Name Aleksei And Spellings

What do you think of the name Aleksi for a boy?

I like it. I prefer Alexei (as in Alexei Yagudin - World Champion figure skating power-house). It's not my favourite and I probably wouldn't use it. But I think it's a good, solid, masculine name.

What I'd pair it with depends, really. I might pair it with Joseph, my father's middle name. I feel like sometimes uncommon and exotic first names need a more common and classic middle name to round it out. I also like family names. On the other hand, if I was going for the full-on Russian effect maybe Aleksi Petrov.

I like Nikolai for a brother. Yeah, the both have the 'i' ending, but name enders don't bother me as much as first letters. And the two 'i's have different sounds anyway. For a sister, maybe Yelena or Yulia? Natalia?

Bro only: Aleksi and Nikolai
Sis only: Aleksi and Natalia
Both: Aleksi, Nikolai and Yelena

Possible Aleksander nickname?

I am sorry but Alesko is not a very good nickname at all.

I agree with all the people before that Sasha is a very good nickname and that would be my first choice... but here comes in a little problem -the guy is only half-Russian.

I moved to the US when I was 11, which is pretty late, and therefore I did not attempt in any way to "americanize" my name. I am still called Slava and even though this seems easy, people mispronounce my name. But I also met many people of Russian heritage, who were either born here, or moved here at a very early age. And most very much americanized their names: of all my friends Alisa became Alice, Valya became Val, Misha became Mike, Masha became Maria and so on and so forth...
If that boy, being half-Russian, wants his name to sound American, Sasha may not be such a great choice, because it may sound too Russian or... girly.
Yes, some people believe Sasha to be a girl's name (links to the Obamas: Sasha and Malia lol)

Therefore the next best choice would be Alex. One of my friends' is named Aleksander and everyone calls him Alex.

So here is food for thought:
If the guy cares a lot about his heritage, is pro-Russian and was raised as a Russian-American kid then 'Alex' may seem offensive and/or weird to him.
On the other hand, if he was raised as an American-Russian child, considers himself an American and just wants to fit in, 'Sasha' may sound irritating and/or weird also to him.

What I would do in your situation is: ask him what he would rather be called; ask someone who might know; when he arrives (if there are any other people who know him around you) wait for them to call him something first; somehow find out if he loves his heritage or considers himself a true American; or just take a guess in hopes of luck.

Wish you luck! :D

Please choose from these "Russlish" names (names that work in both Russian and English)

My husband and I are looking for names that work well in both Russian and English (or at least have a reasonable Russian nickname that his side of the family can use).
If it's a boy, middle name will be Aleksey/Aleksei (after my husband's brother).
If it is a girl, middle name will be either Alexis or Kathrine (this spelling, after my mother).
My other children are Anastasia (Stacey/Stasya) and Maria Veronica.

Please comment, and choose your favourites.

BOYS:
Nikolai (Russian nn Kolya, English nn Cole?)
Eduard (Russian nn Edik)

Roman
Leo (Lev in Russian)
Alexander (nn Sasha)
Ruslan (pronounced "roos-LAHN")

What is a female version of the Russian name Alexei? (For a book character)

What is a female version of the Russian name Alexei? There is none. Whatever you can come up with will sound more absurd than the name of the Russian submarine commander in The Hunt for Red October, Kaganovich. There was a Canadian movie with a very bad Russian character. In one scene he introduces himself to the main character: “My name is Sergey Sergeyevich, but my friends call me Ilyusha.” That was exactly as absurd as it would be to say, “My name is John Fitzgerald, but my friends call me Billy.”Don’t be like that.
