My Elderly Male Guinea Pig Wont Eat Or Drink

My 4 year old male guinea pig won't eat?

I noticed last night that my guinea pig wasn't eating at all, nor was he drinking any of his water. I don't weigh him, but he doesn't feel much lighter, if at all. I took him to the vet today and all they did was clip his teeth and claws, they said that he may have an URI, but he should be fine and if he gets worse to take him to an exotic vet. He won't touch his favorite veggies or drink the water even when I put it up to his mouth or on my finger. All he's doing is laying in his little wood hut, sleeping. I don't know what to do? Will he get better? Should I try something else? How do I get him to eat or drink? Might I add that I took him outside the other day to sit in the lawn and eat grass.

HELP! My guinea pig wont eat or drink or move!?

The vet should always be your first priority, but I think it may be too late for that. I suggest getting a soft towel and folding it twice, then laying your guinea pig on it so it's comfortable. Then dip a Q-tip in a bowl of water and put it to its mouth so it can lick it. At this stage I don't think he would be able to eat anything, so don't force anything. Please do not listen to the answer above me, it is absolutely the wrong thing to do. You will only put him in more pain.

My guinea pig had a very similar case to yours, where he was completely paralised and couldn't move, but his leg twitched from time to time. He ended up being like this for a day, then he passed away. He was six years old though.

A couple years before that one of my other guinea pigs kept falling over, and was a bit paralysed, so we took him to the vet, and they gave him an injection. He suddenly got better straight away, it was so weird. He was great ever since.

Sick Guinea Pig who won't eat or drink!?

I unfortunately lots a couple of guinea pigs a year or so ago with a bacterial infection that presented similarly to this. They got sort of wobbly and drowsy, and just really weren't acting like themselves. The vet said there was nothing I could do, but I did a bit of research, and managed to fix another 2 that had fallen ill. It was contagious, so the first step is to remove your guinea pig away from any other animals, just in case it is something that can be passed on. Keep feeding water from a dropper but avoid the mushed up pellets, and try to use fresh vitamin rich vegetables made into a paste, if possible add an electrolyte solution designed for small animals to make sure you keep him hydrated. Keep him in a room that is not too hot or too cold, but is a comfortable temperature. To help mine recover I kept them in a dark place, where they could rest without being disturbed. To fix the bacteria in their stomachs I decided to try a lactose free pro-biotic, the only one I could find in my area was a unsweetened, unflavoured soy yogurt, I dropper fed this to one, and had to VERY CAREFULLY syringe feed the other, they only need around 5mL of this, and probably twice a day. I can't guarantee this will work, but it helped the healing of my guinea pigs a lot. I now feed a pro-biotic once a week to help ensure health for all my guinea pigs, and I have increased there vitamin C intake, in fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as in a supplement form in 1 dish of water in their cage (whilst they have plain water in another). Trying all or some of these tips might help your guinea pigs health. I hope he gets better. Good Luck!

My 6 week old guinea pig won't eat or drink?

We just got her yesterday and she's a sweet little guinea pig. When i put her in the cage, she went right into the little igloo we have for her. The cage has alfalfa pellets and a water bottle. Last night, we put her in and she gets scared really easily and she just started running around. However, this morning, we looked in the bowl and bottle and all the food and water was still there..

My previous guinea pig passed away because he hadn't eaten or dranken anything for two days. When we took him to the vet, it was too late. The vet said that if a guinea pig doesn't eat for as long as half a day, then that's usually a problem.. Now, im extra cautious and want to make it right this time.

Can you give me some advice as to how it may be able to eat or what the habits of a 6 week guinea pig are?
Thanks

(oh yeah, and if you could tell me how to sex them...because i was told it was a girl by one and a male by another...so....yea...i thought it would be easy, but i guess not(: )

Thanks again!

Why won't my guinea pig eat hay?

Eating hay is really important for good health in guinea pigs (as well as horses and rabbits) so try your best to figure out why your guinea pig isn’t eating hay!The hay may not be very good. Make sure it’s good quality hay, and that there’ s nothing wrong with it—no mold, etc. Guinea pigs like most types of hay, but timothy or orchard grass hay is generally the best. I offer other types of hay like meadow grass hay, oat hay, or botanical hay as a special treat (my piggies are rather spoiled). My experience with alfalfa hay is that rabbits at least love it, but it’s pretty bad for them—it’s too high in calcium and protein for regular consumption.There may be something wrong with your guinea pig’s teeth or something hurting in their mouth. If they eat other food with no problem, then this isn’t likely to be the problem.It gets too much other tastier food—pellets, greens, too many treats. People often think animals will naturally eat what’s good for them, but like people, if given junk food, animals will prefer to eat the junk food! If you feed unlimited pellets, try cutting back and not giving as much greens/treats and see if your guinea pig tries the hay.As Whistling’ Wheekers suggests, being with another guinea pig eating hay will help your guinea pig learn to eat hay. Plus, two guinea pigs are just a lot more fun than one!

My guinea pig won't walk properly!!!?

My sister's guinea pig is a somewhat old male named Brownie.
Today, when I got home, I found that he wasn't walking or moving properly.
For a while he has had impaction. Upon knowing this, (and my dad thinking it was constipation) him and my sister decided to remove the poop somewhat forcibaly. This angered me that I had specifically told my sister not to do this but apparently she did it anyway.
Now, my guinea pig won't walk.
He makes squealing noises whenever I touch him.
He is a little overwieght.
It's Friday night so the vet is closed and probably won't be open this weekend.
If anybody knows what the problem is, please tell me.

My gf's guinea pig won't eat or drink, also has gunk in the eyes.?

Pine bedding contributes to upper respiratory infection, which is what your piggie has. URI cannot be treated with over the counter antibiotics as another post suggests. It will not go away on its own and will turn into pneumonia (if it hasn't already) if left untreated. The outcome is fatal.

Take your piggie to a qualified exotics vet right away. Piggies go downhill very quickly once sick, so time is of the essence if you want to save him.

You will also need to begin handfeeding him aggressively to prevent his gut from going into stasis. You can crush up his pellets and add a bit of water to make a mush. Feed this to him with a syringe or child's medicine dropper. Alternate the mush with sips of water.

Why wont my Guinea Pig eat an orange?

I wouldn't be worried. Sometimes their tastes can change. There are other foods high in vitamin c that you can give him. Here is a list:
* Sweet red bell peppers
* Parsley
* Broccoli
* Cauliflower
* Strawberries
* Mustard greens
* Papaya
* Grapefruit
* Kiwi
* Oranges
* Cantaloupe
* Cabbage
* Tomatoes
* Raspberries
* Celery
* Spinach
* Pineapple
* Watermelon
* Tangerines
* Limes
* Cranberries
* Guava
You can try any of those. Also there are liquid vitamin c drops you can put in his water and vitamin c pills that you can give him. They're made by the oxbow hay company. If you feel it's because he misses the other pig (both males so they're probably always going to fight) try getting a larger cage or hutch. This may help any territorial issues.
