You have many answers already. I would only add that you can create the illusion of stereo with a couple of methods. Whether or not they would "degrade" the sound is debatable, but it is certainly doable. Putting the same mono signal through each stereo channel and EQing them differently is one way. Playing with phase relationships is another. (Waves has a great imaging plug-in for this in their Surround Bundle.) And others have already suggested adding reverbs and delays. As with anything in music and sound, the context means everything, so what works well on one sound may be terrible on another. You will have to experiment!
