I can't tell my gerbils apart, help?

Okay, so last August I got 3 little girl gerbils as a birthday present. I love them to death! Well, the problem I had with them, was one is Agouti color (brown) and the other two are identicle, with a greyish lilac color and red eyes. I used to be able to tell them apart by the VERY tip of their tails, one had a white tipped tail while the other had a yellowish tail. Well, I just noticed that recently Dreamy's (white-tipped tail gerbil) tail is now yellowish, just like her twin! I can't tell them apart now! Unless I take both into the bathroom, turn on all the lights, and look super super close, I can kind of tell which tail is lighter, but I don't want to always have to do that when handling them and stuff.

How can I tell them apart? I've heard of someone dipping the tips of their tails into food dye, then drying with a paper towel. Is that even safe? What about putting a dot of non-toxic marker on the top of their head? I need to know the safest method of telling them apart.

Thanks to all who answer!

Did anyone ever do cruel or unusual experiments with animals as a child?

Who is not fascinated about butterflies? While most of us are, I was a step ahead of mere fascination.I was around seven back then. My dad loved gardening and we had this big garden in our house with roses, marigolds and other flowering plants. In winter, the garden attracted many colorful, beautiful, fluttering butterflies. Our garden was also a mating ground for these butterflies. Dad showed me the beauty of nature in our garden, from him I learnt about butterfly and the beautiful process of metamorphosis.I witnessed the entire life cycle of a butterfly. Saw them growing and turning into a beautiful creature. Wonderful it was.I saw their tiny eggs. The hogging larva, to a mysterious pupa. I witnessed them hour by hour transforming into an adult beautiful butterfly. And I also saw many of them aging and dying, loosing their antennae and fore-wing. It was saddening.Image source: Kids butterfly dot orgThe Experiment:My fascination to see them fluttering and flying led to this experiment. I started collecting dead butterflies, i started to preserve them in between the pages of my book, then whenever I saw any old injured, broken-wing butterfly inside the house, I chased it and tried to stick the wing of my preserved butterfly, after their operation I use to leave them on plant leaf, I never saw them flying, because I guess they never did or may be they did, but I never found them back at the same place.Later I was punished in a family gathering for catching hold of insects and butterflies and doing such experiments on them. I was asked ”how would I feel If I am mistreated like this” these insects don't like what you do to them, parents told me, I shuddered. I was extremely sad and guilty, I never did it again. My siblings and cousins always bullied me calling me cruel. Oh, no, I am not, I just wanted to help…Butterflies still fascinate me, below is an image from my recent captureit: The Plain Tiger Butterfly (Danaus chrysippus) No teeth, no claws, but very much a Tiger!
