My Skin Doctor Recently Suggested Me To Start Using Accutane/isotretinoin. I Want To Know If This

Will taking accutane (isotretinoin) ruin my ability to go into the marines after treatment?

It shouldn't harm your chances - and it might actually help the other recruits.

Case in point - I joined the Marines right out of high school (one of my friends that had graduated a year or so earlier had joined and was a recruiter). I went to Parris Island, and was handling it fairly well, except there was one kid with horrible acne - and he couldn't shave without damn near bleeding out.

Every time we got on line for inspection and they got to him, we were all doing push-ups.

About two weeks of that, and I finally stood up in the middle of them one day - the drill instructor nearly blew a vein in his forehead screaming at me to get back down and push. I looked him right in the eye and said 'no'.

He drug me into the senior drill instructors office and they proceeded to scream at me for a bit - and I told them that I was done. They screamed at me again about how I was going to be a loser, and never do anything with my life - I just shrugged and said 'whatever...'

This was after Desert Storm, but before the current Iraq/Afghanistan clusterf**k, so they threw me on a bus home. It was the best decision I ever made (and their threats of me being a failure actually encouraged me to prove them wrong by succeeding - repeatedly).

I've got a lot of respect for Marines, and anyone in uniform, but I knew full well before I went in that I did not obey authority (especially arbitrary authority), and couldn't stand being told what to do (especially when those things were pointless). I also knew that they were trying to train us to work together - which I'm also not too keen on.

In short - get rid of the acne (if you can).

I was on isotretinoin and was on it for 6 months. Do not give blood for 1 month. You have to see your dermatologist each month and cannot miss an appointment. You also have to do a medication knowledge quiz before you can pick up your next month's prescription. You should have 2 forms of birth control but don't let it scare you from being intimate because some doctors try to do that. You also have to give blood and urine samples to check for pregnancy and vitamin/vital levels because the medication is so harmful to a fetus and they take it seriously. They will start you on taking 1 pill a day and may suggest later taking 2 pills a day. I was able to take the 2 pills at the same time if needed. Its not a big deal if you forget meds on one day though. Sometimes I would take 2 and a few hours later take 1 if I missed a day and felt fine. It will flare up your acne at first but then get better. It will also chap your lips really bad but that's a common side effect. So far the treatment really helped. I was also on cephalexin, an antibiotic because of the flaring up of my acne. But probably during the 5th month, you'll be able to use oils on your face without breakouts. Don't use lotion. I have found that natural body oils work best for hydrating dry skin. Also you could use a charcoal soap or Shea Butter soap. Bar soap worked better than shower gel. I only used shower gel if I felt lazy but used a loofah. Be careful about using overly acidic face wash and don't wash your face every day. The medicine also helps get rid of dark spots but you can also buy ponds dark spot cream to boost the process. The oils I also liked using were Carols Daughter and later on a collagen oil. I tend to like to mix oils though so I ended up mixing the last 1/3 of the carols daughter with the collagen plus you can mix any oils with vegetables oils. Always use the oils immediately after a shower and only use lotion on your legs and feet for the time being. Medicated chapstick, the oil, or Vaseline works best for the chapped lips. There are also plenty of natural home remedies to be found online such as face masks, oil mixtures, foods, drinks, and therapeutic options. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. Drink water also for dry mouth. Don't drink as much soda or sugary drinks. A lot of protein also helped me. I did a lot of online research before finding every piece of information I needed. I hope I helped though! Best wishes!

