My Desktop In Linux Mint 15 Is Unresponsive I Cannot See My Desktop Background And Cannot Change It

Does anyone actually use desktop Linux?

Yes, and proud to be the only student to use Linux at school.Including changing distros for almost 1 year.I come to Linux by just wondering over a netbook running Ubuntu in an electronic store. Well, Windows XP-7 were common at that time in my country, and thought "Why it runs Ubuntu?"Later, I searched for "Ubuntu" in Google and looked at the live demo. There, the demo mentions very few programs that I know such as Firefox and VLC. I also tried to download LibreOffice (4.x) on my Windows 7 Starter laptop, and still lacked of features.Well, things are changing now, when I decided to dual-boot Windows 7 with Ubuntu last July. I was not familiar with any command line until changing with other distros as well.I managed to use different distros, from Unity, Pantheon, Cinnamon, LXDE, KDE, Budgie, GNOME to XFCE. GNOME on Manjaro is more lightweight than Ubuntu, as Manjaro requires a minimum of 8–10 GB.And Linux gave me some “weird” advantages:Say goodbye to borrowing laptops. When someone tries to borrow mine, he/she just wondering where Microsoft Office, Google Chrome, even the Start Menu are. Wait! This isn't Windows!Work differently. Well, most distros does not include most known fonts from Arial, Calibri to Comic Sans. Now, I prefer using Source Sans Pro and Merriweather for my documents.Free Software! I mean, create PDFs and take pictures for free. If you notice, pre-Windows 8 webcam programs are basically trialware and malware. Not to mention Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) installed.Unlocked features. Did you know that Windows 7 Starter has its own limitations? One of them is not able to extend the desktop on multiple monitor. Apparently, it works well in all Linux distros I tried before. As of now, none of my friends are interested to Linux, and I am planning to use Linux for larger events.Update 1: Linux installation is faster than Windows XP!I tried an installation of Windows XP (SP3) and Linux Lite 3.4 in 2 separate VirtualBox VMs (2 GB RAM, 20 GB Virtual Drive each, using Intel i3 processor). Linux Lite, though requires higher storage capacity, takes only 15–20 minutes to install. At the other hand, Windows XP takes about 30–40 minutes. In older computers, they require more than 1 hour just to install Windows XP.

How do I resolve the issue of laptop getting hanged while working on Android Studio?

I can suggest you a few tips that would make the working of Android Studio a bit lighter.First of all, make use of the power saver mode in Android Studio (File -> Power Saver). It reduces the load on the CPU by disabling mist of background processes. Also make sure you don't have any unnecessary applications running in the background in your PC.Another option is to follow these steps.Create a new project and wait for it to get compiled and ready.Or open an existing gradle built project.Go to settings -> search for gradle. You will find the gradle configuration page.Tick the offline option so that Android Studio doesn't need Internet connectivity to build gradle.Another option is to turn on the virtualization in BIOS. Check your laptop guide for the same.Lastly, I would suggest you use a linux installation to run Android Studio. It works much smoother in linux. If none of the above works, it's better to upgrade your hardware for a better experience.

Green lines are appearing on a laptop screen. What is the problem? How can I resolve it?

The image which we see on our screen is a result of many tiny pixels that creates a perfect blend of colors to generate it. Every single pixel in the display is made of three subpixels which are red, green, and blue. Small transistors inside the screen electronically trigger the correct color which collectively displays a picture. When these pixels stuck on a particular tone, then it will appear as a single dot on the screen whereas if the number of stuck pixels is high then, it will surface like a green line on a laptop screen. Now, before deciding to replace your laptop screen you can try some methods which can help you in resolving this issue on your own.· Ensure the source of a problemTwo components can be responsible for green lines which are LCD screen and the graphics card. Each part has a different process of repair. To find the source, first, try a different monitor to check whether the lines appear on a new display. If they do, then the graphics card has malfunctioned. Second, examine display settings and alter them if they are not ideally set. If both the things are not at fault then probably the issue is with a display.· Pixel pressure methodStuck pixels can get back to normal operation by applying gentle pressure. Here you can use a piece of tape to highlight the area where a green line on laptop screen has appeared. Now with a soft cloth, you have to employ moderate pressure to the stuck pixel line after turning the system off. Make sure that you don't press it hard otherwise the problem will get worse. It will tenderly flex the screen material which will make the pixels to shift from permanent “on” position hence resolving the issue.· Update the driversOutdated drivers can also lead you to a green line on a laptop screen. Here you have to check the driver versions for graphics card and LCD. If there are updates available, then download it and keep your OS updated as well.· Color cyclingQuick cycling of the colors can fix stuck pixels. It helps in removing "kinks” out of the subpixels which brings them back to normal condition. You can do this with the help of programs which are available online as free downloads such as Jscreen Fix, Undead Pixel etc. The process can take up to 20 minutes to an hour, but it will fix the issue. In case if the problem persists, then it will be wise to contact a repair service provider as an expert can lead you in the right direction if you can't find a solution.

Why does Linux seem so much faster than Windows?

NTFS and the NT filesystem stack. Even when using another filesystem in NT it is still way slower than Linux file-systems. Even the Linux NTFS driver is faster than Windows NTFS.Optimized software. Microsoft and most Windows developers has no need to optimize their software. They are charging more for their software than what most of their users spend on hardware. So they can always refer their paying users to the “but more hardware” solutions. And the OEM users that complain that their low budget PC is slow? Well they bought Windows Home as well, and will probably not buy the full Office suite. Linux on the other hand has developers that care about optimization and they chose to spend time on it for various reasons. This doesn’t only apply to the Linux kernel but also most applications that run on Linux.Server vs Client markets. On a client the per client cost of adding more ram or going for more CPU power are generally not that great. On a server serving perhaps thousands of users you may already be on the top of what hardware you can buy. It doesn’t become a question of how much you can upgrade your computer but instead it becomes about how many server buildings you will need. So for developers and end users like Amazon, Rackspace, Google and even Microsoft themselves, the efficiency of Linux and it’s server software becomes important.Hardware vs Software profit margins. This is going to answer the question of why Mac OS is faster than Windows. Apple sells computers and every cent they spend on adding performance to their hardware comes out of their profit margin. In Q3 2018 Apple sold 5.3 million PC:s with OS X. Now if they can fit OS X into an Intel processors that cost $1 less then that is 5.3 million dollar in that quarter. And with DDR4 memory costs requiring 8GB instead of 16 GB of memory is going to be billions in extra profit margins. Microsoft on the other hand doesn’t profit from making Windows more efficient, unless more people buy their product. Because their product doesn’t include hardware. HP and DELL may profit from this but not really. Because unlike Apple they have competitors so they would just ening up selling the hardware at a lower price.Or let me put this another way. If Apple make OS X more efficient then they save money. If Microsoft make Windows more efficient then YOU, the consumer, save money. One of these are going to influence corporate decision making.
