How to teach English to my wife?
I think the best way to help your wife is to get her to enroll at a local language school. Of course, you'll have to do your own research to make sure that it's a good school since a bad experience would hinder her learning process. Once she's taking formal lessons, you'll be able to help her speed up her learning process by providing meaningful real situations where she can practice. You can: - Role play Examples You pretend you are a sales person at a store and your wife is the customer. You need directions to get to the library and your wife provides the information. - Listening comprehension She can start by watching cartoons for small children. You can tape them and watch them first, and then give her a couple of general questions so that she tries to get the gist of it. After that, you can ask her questions based on more detailed information. After cartoons, I suggest you move on to watch the news. I suggest the BBC news as the newsreaders have been trained to speak clearly and what is even better, what she hears will be reinforced by the images shown. I suggest she then starts watching sitcoms. I'd postpone watching them for this later stage since most of the time one character speaks at the same time as another or uses idiomatic expressions so that sometimes it can be quite hard to understand them. There are many more things you can do to help her, but I think you'll have enough with this for now. But I'll have to insist on the fact that attending classes will give her regular exposure to the language in a graded and controlled environment which will not only give her the basics, but also will help her build up her confidence in the language.

Enroll her in an ESL class, and go with her for the first few classes. Get her some CDs or books on learning English. Hold up objects, give her the English name of them and ask for the Chinese name (it's a beautiful language, wish I had the patience to learn it myself). Can you find anybody in your town that may be a better translator for the two of you, even once in a while? And to ThePatriot, what the bloody he** does your answer have to do with anything this poor guy has asked? It's all a bunch of unrelated divorce stats that he doesn't need at this stage. LOL

I would like to say that English language has insufficiency for words in terms of calling the name of relations between husband and wife's brother and Sisters like brother’s wife is called Sister in law but in India she is Called BHABHI if she is Younger then Chhoti Bhabhi and if she is Elder then call her Badi Bhabhi but in English the specific relation is not cleared who's who.Brother in Law: Same word for husband and Wife's Brother in English but in India if someone is brother of wife he is called SAALA and if he is bro of husband then he will be called by wife DEVER.Just see the names of husband's all relatives for his wife….Younger Brother : DeverElder Brother: Jeth (if the brother are more than one same will be called Younger or elder)Sister : NanadMother: SAAS or Sassu MaaFather: SASURMother’s Brother is called MAMA both for husband and Wife…Father's Brother is Called Chacha if he younger, if elder then he is Taaya both for..But in English it's all Purpose word is Uncle for both Husband and wife’s elder Persons. Being strictly conventially accurate only your wifes siblings can be brother/sister-in-law. The spouses should be either ‘wifes brothers/sisters wife/husband’ or ‘B-in-Law/S-in-Laws wife /husband’. However convention has mainly gone out of the window nowadays and they are generally all called B-in-Law or S-in-Law whether are blood relations or just spouses. Just another example of now standards in both written and spoken English has deteriorated in modern times, some examples of which I find really annoying. My wife and my step son wont speak english when im around even though they are bilingual.When they are alone they just speak spanish.When im with my wife she speaks english when im with my step son he speaks english.When they talk to each other they speak spanish even though im there.Am i wrong to say something? I feel so unimportant and I never know whats being said or whats going on Im always the last one to find out.Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,Thanks for A2A.Here is my answer:I think having no prior education in any language will work to her advantage, as she will not be comparing the English with any other language.Start off with teaching her alphabets.Then move to small spellings.She should know the English names of all vegetable, animals, days and all items she uses daily.Introduce her to grammar. Teach basic grammar, ie noun, verb, adjective etc. Don’t go to advanced grammar. Let her first learn and understand day-to-day English.Once this part is set, introduce her to tenses (Past, Present & future tense).She will learn quickly if you ask her to first form a sentence in her native language and then in English.Ask her to read the newspaper aloud. She must at least practice speaking or reading for an hour, per day.Ask her to form small sentences like: May I come in? Please bring me water? etc.While explaining her, explain it in your native language. But ask her to respond in only English.Make her watch cartoons.I think this will be enough for her, I am sure with above she will be able to speak good English.This is all I can think of, do let me know if you face any difficulties.
