Check the lead you use to charge it. These often fail. Try one from a phone or other tablet.Check the charger itself. They often fail too. Try a charger from a different device or use a USB lead to charge from a computer.Try a power off reset. Hold the power button/slider for 20–30 seconds until the screen blanks (if it isn’t already blank). Release it. Then hold it for a few seconds until you see something on screen.Check the charging socket for damage. If it’s clogged with dirt - clean it out carefully with a needle. If it’s loose - you have a broken Kindle.(Very unlikely) The battery may have failed. Search online for how to buy a replacement and fix it. This might be the case if you have noticed it not holding a charge for very long and is more likely if it is a Kindle Fire model.

Why would my Kindle fire shut down while plugged in?

This sometimes happens if the power management IC is dysfunctional. You should probably contact Kindle tech support. If the chip is not properly doing the auto-switching, what happens is when it goes to move over the device doesn't have power for a gap of time during or after the switch, which means the electronics lose power and go "off".
