My Ear Cartilage Is Infected And I Took The Earing Out

What should I do with an infected cartilage piercing?

First its important to drain out the pus believe me! press on the piercing and compress it with clean hands untill all the pus comes out. For some back bumps filled with pus just pressing doesn't work.Soak your ear with a cotton dabbed with saline solution. After that massage the opening area of the piercing while compressing it with your fingers. Massage in circular motion. But with CLEAN hands! Continue compressing and messaging untill pus comes out fully. Then clean the ear again. Automatically the swelling will be reduced. The infection can be either due to some dirt stuck or because you are using the wrong jewellery.

How do you treat an infected cartilage piercing?

Do you know it's infected? What is your evidence for it? Chances are it is simply irritated and has healing difficulties rather than being infected.Infection in piercing is a truly dangerous thing but luckily it is very rare and ALWAYS has the same symptomsGreen plasma or pus around the site or dark black tissue (not just white or yellow- White and yellow pus is a normal thing)Extreme pain (like extreme not just itchiness or soreness)Discolouring of your skin from rashes to dark purple colour appearing around not just the site but expanding away from itIf you see these signs or symptoms then yes it is infected. Go to a hospital immediately as it is life threatening. If of course you don't see these signs (and as a professional of over 6 years I never ever have) you simply have irritation and you have either misdiagnosed infection or heard that diagnosis from a friend or a professional who doesn't appreciate body modification(this is so super common)So don't fear- go see your piercer and make sure you clean it using warm mild saline and nothing more! (Maybe change your earring too)

Heal the infected cartilage piercing or take it out?

I had my cartilage pierced in October. It was healing fine and after a while, it looked completely fine. But since the past few days, it has gotten really red, pulses, and even formed a Keloid. Then, it started bleeding, producing pus, and all that.
I know it got infected, I tried a billion things. I don't know what to use on it.

This morning, I soaked it in very warm salt water that I made and then put a droplet of hydrogen peroxide on both sides of the piercing. (I know its bad to use it, but I felt like I needed to since it looked so bad). After, I inserted the stud with soaked hydro.peroxide. I currently do not have a back screwed in. I only have the stud in. It has swollen up and I'm afraid the back will hurt it even more.

I have a headache from it. I'm all paranoid that I'm gonna die from the infection since its on the cartilage and its close to my brain or whatever. Idk, im weird. But somehow I heard you can die from it. Ahh, someone help!

What do you think I should do?

Thanks :(

Infected cartilage piercing?

Okay, you're doing a few things very wrong:
1. Taking out a healing piercing. You're irritating the hell out of it which, in turn, leaves it open to infection
2. Assuming the untrained bimbo who gunned said piercing (Claire's/piercing pagoda/anywhere with guns and no hygiene standards, ja?) actually knows what she' talking about. Cartilage piercings take a n absolute minimum of 3 months to fully heal, the average is around a year
3. Using the 'ear care solution' those places hand out. Depending on where you went its either a useless solution that might as well be water or a strong disinfectant that'll just kill off the healing cells. All you need is sea salt solution, here's some very basic aftercare: http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Pierci...

What you've got is called hypertrophic scarring; it's very dense scar tissue and can easily be cleared up with warm compresses, tea tree oil and chamomile teabag compresses (instructions: http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Chamom... ) it's usually caused by some kind of pressure on the piercing, the most common culprit tends to be those butterfly backs. Here's a bit more info on the subject: http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Hypert...

