Military And Past Mental Issues

How to take care of mental health in the military?

Im in the Air Force and have anxiety. Its gotten pretty bad and i want to get some help. Im a flyer so im afraid if i get medication I won’t be able to fly anymore.

Can I join the US military with a history of being in a mental hospital?

Your prior drug use might be as big an issue toward preventing you from joining the US military as your prior mental problems would be. Admitting that you overdosed on drugs would be a red flag to recruiters and to the screeners at the MEPS (where you are checked prior to military service) and that alone might be enough to deny you enlistment.I would suggest first talking with a psychiatrist before you talk with recruiter and getting an assessment from that person on whether or not you might be suitable for military service. This can save you time and possible embarrassment because recruiters aren’t going to consider your feelings when you discuss your personal issue with them. If the doctor suggests that you consider other options, you may wish to listen to him/her.If they don’t, then you should approach a recruiter and be honest about your past. This is because if you are honest LATER, it’s likely that it would be poorly received as you will have lied on your military paperwork and that is a federal offense. If they tell you that your past problems will prevent you from serving, I would suggest accepting that graciously and moving forward with your life.

Us military mental health waivers?

if i used to take antidepressants and anxiety meds for a little over a year before and one month into the age of 14, and have stopped taking them 3.5 years before trying to enlist, would I be able to get waived? or any good chance whatsoever of getting waived?

Have you been mental health discharged from the military?

I reported my depression, suicide ideation and plans I had to commit to medical and they re going to have me be evaluated. If it results in my discharge what will the consequences be? Will I ever be able to recover and find a job or will my discharge make me unemployable?

How hard to you believe it will be to get a waiver for past mental health issues in coast guard?

As they said, you could LIE. Remember, our military actively is seeking convicted felons and foreign nationals (non citizens) to fill the ranks. You must ask yourself why.

With 150,000 Iraq war vets being treated for depression, and within 5 years of the end of NAM 150,000 vets committed suicide, perhaps the military is not your best bet.

It is courageous of you, and honorable to consider the military. However, I would argue that your courage and honor be used to service people closer to home and further from the control of politicians. Perhaps you would be a great police officer, or fireman. In these honorable careers you get to help your community - and more importantly in my view - avoid direct command from politicians who make wars and the millionaire generals who carry them out using the lives of our soldiers at the expense of our taxpayers.

Can you join the Army if you have a mental illness, such as depression?

Im a 14 year old female. Im diagnosed with bipolar depression. I've been depressed for 3 years now. The doctors said this is something i will carry with my entire life. That it will never go away. I want to join the army after highschool. Will my depression prevent me from joining?
