My English Teacher Told Me To Show And Not Tell Well Writing A Response To Literature Essay .

How should we write ISC English literature answers?

As I completed my schooling from ISC board and scored pretty decent marks in English, I think I would be able to help you with this.First of all, if you were in icse in grade 10 then you must be already having a little command over the subject. But I really did find a lot of difference in the nature of chapters provided in both the grades. Syllabus of tenth standard is lenghty yet intriguing whereas syllabus of grade 12 is dull comparatively. To score good in English, its really important to love the language and not mug up like other subjects. I used to prepare a separate copy where I used to write character sketch of every protagonist, key adjectives/quotes used in specific chapters and synonyms of words which are used frequently while writing. My Teacher told us not to use because and then much. For this I would advise you to analyse your writing style and mark the words which you use too much in your answers. Check out thesaurus and make a list of their synonyms.I often felt that while answering essay type questions in exams, we start with a bang but while writing the whole summary we loose the essence of the question asked. I know length matters but prioritize quality over quantity. The most common or say careless mistake where I used to loose marks was leaving words incomplete. I remember writing becaus instead of because in my terminal exams. My teacher made a circle on the word and deducted five marks for this saying you have done spelling mistakes here and there. For poetry instead of focusing on understanding the meaning of each and every line, go for reading summaries. It will save your time in exams.I hope this helps and feel free to ask anymore questions.

What's the point of literature analysis?

There is a fascinating look at this question at: http://www.paulgraham.com/essay.html

Essentially, the author is suggesting that our current literary analysis is a mistake. What was once necessary, i.e. a translation and analysis of Greek works that were unearthed, evolved by chance into our modern essay on literature.

An excerpt: "The most obvious difference between real essays and the things one has to write in school is that real essays are not exclusively about English literature. Certainly schools should teach students how to write. But due to a series of historical accidents the teaching of writing has gotten mixed together with the study of literature. And so all over the country students are writing not about how a baseball team with a small budget might compete with the Yankees, or the role of color in fashion, or what constitutes a good dessert, but about symbolism in Dickens."

How Can I Improve My Essay Writing Skills?

I am currently a Sophomore in High School and I want to change around this semester by trying my hardest. Problem is, I guess its not good enough.....

My essay writing skills are horrible, when I write an essay and just put a major amount of effort into it, trying to make it as good as possible, I'm lucky to get a 75% =(

I was wondering if there was anyone in my situation and what helped them start writing A+ essays or B+ essays or just tips or book suggestions that anyone could recommend since I am in desperate need of better essay writing skills....

Thank You for any help, all answers are appreciated.

What are some non-cliche ways of saying something will "slip through your hands like sand"?

Well, as clichés go, it's not bad. Generally, the expression is that something "will slip through your hands" or "...will slip through your fingers." Your addition of "like sand" makes your sentence a rather nice simile.

But your teacher would like to have you explore some other phrasings, so here are a few:

1. "If you don't cherish your relationships they can become mundane, and then eventually they will crumble.

2. "When we don't cherish our relationships we run the risk of losing them."

3. "In order for a relationship to endure, it must be handled with care--kept fresh and new."

How are those for a start?
