My HP Pavilion dv9205us Notebook PC won't start after system update.?

UGH!!!! Okay, this has happened to me once before and now it's happening again and I'm very frustrated. I have a HP Pavilion dv9205us Notebook PC. As usually, HP and/or Windows Vista has system updates and my computer restarts. Well, two nights ago, the computer gave me an automatic system update. Ever since then, when I go to turn on the computer it won't start... the lights flash and it makes noise like it's booting. But before the HP logo even hits the screen, the computer shuts down. And it does this over and over and over again. Occasionally after 50 times of doing this, it will start. Or I hold down the power button trick thingy and it will start.

Now, I'm assuming this is the notorious BIOS problem. I'm wondering if I should go wherever I need to go and download the previous version. Is that correct? Does anybody know of any other solution. The technical support online chat system on the HP site is mysteriously down right now, too. So I'm not getting any help from them.

Again, this happened to me before and I had to send my computer in for a whole new hard drive. That was a nightmare. And I found if this ever happened again, I was going to switch to a MAC. And you're talking to the most loyal Windows person, too!

PLEASE HELP!!

Bios says my cpu temperature is 88c, not OC'd?

The cooler is somehow not installed properly. I had the same problems with a Pentium 4 Prescott once. The cooler was all attached and stuff and I applied thermal compound and the temperatures were soaring to about 70-80 degrees.

You should defiantly fix the problem. The CPU has a Thermal junction temperature (tj max), for most Intel CPU's the temperature is around 66.7 - 74.1 degrees. It will depend on the model and usually around this temperature, the CPU may start to throttle down its speed in order to reduce heat.

This means less performance for what you paid for.

I shut down the PC and checked the cooler. Turns out one of those push pins bent and created some space between the motherboard and cooler mount and less contact with CPU.

Make sure the 4 push pins of the CPU cooler are pushed in all the way and make sure you applied enough thermal compound (e.g Arctic Silver).

Was the cooler the original Intel cooler that came with the packaging? There are 2 versions of the stock cooler, one with a copper base and the other just 100% aluminium. For the i5, you need the copper version.

Are you sure your case has enough ventilation? Check how your cables are arranged.

To do any kind of overclocking, the stock cooler is not enough. You need something beefier. A CoolerMaster Hyper212+ would be great and it's a great buy since it's very cheap.

EDIT - I just remembered that my friend recently built an i5 2500K based system. His CPU temperatures were quite high in BIOS, 50 - 60 degrees and he used the stock cooler as well. When we did a bit of research, we realized that the power saving functions aren't available in the BIOS and therefore the CPU runs at higher temperatures.

When the PC is in the OS, the OS can dynamically adjust the CPU voltage, frequency and therefore power and lowering heat when it is not doing much work.

You also may want to reflash the BIOS to see if you get any better results.

New computer; no beep on start up, monitor will not pick up a signal. Please help.?

I am running a custom computer that I built only 2 days ago. While playing a game the keyboard stopped working and I thought a good way to fix it is to restart the system. Upon the restart, there is no more beep sound and the monitor says, "No signal." I am completely stumped, I have no clue what could possibly be wrong with the computer. I have tried another monitor and it works just the same, no signal. I also turned the computer on and had the side open and every thing is going. I would very much appreciate any help I could receive. Thank you!

My external hard drive is not opening, but it is showing up in my computer. How can I open it?

well i know 2 methods:try this does it work as m quite sure that i might not need to tell the second solution cosidering normally this one always work: 1.go to command prompt2.Type the folowing:attrib drive_letter:*.* /d /s -h -r -s3.Replace the word ‘drive_letter’ with your drive. For Ex mine is G drive so it will have the command : attrib G:*.* /d /s -h -r -s4.Than you hard drive/pen drive will open and show a nameless folder. Open the nameless folder.5.You will see all files/folders originally in your hard drive/ pen drive inside that nameless folder.6.Please do reply to me if it work. Cuz second method works only if u tries this and your hard drive/ pen drive does not open still.

What is the meaning of a "no boot device available" message on a computer?

It usually means that your primary hard drive has had a hardware failure and needs to be replaced. When you turn on a computer, it searches one or more of its storage devices for the operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, et al.).  Usually, it checks the CD/DVD drive first to see if there is an install disk, then it checks the primary hard drive to see if the operating system is already installed.  If the computer cannot find a valid operating system to boot from on any of its devices, you get the "No boot device available" error.  If you are unfamiliar with this error message, you should take your computer to a well respected service center for assistance in replacing the hard drive and re-installing the operating system.  They can also attempt to get your personal data off of the existing hard drive.

Would installing an SSD into my computer make it faster?

If your bottleneck is storage access time, maybe. It depends a lot on your OS, RAM, and CPU, but if you have a reasonably fast CPU and 4GB of RAM for GNU/Linux or 8G for Windows, that's usually enough to consider getting an SSD. If you have less RAM than that I would upgrade the RAM first.

What happens if I turn off my computer during Windows updates?

It's very unpredictable as it depends on what part of the OS the update was working on when you turned the power off. It could render the system unbootable, get stuck in an infinite boot-reboot loop and whatnot. If you are reading this before shutting down your system then there is a neat trick that could solve your problem. Usually if the updater is trying to update USB or DVD drivers, it will be stopped by any device plugged into those ports. It usually stops at 92-99% if this happens. In that case simply remove all peripherals that are not necessary like USB mice, keyboards, pendrives etc and you will notice that the update proceeds in a few minutes. If you are here after the unfortunate incident then not to worry. As of now windows doesn't even know that something is wrong. It tries and tries really hard to find the correct files to boot up but they simply don't exist. So we need to make it realize something has gone wrong and display the recovery options.Boot windows normally and wait for it to get stuck. Then long press your power button to do a hard reset.Repeat this around three to four times and windows will now take you to the troubleshooting window!Select from the options to either refresh your windows, which will leave all personal data untouched, uninstall all non default apps and clear registry, or restore windows from a previous restore point. The latter is your best choice and usually before any major update, windows makes a system restore point. If not then it's your bad luck and the restore point may be well in the past. But it's nothing to fret over because all your personal files will still be there. It's just the windows settings and features that will be old.Good luck! It's windows… you’ll need it :p

Random fps drops, requires PC restart to temporarily fix?

I hate to say this, but after all you did there isn't much left. Something could be going bad in there.

My motherboard is getting really hot! (170F / 80C)?

Your answer may be as simple as get a good fan and install it, or a bad sensor, never seen a M/B temp jump without taking everything else with it - everything is hooked to it, had a temp problem with a asus M/B myself, my N/B was running at 50c+ stuck a 40mm fan on it cured the problem got it down to 25c, still when the system is eating a few thousand watts of power and the PSU is buzzing it gets hot even with several thousand CFM blowing through the case. I monitor my memory temps using a inexpensive thermo-meter with a lcd display, just glued the sensor to the base of one of the ram heat sinks found out my ram was getting hot I corrected it with 2 - 60mm fans no more crashing when the system is stressed, cheap fix 3 bucks at MPJA...

BTW the 64 bit W7 OS can use a lot more than 3 gigs of memory a lot more - got 8 gigs of ram on my old system will go with 32 gigs with my next build [use a lot of memory with what I do] folks using 32 bit O/S are stuck with the 3 gig limitation more or less - good luck..
