My College Dropped Me From A Course Saying I Didn

How mad were your parents when you failed a college course or had a low gpa?

My parents were very upset and disappointed. I was extremely involved on campus the semester I had a low GPA. I knew that my grades were not going to be the best but I had no idea how bad they would actually be. So i told them before my grades arrived that they shouldn't expect excellent grades. But when the grades came they were very upset. They told me that I have to pay them back for that semester. I tried to explain to them that I learn a lot about myself that semester. I tried to say that I learned about my limits and how to judge situations better, etc.

You should try to talk to your instructors to see how you can get your grades up but you have to be honest with your parents if you tell them ahead of time they won't be as upset.

I have decided I want to drop out of college even though I am very close to finishing. My family is concerned I will encounter a lot of trouble progressing in my career but I disagree. What should I do?

Let's say I'm a VC and I hear your great idea that will make the world a better place, earn lots of revenue for investors and give you the reputation of a modern day demigod. But wait, you had 6 MORE MONTHS TO FINISH SOMETHING AND DIDN'T COMPLETE IT??????  How the f*** would I trust someone who doesn't understand the opportunity cost of completing his degree to be in a better place in life.  Why would I invest millions of dollars in your idea if you had a HISTORY OF GIVING UP BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO DO SOMETHING ELSE BEFORE YOU FINISHED????This topic just pissed me off.  I have immigrant parents and they spent A LOT OF MONEY PUTTING ME THROUGH BERKELEY.  This money was about 1/3 of my father's take home pay and I was the first cousin on both sides to go to such a privileged school.  I got two F's while I was going there and was so scared to be such a bad example for my family that I swore off all social life (including potential girlfriends) just to get through school.  I was mentally numb when I graduated but just to hear my Dad tell me how proud he was of me MADE UP FOR ALL THE MENTAL ANGUISH I WENT THROUGH.Now in my advanced age, my CS degree has opened a lot of past and future opportunities.  Google, Salesforce, Facebook and MANY STARTUPS still call me to see if I'm open to new opportunities.  NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I DECIDED TO QUIT AFTER GETTING Fs IN COLLEGE.  If anything, getting an F (or two) taught me to fight to get what I need for my family. It doesn't sound like you have the fight to finish what you started.  Go ahead and quit.  It won't be long before you find out that hard work early in life means an easier life later vs. easy work early in life means a harder life later. Give your parents the respect they deserve and FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED!!!!!

I'm being charged for college classes I didn't attend?

Back in July I signed up for part time college but got into a car accident so I didn't get the chance to drop any classes. I got a letter saying I owe $1,320 for the two classes I didn't attend. When I called the tuition office the lady told me even though I didn't attend the classes I still have to pay. I asked her if there is a way to not pay and she said unless if I file an appeal for an accident, etc. i have a chance of not paying but she said it's highly unlikely. I didn't mention I was in an accident though. If I don't pay she said it could be taken out of my taxes but I told her I don't work and she said the payment will be put on hold plus an extra $200 and I won't be able to attend any other colleges until it's a paid off. I'm really overwhelmed right now. I don't work and I have no money at all. Will this ruin my credit? And do you think I should file an appeal? Please help thanks! I live in MN btw

How do I tell my college professor I dropped his class?

Ok, so I'm 18 years old and currently attending community college. I dropped a small business marketing class after 1 day. I realized that it was irrelevant to what I actually wanted to do and it wasn't even required toward a degree in communications (what I'm thinking of majoring in). It just seemed that I didn't belong in the class. So I dropped the class after a few days of thinking it over and got most of my money refunded. So now I think it would be right to email my teacher and tell him the news. I want a good DIFFERENT excuse as to why I had to drop his class and one that's not too personal. I'm thinking something towards work because he knows I have a job. What do you think I should tell him in my email? And please, no "the truth will set you free" preaching. The man doesn't know me and doesn't give a rat's *** whether I was in his class or not.

Why did you decide to not attend or drop out of college?

As a frustrated student of the education system, I think I am eligible to answer this question. I firmly believe 12 years of schooling plus 4 years of college does serious brain damage and one has to be unschooled after all the schooling that has been done. Most graduates are not employable because they have to be ‘unschooled’. They are not fit for jobs that actually require them to think. You can say they have been institutionalized. It is becoming increasingly clear these days that one does not necessarily need a degree to land a job because these degrees don’t really mean anything. The college tests you on your memory and how many books you can take in in a semester. And in the Indian context it would be how many books you can memorize. This mere memorization of facts bores students. There is no point in accumulating data, all the things that are there in the books can be googled. But google cannot apply the data, students are made to take in loads of information but hardly taught how to apply what they are learning. Colleges kill ones creativity an environments that breeds boredom through boring lectures is no place for creativity.Because of this even intelligent students fair poorly in tests because they hate the testing system too. All it is doing is testing their memory!Compulsory attendance policy is another bullshit. In the age of youtube and google it is ridiculous to ask students to maintain a certain attendance percentage. I mean why force students to sit in lectures? If interested they would sit and if the lecturer is good they would definitely sit. However most of the time the teachers are bad and they just end up wasting the student’s time who are present only for the sake of attendance. If they want to learn anything there are hundreds of courses online and an infinite amount of help available. The teacher is not the only source of information.Another interesting take :There was a video on why the average millionaires GPA is 2.9.This is because the rules in the real world are not well framed. Where as rules in institutions are to be strictly adhered to. A 4 point something gpa person would strictly adhere to rules in college however when in real world he would be confused because there aren’t many rules there.Since colleges and schools tend to be highly authoritarian and most geniuses are rebels they are not a great fit in institutions.Derek Magill here also has some really valid points which I do not wish to re iterate.

How do I tell my parents I'm dropping out?

I moved out of state , this college isn't for me BELIEVE me they're bible courses type of stuff, I didn't realize this was how it was gonna be until I got here as I didn't visit the university first, There is no alternative options for courses but studying the Bible and I do NOT wanna waste my time and money here , but the problem is I have yet to tell my parents that I wanna move back home , I did pay for this semester so I mean , it can't be too bad but they literally have no idea how I feel , I never tell them anything about it when I'm on the phone with them so It'll probably come as a shock to them . How should I go about doing it ?
