What would cause continuous ear infections in an adult?

I was looking up some info on Chronic Ear Infections for you and ran across these sites on Chronic Otitis Media - causes and cures that I thought you might like to look at. There is too much information to post here or else I would - its hard to condense it into something that would be really useful for you.

How can you tell if your child has an ear infection by looking in her ears?

I am fully aware of the consequences of an untreated ear infection. Although I have never had an ear infection myself, all of my daughter's cousins on her father's side of the family have had frequent ear infections and now have tubes in their ears. In the past I took her to the doctor frequently, every time I suspected her ears hurt. And of all those times she had one infection - they THINK.

My daughter still sees a doctor on a regular basis. I'm just trying to avoid an unnecessary visit where should pick up something more serious from the other sick kids. I think that people who go to the doctor for every little thing do as much harm to themselves as those who never go. And taking antibiotics all the time is not a good thing.

Gypsy, you are making unfounded assumptions about me and how I care for my child. It's kind of offensive, next time please think before you speak.

Chiropractic for ear infections in toddlers?

Chiropractors work on your bones and joints, so any treatment by one will have no effect on an ear infection. Go to the ENT and listen to what is said and advised. I was skeptical myself, but my son has done very well with his tubes. He got an ear infection every other month from birth until two. That's when he had the tubes put in and hasn't had any problems since. Since ear infections are usually caused by fluid build up behind the eardrum, the child is unable to hear normally, which lasts as long as 30 days after the infection clears up. That can seriously harm your child's speaking ability. Getting the tubes and draining that fluid works wonders.

I can't get ear drops to go down for my ear infection?!?

Three things:

1) It probably seems like all the liquid's coming back out because your ear canal isn't absorbant; all you're trying to do is coat the ear canal/drum with the liquid. Even one drop of the ear drop fluid is way more than it takes to do that, and so it's inevitable thank you'll get some return when you tip your head back up. I'd be concerned if you didn't; it'd mean that you were pouring fluid straight into your brain!

2) That being said, it can sometimes be difficult to get the drops right down there. I had a vicious ear infection last year (you have my sympathies, I had no idea something that sounded so common could be so excruciatingly painful), and my doctor recommended that i push cotton wool, the loose kind rather than a cotton bud, down into my ear canal and then soak it with the ear drops. You'll end up using much more of the drops, but it'll ensure that the cotton wool soaked with the ear drops is in contact with the infected part of the ear. I think some kinds of ear drops even come with cotton wool for this purpose.

3) The best way to open up your ear canal isn't to pull down on your earlobe, it's to reach over the top of your head with the arm on the opposite side of your infected ear and pull up on the top of your ear. It's how you're meant to insert ear plugs. I work in the mining industry and have to wear these things all the time. Trust me, it's far easier to open up your ear canal this way.

Good luck. Ear infections suck.

Why do my earlobes close up after a few days without earrings even though I've had them pierced for about 15 years?

I actually have this problem as well, although my ears have only been pierced for four years. The problem is that your piercings are being chronically irritated. Ear piercings that have healed normally won’t close up so easily. There could be many reasons behind why your ears didn’t heal properly. You may have a metal allergy that is constantly irritating your ears, or it may just be the type of earring, or how you change your earrings. Even sleeping on your side can irritate them. You have a few options. One is to buy earrings that are completely nickel free. Even most gold and silver earrings will contain some nickel. If you’re really worried about it you could try surgical-grade stainless steel/titanium, or 14–16 karat gold. Costume/cheap earrings are the absolute worst idea, so don’t wear them! The next option is to let your piercings close up completely, then get new piercings with safe metal, and leave them it for at least 6 weeks without changing them. If you disturb them, you’ll probably end up with the same problem as before. The last option is what I’ve been doing; just toughing it out. I keep round backed studs in everyday, cleaning occasionally, in addition to when I change my earrings. I never leave my earrings out for more than a day. I did once, and my hole partially closed up. Ouch.

High pitch ringing in my ears since 5 years old?

When i was 5 years old i suddenly out of no ware has a very sudden and loud high pich ringing sound in my ears. i have suffered with it every day since it has never stopped. i am now 24 years old. the ringing is constant however i also get attacks of a sudden loss in hearing in one ear. (left or right) in which this ringing suddenly gets 5 times louder in one ear. it last for about 10 seconds and returns to normal. i am just curious because i was reading online about this. and so far i have not seen one case ware a person has had this constantly for years and years like me. the ringing never stops ever. started at age five. hasn't stopped since. my curiosity is aroused because after researching this. My case suddenly seems rare. even though i have this constant high pitch almost unbarable ringing in my ears i still have excellent hearing. i can hear conversations through walls 2 rooms away. and i can pick off sounds very well. i build engines for a living. and i can use my hearing to identify every tink or rattle in the engine down to the very bolt. so my hearing is better than perfect. but this ringing mess is driving my crazy. another strange thing. is these sonic devices that they use on dogs to make them stop barking. that they claim humans cant hear. Well i can hear those things if its any ware in the same house as me. i get it with in 3 feet of me i think im going deaf from it. nobody around me seems to even hear it at all. i ask people don't you hear that good gosh how can you not hear that. and they just look at me like im crazy. the ringing also gets a lot worse if i am around anything that emits static electricity. like a tv screen or power lines. This is driving me crazy. it never stops for one. annoying isn't the word for it. and i seem to be able to hear things that only dogs are suppose to be able to hear. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY EARS? dose anybody have an explanation?

How long does it take for a perforated eardrum to heal and be able to hear properly in the case of a minor injury?

Healing times are similar for an ear drum as they are for any other soft tissue. Could be healed within a few weeks. But sometimes they never heal over completely. It depends how severe the perforation is and how much damage was done. Whether it heals over or not does not always determine how severe the associated loss will be, however. Some people naturally heal with thicker scar tissue, which may impede the movement of the eardrum somewhat. The only way to know for you specifically is to have had a test immediately preceding the perforation, and then another one shortly after the perf, and maybe even another one several weeks later once it has been able to heal.
