My Ankle Has Been Swolen For About 3 Weeks

Why is my leg swollen after 3 weeks?

A heavy piece of drywall hit my leg 3 weeks ago. I was able to walk on it the next day without it hurting at all. (Just hurts when you touch it) A couple days later it swelled up really bad, and bruised under my ankle and around the area that got hit. I didn't stay off of it because it didn't hurt. But it's been three weeks and it is still just as swollen. What's wrong with my leg? is it worth driving 30mins to go to the doctors?

It's been 5 weeks, and my ankle is still swollen? When will it end?!?

It maybe a stress fracture, if you do get a xray they are hard to show up on em

My ankle has been swollen for 2 weeks?

In many cases you can first use the PRINCE approach to treat your ankle:

* Protection. Use a protective brace, such a brace with a built-in air cushion or another form of ankle support.
* Rest. Use crutches until you can walk without pain.
* Ice. For at least the first 24 to 72 hours or until the swelling goes down, apply an ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes every hour or two during the day.
* NSAIDs or acetaminophen. NSAIDs (such as Advil and Motrin) are medicines that reduce swelling and pain. Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) reduces pain.
* Compression. An elastic compression wrap, such as an ACE bandage, will help reduce swelling. You wear it for the first 24 to 36 hours. Compression wraps do not offer protection. So you also need a brace to protect your ankle if you try to put weight on it.
* Elevation. Raise your ankle above the level of your heart for 2 to 3 hours a day if possible. This helps to reduce swelling and bruising.

Proper treatment and rehabilitation exercises are very important for ankle sprains. If an ankle sprain does not heal right, the joint may become unstable and may develop chronic pain. This can make your ankle weak and more likely to be reinjured. Before you return to sports and other activities that put stress on your ankle, it's a good idea to wait until you can hop on your ankle with no pain. Taping your ankle or wearing a brace during exercise can help protect your ankle. Wearing hiking boots or other high-top, lace-up shoes for support may also help. But use caution. Don't force your foot into a boot if you feel a lot of pain or discomfort.

If your ankle is still unstable after rehab, or if the ligament damage is severe, your doctor may recommend surgery to repair the torn ligaments.
What kind of rehabilitation program should you follow?

Rehab exercises can begin soon after the injury. You can try to walk or put weight on your foot while using crutches if it doesn't hurt too much. Depending on your pain, you can also begin range-of-motion exercises while you have ice on your ankle. These exercises are easy to do-you just trace the alphabet with your toe. This helps the ankle move in all directions.

Ask your doctor about other rehab. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal totally and may prevent further injury.

Can I still have my ankle be swollen after 1 month of a sprain?

An ankle can be swollen for a very long time after an initial sprain depending on how severe the initial trauma was.
Standing all day at work will cause slight edema (swelling) in a healthy ankle. A recently injured ankle much more so. A diet high in sodium make the issue worse yet. Same for any reason that causes you to retain water or fluids.

Consistent, high doses of ibuprofen or other NSAIDs do help reduce swelling but it also can take a toll on your stomach and kidneys.

RICE or PRICE is very effective at reducing swelling.

Rest - Get off your feet as much as possible. Take breaks at work and sit down.

Ice - 10min on, 10min off. 2-3xs per day. Esp. after standing at work all day. It should feel like a drug killing the pain almost instantly, and helping to reduce the edema (swelling). Putting the ice on should be an "aaahhhh!" moment.

Compression - like an ACE bandage or one of those neoprene sleeves. Also helps to keep the swelling from occurring in the first place.

Elevation - keeping you foot above your heart is best. Well you can at least keep your foot up on breaks or at home even if it is not above your heart.

I've now seen a P as in PRICE added to the front and that is for Protection, but an ankle brace without compression will not help keep the swelling down, but it will help prevent future sprains.

DO STRENGTHENING EXERCISES! It sucks. Its time consuming. But its also super-important.
When there is minimal swelling, do some of the exercises in the two blogs I attached below. Ice afterwards, especially if you start to see some swelling. Don't over do the exercises initially, and you'll know if its too much by tenderness and swelling.

Good Luck and I hope you feel better

Should my foot tattoo still be swollen after 2 weeks?