Get yourself down to a piercer who actually has a clue what they're doing (ie. a tattoo studio) and ask them to chance it to a labret stud (here's what they look like: http://piercingmart.com/uploads1/piercing/gem14-labret.jpg ) it's a much more suitable piece of jewelery and will help with the pain and healing as the back will sit flat against the back of your ear and won't get caught on anything. It might be an idea to pick up a labret retainer (which look like this: http://image.bizrate.com/resize?sq=160&uid=32180032&mid=60636 )while you're there too; they're clear so you can switch to that during gym and your teachers will be none the wiser

ETA: In regards to what others have said:
- Doctors know **** all about piercings, you might as well be asking your postman. If you have a problem piercing then get yourself down to a reputable studio
- Peroxide, alcohol, surgical spirit, any kind of drugstore product (neosporin, bactine, that lot) are horrible on a well healed piercing, let alone a new one. All they'll do is kill off the cells and prevent propper healing
- If you're actually dumb enough to go for that 'string with a loose knot' idea then you deserve what you get

Cartilage Infection? Should I Put My Earring Back In?

Um, well I'd love to know whether you got it by gun or needle. I have a cartilage piercing and I got it by gun (which I now know was the wrong decision). If you got it by gun the lumps that are appearing could be cartilage damage. I have a huge lump at the back of my cartilage piercing because the gun shot the earring through and blew some of the cartilage out of the back, causing a lot of infection, which could be what you're lumps are on your piercing. I also stopped cleaning mine after a while and it hurt a lot after a while and it did get infected. I took the earring out and it closed up, and then I got it re-pierced. If it's badly infected or only hurting a little bit, clean your jewellery and put it back in. If you keep it out and allow it to close, the skin will close up around the infection causing sore scar tissue (which I received in my third lobe piercings, still closed up). I hope that helped. :)

What is the chance of a cartilage getting infected?

Well, if you do get your cartilage pierced, I have two main pieces of advice:
-make sure to clean it EVERY day, twice a day, just like they tell you. (I tried to slack off, and my ear is still infected, 8 months later)
-DO NOT get both ears pierced at the same time, even if you intend to get them both pierced at some point. Cartilage piercings aren't like lower ear piercings--they leave your ears alot more sore. Mine would hurt just from something as simple as my glasses brushing the back of the earring. I made a hasy decision and got both pierced, and I couldn't sleep for 3 days (because I sleep on my side, and I couldn't lay my head down).

If you stick to the cleaning instructions they give you (and keep cleaning them AT LEAST once a day even after the 2 months is up and you can take them out) they have little chance of infection. If you don't, you're in trouble. I got my ears pierced in january, and if I forget to clean them, then they'll go back to infected, but as soon as I start again, the infection goes away.
It really takes a year for cartilage to fully heal, so make sure to keep cleaning them every 1-2 days until then. (especially after shampooing).

And make sure you get a professional to pierce your ears, so that you don't hit an artery, or get an infection from unsanitized tool. =) Other than that, you should be fine.

hope that helps!

I removed my infected cartilage piercing!?

should i try to put it back in? it was throbbing and superrrrr swollen. pus was leaking out of it but when i took it out, it stopped hurting and a lot of liquid drained, there is still puss inside though. it still hurts if i push on it. what should i do?!? please&thanks (:

My ear piercing got infected. I took out the earring and now there's a bump.?

That bump is scar tissue, which honestly will probably never go away. Actually, this same exact thing happened to me. I just got my ears done in 5th grade, and we played dodge ball in the gym and the hit me right in the ear. Scar tissue formed, and there has been a small bump there ever since. I doubt your ear is infected if ..
1. It is not red, leaking green/yellow/black fluids
2. Itchy
3. Smelly
There's not much you can do for scar tissue, unless you get it surgically removed. There are home remedies on google that claim work, but I never noticed a difference.
You're fine though, and don't need to see a doctor. I don't think you have to repierce your ears either just to drain them, but you can repierce them when they're healed again and you're ready. It will just hurt more because of the scar tissue.

My cartilage piercing is infected. How do I remove the infection without the piercing closing?

What works for me is a salt water soak. Get a small bowl and fill it with boiling hot water and dissolve some salt into it. Wait until the water cools enough so that it doesn't burn your ear. Then using a cotton wool ball soak it in the water and place it on the site of the infection (do not remove the earring) and hold it there! Much love—Crystal
