Mini Cooper Insurance

Insurance on mini cooper?

I pay $100 a month to insure my Mini Cooper, but I'm 32 years old. You will be charged a lot more for being a teenager. Driver's ed and a decent GPA will help, but you're still probably looking at insurance payments that will be at least $200-$300 a month. If the Scion is a cheaper car, it will cost less to insure than a Mini. We don't buy Minis cause they're cheap. We buy them cause they're awesome.

Are mini coopers expensive to insure?

Yes. They are basically BMW's underneath.

Expensive to maintain and fix.
Expensive to buy.
Expensive to insure.
They require premium gas.
Seats are uncomfortable, especially for whoever sits in the back.

Insurance companies raise the prices if a car has:
-Supercharger
-Turbocharger
-2 doors(including weak, slow cars like Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Accent)
-RWD
-more cylinders=more expensive. V6 is more than Inline-4.
-Higher trim=higher price(S, SE, Type S, Type R, Mazdaspeed, Nismo, GT, EX, etc.)
-And cost of car to fix and maintain and buy.

I have driven the Cooper S Supercharged. It is a fun car to drive since it handles like a go-kart. Just very expensive.

Totaled MINI Cooper. How does insurance value it?

This will depend on your particular insurance policy and the scenario, and of course the state you are in.

Typically, insurance companies will use an appraisal service, that is roughly based on what the bluebook says, but you're not necessarily going to get "retail" bluebook. Expect to be nickled and dimed on everything they can. They will deduct for upholstery, worn tires, etc...

If you are talking about the other vehicle's insurance paying your damages, you need to watch out for their policy limits. In California, it isn't uncommon liability policies to have a $5,000 policy limit for property damage, but some may have more. That means, if you want more, you will have to sue the other driver and home they have money to pay.

If you are talking about getting paid from your own "collision coverage" policy, then there might be a maximum limit to what they will cover. The language usually says something like "the lesser of actual value or $xxxx dollars." On top of that, there might be a deductible.

Keep in mind that you should receive an amount that includes sales tax too! Also, the property damage settlement is negotiable as with everything else, so don't be afraid to speak up and ask for more if you don't feel the amount is fair.

Also, occasinally there might be "gap coverage" which means the insurance will pay off the loan even if the amount you owe is more than what the car is worth.

What car insurance plan should I buy for a 2001 Mini Cooper that is fully paid for and high miles? Liability or Full coverage?

This is more than just a premium vs car value question. One must also consider the owners ability to replace the car. Insuring one’s own screw ups can be expensive but losing the use of a car can be adding insult to injury. If you can afford a $1000 loss but not a $5000 loss (if the Mini is worth $5000), you can likely get affordable collision coverage with a $1000 deductible. Ask the difference between different deductibles and decide how much risk you can afford. If you can afford to replace the entire cost of the car and you know you are a safe driver, you could drop collision coverage completely. I suggest keeping comprehensive as it covers glass, theft, fire, break ins, and things flying through the air into your Mini. Use it to keep your windshield in good condition. Pitted windshield glass can be a safety issue.

Mini Cooper as a first car??

I will be 16 next week and therefore am looking for a first car to drive. If possible, I don't want some typical mundane civic or something that every other person drives, and I think the Mini Cooper is the perfect option. Reasonable price, good company (my dad has a BMW, which makes minis, and its amazing), good mileage, and of course cute and stylish. But I need two things, 1) a way to convince my parents that its the perfect car and 2) opinions on it as a first car. I haven't completely made up my mind so any advice or suggestions would also be appreciated.

Thanks! And a best answer will go to a truly helpful response, should there be one

Is a mini cooper s considered a sports car for insurance policies?

Not at all.

2006 Mini Cooper for 17 year old?

Um, maybe the fact that if you get hit you'll most likely get turned into a pancake?
Believe me, I think the mini coopers are cute too, but I'm getting a used Volvo from like 1998 with my own money
Much much MUCH safer

Best insurance for young driver?

State Farm is not necessarily "very expensive" for young drivers. Every person's price is going to be different. Also, if you stick with State Farm, you should qualify at the level of your parents, and get at least multicar discount, if not some other discounts. State Farm also offers several discounts for youthful drivers. I am speaking of experience in the US, but the rules I assume are similar.

It also depends on if you are going to want physical damage coverage for the car itself. Also, you are looking to get a newer, slightly higher end car - be prepared to pay the premiums no matter who you go through or get a cheaper, older car.

Call your parents SF Agent and get a quote - ask what discounts are available. You may be pleasantly surprised!