2 weeks ago, I got a chinese symbol on the top of my foot. It was swollen at first and went away mostly but certain parts of it are still really red and swollen. Parts of it have scabbed over or peeled and don't hurt at all anymore. The parts that hurt the worst and are swollen are near my ankle and my toes on the outer edge of my foot. The skin around it is swollen and hurts and the entire foot itches like crazy! Shouldn't the swelling be gone mostly now? I have taken care of it like I should, wear flip flops. I wasn't sure if it was infected or if I may have had a reaction to the ink. I have one other tattoo on my right ankle from 12 years ago and never had this issue. Help, I have a vacation coming up and I need to be able to walk!

Why is my sons ankle still swollen when he sprained it a week ago?

Likely normal. But, that’s a great question for your son’s medical team, as they are privy to specific details that no one else on Quora is. Why not give them a call in the morning? If your son has not yet had occasion to see his personal physician about this, or there are other concerns, and it is not healing at the rate which you deem normal, then a visit may be in order.

It's been 6 days now since I sprained my ankle and it’s swollen and bruised with a little pain. Is this normal?

On numerous occasions, I’ve seen clients that have sprained their ankle, completed multiple visits in physical therapy and they still have a considerable amount of swelling.By definition, a sprain is a tear to a ligament. Ligaments also have a poor blood supply. Which means that they will take longer to heal.Another thing that I’ve consistently seen with clients that didn’t have a tremendous amount of pain but still have a lot of swelling weeks after they roll their ankle is that their shoes were forcing them to distribute more of their weight to the outside of their foot.Even without an injury, doing any activity in shoes that force you to the outside of your feet is not only much less efficient, you’re also more vulnerable to rolling your ankle. This scenario is more commonly seen with “stability” running shoes, running shoes where the cushioning system is worn out, or with any shoe that has orthotic inserts. All of which places more stress on the soft-tissues on the outside of your ankle.Even though you hear so much about ACL tears, the ligament that’s most often sprained is located at your ankle (i.e., the anterior talofibular ligament).Talo represents the talus. Which is a relatively small bone that is a component part of the two joints that make up your rear-foot. And fibular represents the fibula, the smaller of the two bones that make up your leg. Your fibula is also a component part of your ankle joint.

Should I go to the doctor? My ankle has been hurting for 3 weeks.?

Sounds like you're right, and it is sprained.

Actually, there are differing levels of severity with sprains. Each level deals with effects to the different tissues involved.

In a typical sprain, the tendons that bind the muscle to your bone have been stretched beyond their capacity, to one degree or another. tendons are made of of cartilagenous tissue (like cartilage) that isn't supposed to stretch. Only the muscle can do that.

This can also involve the ligaments, which are cartilagenous tissue that binds bones directly to other bones. When this tissue stretches it is very painful and oftentimes results in a surgical repair.

The next level involves both tendons and muscle tissue, and is more severe because it affects both types of tissue.

The most severe type of sprain involves not only the ligaments, tendons and the muscles, but also blood vessels. When the blood vessels that feed the tendons and muscles become twisted and stretched, they can become very flacid, disallowing the passage of blood properly through them. They can even rupture.

Sometimes it's okay to take care of ourselves because we know that our body will repair itself. Other times, we need assistance in order to heal properly. This is one of those times we may need assistance.

Elevating the affected area, and icing it down will help with the swelling, and the return of fluids back to your core. However, you should also seek the advice of a physcian just to ensure that some other, more serious problem hasn't occured.

Just because you don't feel like it is a serious injury does not necessarily mean that is true. Your ankle needs to be x-rayed, and then examined by a physician in order to make sure you are okay, and that no other measure need be taken to assure your rapid return to good health.

Hope that helps answer your question.

I still have a sprained ankle after 3 weeks; does it get worse when I walk too much?

I have sprained my ankle. If you went to clinic or hospital or clnic they likely said to follow “R.I.C.E"Rest the area of injuryIce lowers the swelling and inflammationCompression like from wrapping the ankle so n Ace bandage and using an inflatable splint to limit movementElevating the injury with pillows, above the level of heart when laying supineLikely X-ray photos were taken.Crutches to stay off that ankle, putting no weight on it, and wearing a splint, and wrapping with Ace bandage was something I had to go through for at least 3 weeks.Once I accidentally struck a doorway with my injury. Speaking of the pain aside, I could tell that smack at the right point lengthened the time to heal. I learned (and was told) essentially that walking on it only increased the time necessary to heal; that it may never heal, or heal correctly, if I could not allow the injured area the peace and rest necessary to heal properly.Crutches suck but they help you keep the injury off the ground and that ankle from walking. One cannot wince and bear an injury like that hoping to “work through it” without treatment of some sort.
