More Proof That Bruce Arians Is Going To Be A Failure In Az

Why didn't the Cardinals draft a quarterback with the fifth pick of the 2011 NFL Draft?

The only quarterback (outside of Cam Newton who was already drafted No. 1 overall) considered worth taking that high was Blaine Gabbert of Missouri.  Gabbert did not have great numbers in college and is considered far from a sure thing. Also, Patrick Peterson was considered one of the best cornerbacks available in recent memory and he can return punts/kicks.  He is considered a very safe pick, and the history of highly drafted defensive backs is excellent compared to other positions.   And perhaps most importantly, playing in such a weak division the Cardinals knew they had a chance to compete for a playoff spot this year.  They also knew that Kevin Kolb was available for trade.  Even if he is nothing more than mediocre, Kolb almost definitely gives the Cardinals a better chance to win this year than Gabbert would.  In the end, the Cardinals traded a second-round pick and an inconsistent player with alot of potential (Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) for Kolb and took Peterson 5th overall.  I think they did the right thing, but I'm not a huge Kolb fan and think they will want to upgrade at QB in the next few years.
