What is causing my Ford Focus to make a noise for 5 minutes after turning the engine off?

This is pretty difficult to diagnose based on your description. What year is the car and which engine does it have? Can you give a description of the noise and what volume it is? What part of the car does the noise come from? To be blunt, I’m tempted to downvote the question for giving so little useful detail.However, there are a couple of things that come to mind.If it’s a turbo, most modern cars have a pump that will run to circulate coolant through the turbo so residual heat doesn’t cook the oil into a solid and cause blockages in the oil passages. Also, if it’s a gasoline engine, some newer cars will run a pump that puts pressure on the fuel system and fuel tank to check for leaks. This is for emissions purposes. Finally, I believe some of it might have to do with the high pressure fuel pump on direct injection cars.In any event, many modern cars have systems that continue to function for a few minutes after the car is shut down. If the sounds are fairly quiet whirring noises and they’re consistent every time you shut the car off, don’t worry about it.

Here is how you can correct this problem without causing your battery to die.Method 1:Turning the Theft System Off from Inside the Car1 Check for a light on the dashboard. It will say System on "Theft System" or something similar.2 Make sure nothing is loose if you tried to take anything apart.3 Check to see if the battery has not been drained. At that point the car will not do any thing, except make a slight effort to start. If the battery is dead, ask someone to help jump start it for you.4 Place the key in the ignition, and turn it slightly to the right. This is also known as position 2, in which the car is on but the engine is off. This gives power to the necessary components to allow this method of bypassing the alarm to work. When you turn the key the radio should work, and the dash lights should light up.5 Keep the key that way for ten minutes, maybe a little more. The theft system light should turn off, and the car can be started.Method 2Turning the Theft System Off Outside of the Car1 Insert the key in the driver's side door. Even if you have a keyless entry, you'll want to use the actual, physical car key and place it in the lock on the outside of the driver's side door.2 Turn the key and hold it. The alternator is failing or has ceased functioning. Whereas the engine's torque is usually giving your car constant electricity using the alternator, when it fails to do so the battery's reserved power is then used. Usually the battery is only used to start the vehicle. It obviously has enough power to spark the plugs, but only for so long, especially if you are also running your radio, A/C, headlights, etc. Once the battery is dead, the car is dead.This happened to me more than once. The alternator has a finite life in every car, so there comes a time when it will die, and it will almost certainly not be at the most opportune moment. Recognize signs of this happening before it is too late. Mine was failing for months before it inevitably gave in and I finally figured out what was wrong. A similar issue is if your serpentine belt snaps, the engine is no longer running your alternator, whether it's in good shape or not. This will cause more issues than the car just dying in five minutes- the water pump will cease functioning to cool your engine down and you will eventually overheat it and perhaps irreparably damage the vehicle.There are possibly other things that can cause this issue but this seems by and large the most likely.
