higher COGS but lower ending inventory.

Ending inventory is the merchandise on hand at the end of the period valued as demonstrated above. It is also the amount shown on the current asset side of the balance sheet.
