Sand is preferred by both cory catfish and elephant nose fish, so there's no problem there.

Would Hydrogen Peroxide and salt work to clean a glass pipe?
In my experience hydrogen peroxide is about as good as water at cleaning glass pipes. The residue that is causing you the most difficulty is organic and requires a good organic solvent. My personal favorite is isopropyl alcohol because it is relatively cheap at high concentrations, so you can do your own dilutions for specific needs (I suggest getting the 92% if you can find it and dilute to 1:1 water and isopropyl). Most alcohol will work past 60 proof (though that is a high price for solvent) and I've even known someone to use naptha (paint thinner) to clean glass pipes. The salt is useful in that it scrapes the organic material off the glass, but will require a good solvent to be truely effective.Summary of my methodPut pipe in plastic bag (for larger pieces I suggest wrapping plastic bags over all outlets)Pour as much salt as possible into the pipe, bag is there for catching the excessFill the bag above the pipe with about 40% isopropyl alcoholShake the bag until the solvent has moved through most of the saltLet the pipe sit for a half hour and shake againRepeat until you can start to see the organic material coming off the glassNow you can either let the pipe sit overnight or get to workUse qtips and water to start flushing and scraping any material leftIn due time you should have a clean new pipe*remember to throughly wash and dry the pipe of any excess alcohol, unless you want a burst of fire when you go to smoke it