I was in class 7, when I started having severe acne. And all that my parents (and other elders) said is that it will go away on it's own after sometime. It was something very trivial to them and they didn't bother much. However, it was difficult for me because teenage is always difficult, obviously.I took special care of my face. I used a separate washed towel for face, never popped a pimple/acne, tried all those herbs like neem, turmeric, etc. It was all in vain.It stayed for almost 7 years, when finally I decided to consult a dermatologist. The first question the doctor asked me was "why didn't you come earlier?". So, he gave me isotretinion/accutane (Sotret) along with some creams and facewashes. The first month was a little painful, because it didn't show much improvement, rather, I saw increase in my pimples. But, I learnt that that's how it works. It forces the hidden pimples/acne out and then works on the sebum glands. The second month was moderate. On the third month, 80% pimples faded away. The fourth month, I had the skin of a model/actress. Maybe I am exaggerating, but compared to the skin I had, it was a miracle. The fifth, sixth and seventh month were quite similar. And (touchwood), it's been 10 years now since I took sotret, till date I didn't have any severe acne problem. Though, pimples may come and go due to stress, pollution, stomach disorders, etc. Now, the very important part of isotretinion is that "if you have other ways to cure your acne, do it, instead of isotretinion. This should be your LAST OPTION." Why? Because, prolonged use or improper use of Isotretinion can lead to many issues inside your body, like hormonal imbalance, fibroids/cysts, stress, cognitive problems, etc. Isotretinion stays in your blood for a long time, even after you stop taking the pills. It's dosage must be consulted by a good dermatologist and hence improvised by the doctor only. Most of the time, Acne/pimples are symptoms, which tell you there is something wrong inside your body. In most cases, it's either due to lack of hygiene or hormonal imbalance. Try to check on those first, if not, go for isotretinion under doctor's supervision. Also, there's a lotion/gel called clindamycin (I prefer Alkem's clindac A solution), it helps to dry/reduce pimples visibly.Isotretinion won't work on scars, for that you have to use scar fading gels/creams like mederma, or whatever is prescribed by the dermatologist. I hope this helps. All the best.

Dry nose from Isotretinoin.?

Nasal Dryness:Patients may have a dry nose or nose bleeds due to dryness and subsequent cracking of the inner lining of their nose, frequent use of lubricants is recommended.

Dryness of the inner linings of the nose can be caused by a variety of factors. Allergic conditions, viral infections, chronic irritation, sinus inflammation, dry climates and postnasal discharge as well as oxygen therapy, can change the moisture content of the nasal lining. Accutane® (Isotretinoin) will often cause dry nose, which may in turn produce cracking and consequent nosebleeds. Lubricating their nose can minimize or prevent this side effect.

Nose lubricants that are most often used are in the form of a gel. These will often contain polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol.

Examples:

Rhinaris Lubricating Nasal Gel® (Pharmascience)
Secaris® (Pharmascience)

If your not sexually active on accutane do you still have too go for a blood test?

Yes, you still have to get monthly blood tests and use 2 forms of birth control whether or not you are sexually active.the reason for this is that some of the side effects include liver damage and the only way to test for this is to monitor your cholesterol and triglyceride levels with blood testing and with the birth control, if you get pregnant while on accutane, you have to get an abortion due to the severe birth defects that can result, and you have to sign a paper agreeing to this before starting. When using accutane you have to be enrolled in a program called iPLEDGE, if you look this up, it will outline all of the requirements for using accutane. Also, you have to have tried and failed numerous topicals and antibiotics before you would even be considered for accutane and at 14 years old, it's unlikely that you have. Go to a dermatologist and try using something else first. Accutane can be a miracle drug for some people but if there's something else you can use, I would highly recommend it. Accutane is more as a last resort.

Just be warned that this Accutane can dry out your skin, so be prepared to moisturize heavily with a noncomedogenic lotion. f your acne is dry and flaky, try using gentle skin care products. Irritating ingredients in many cleansers like sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens and fragrances can make your skin inflamed and make your dry acne worse. Use a creamy acne cleanser formulated for sensitive skin and avoid benzoyl peroxide, if you can help it, since it dries out your skin. If following your cleanser with a toner, look for one that's water-based to avoid the further dryness and flaking that an alcohol-based toner could cause.Changing how you function in day-to-day life can help ease your dry and flaky acne as well. For instance, wash your skin with warm water, not hot. This will prevent the tightness and itching that can arise from washing with hot water. Likewise, wear an oil-free sunscreen whenever you go outside. Sun damage can dry out your skin further and even worsen your acne. When your skin and acne is dry and flaky, all of that peeling skin can clog your pores and cause new blemishes to form. To combat this, use a mild exfoliant at least every other day to remove dead skin cells and to unclog your pores. A citrus or water-based toner will work as will the occasional at-home glycolic-acid chemical peel. Whatever you do, don't scrub your skin or your dry and flaky acne. Doing this will drive bacteria further into your pores and prolong the healing process. If things still remain as bad, check with your dermatologist.
