New dog ran away, what to do?
My family just got a dog for my sister from a friend for Christmas. We had her for a week, but we did put a collar on her. But no chip. I was left alone in the house today, and just let her out in the backyard to pee ( which is fenced off), let her inside the house and just when I opened the front door to go to work, she ran away. We live on an intersection on two busy streets, but she dodged the cars and went into the neighbors yard going another way. I tried my best to calm her before this happened (turning on the TV before I left and giving her a chew toy), for she does not like to be left alone in the house, and whines and somewhat barks when we leave her alone Anyways, she is gone and don't know what to do? My mom is going to try to find her, but I don't know how. Should I call the pound or animal shelter? I never had a dog b4 and only have a cat, and whenever she tries to escape out the door I pushed her away, but the dog is too large and agile to do that.

my dogs been missing since 9:30 pm and its now almost 3 am. we were at the park and he just ran off, i didn't have a leash on him because he always goes on walks alone since there is a park in front of our house. i didn't think he would run away and if anything he would run back inside. i still hear fireworks outside and i really want them to stop to see if he comes home. do you think he ran some were far or hes hiding close by? we drove around a bit and walked but we cant find him. am so sad what should i do. i cant even go to sleeping knowing that hes out alone and scared :(

That must have been very scary, I'm glad you managed to catch her though. Working on her recall will probably be a great idea. Start easy, and ALWAYS reward her for coming to you. Even if she ran away first, it's important that it is always a positive experience to come to you. Make it harder and harder at a speed she is comfortable with, and add distractions. You should also keep in mind that you shouldn't always put a leash on her or take her home/inside as soon as she comes to you, she'll pick up on that quickly (sounds like she already has) and start not wanting to come to you when you call. It can be a good idea to train this in a dog park, call her, reward her when she comes, and then immediately let her go back to playing or whatever she was doing. She'll learn that it's awesome to come to you, and that it doesn't necessarily mean that the fun is over.

Be honest with your child. Tell her the dogs got out of the yard and have run away, and you have not found them yet. Tell her that you hope they are found soon and you will keep looking. Then enlist her help in a nominal way with the search effort. Have her come with and help to hang some lost dog posters, let her help pick the photos to put on them, take her to the shelters to look for them, etc. Children aren't stupid- they know when they are being lied to and it's best to be honest with them. Then if they are found or you get a new dog, make sure the fence is secure and don't leave them outdoors unsupervised again.

What should I do if my kitten ran away?
It depends on how, when and where the kitten ran away. Assuming the kitten knows you and you haven’t abused it, it very well may come back to you. My (admittedly rather older) cat - 7 yrs old now- has run away twice while I was walking her because she got frightened by a dog. In the first incident, she got up in a tree and I had to get a ladder to get her down, in the second incident she ran under my deck to hide from the dog and later came out and waited at the back door until I came.In general it ‘s probably best NOT to run after a cat because they think you are a threat.

How long ago did you get the dog microchipped? There's lots of different companies out there now. My dog's from about five years ago is Avid, as are my ferrets. My new cat from a shelter is Home Again. You should have some sort of paperwork from whoever chipped the dog with the name of the chip AND the chip number.

IF he is able to come back, then he probably will. But don't count on it, someone could have taken him. You need to call the shelters and vets. Post some fliers in the local supermarkets and at major intersections. Take pictures of him to the vets in case someone brings in their "new" dog. Report him missing. Contact the local dog rescues, see if one of them pulled the dog from the pound and has him with their fosterers. Post him online. There are lots of places, including Craigslist, where you can list your lost dog for free. Is he microchipped? Huskies are infamous for running away and going a very long distance, so he ought to be. Contact the microchip company and report that he is missing so that if someone calls about his chip and tries to change it, the company can notify you. Use the Pets and Animals forum of Craigslist for a lot more advice. Tell them what city you are in (it's nationwide) and they'll help you track down some free local ads. Your newspaper(s), for example, usually run a four-day lost-pet ad for free in most cities.
