Need Help With Ping Spiking

Why am i having random ping spikes?

Could be your internet provider. Sometimes traffic gets heavy on their servers and you will get lagspikes. You should contact your provider about it. Tell them specifically what times the ping goes bad and that you have all your programs closed.

Why is my ping so high/spiking all of a sudden?

Newer routers have expanded 'buffer' sizes, which actually works against the TCP protocol.
Because they hold many more packets, and don't 'tell' the ISP servers to slow down the feed of packets until they get full, it just creates more problems in terms of latency...despite having large sizes of feeds (Mbps) to and from the ISP.
Test all your relevant network stats, but pay particular attention to "network buffer measurements" to see what it is:
ICSI Netalyzr: http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/
Requires Java, NoScript users can 'temporarily allow berkley...'

The results will give the entire Network, which includes your ISP, so although your router may be just fine, it could be the ISP config's that are mis-adjusted or could be tweaked. Many's the time a person complains to the ISP, and they flatly deny any responsibility, without actually examining their configs.

Portions of this podcast explain 'buffer bloat' and it sounds a bit like what you have.
Using the "Find" function (ctrl + F) with this phrase "the effect of the buffer bloat" will take you to the question/answer containing the explanation.

There's a couple of methods suggested to alleviate it, but I've not tried them.

ADDED: Funky-azz DNS requests could be the result of the hostfile being corrupted, or perhaps the compromised DNS servers as outlined in this article: http://dcwg.org/cleanup.html

If the Check-Up Site indicates that you are affected then either follow the instructions on that site or run one of their free tools listed to remove DNSChanger and related threats.

Another DNS testing utility is here: https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm
Gives alternate DNS's specific to you, and tells how to set them up. Pretty straight forward.

Why am I getting ping spikes from my laptop to my router?

Try to change relative position of route/access point and pc. Try to disconnect internet line. It can be depending from some reverse address resolution being triedTry to use arping instead of pingTraceroute to google.com and try to ping next hop device; check if you have similar issuesTry to lower wifi negotiating speed, either from your pc or access pointTry to repeat test opening many concurrent windows with many pings and check if it gets betterWindows is notorious for having inadequate timing capacities when measuring short time intervals. Ping reports something like <10ms when unable to get better measures. It can be dependant from a specific feature called interrupt aggregation being active in the network interface properties.

Why does my ping spike up during League of Legends when no one else is using the internet except for me?

Possible reasons this happens to me:Some windows service decided it’s s good time to start downloading an update without telling meThe same but some third party program instead of windowsPhone decides it’s a good time to put 100 photos into iCloudConnection has packet loss due to some problem in the ISPThe first 2 you can find out by using something like netbalancer to see and limit traffic by process ( haven’t found any good free alternatives, i might have to make one myself)For good measure turn off wifi on the phone while playing. Settings have been unreliable so far.Packet loss you can find out about doing “ping yourfavouritedomain.com -t” and seeing if any packets don’t get a response. Usually you cannot do much about it, unless you have 2 dofferent internet connections, like myself.

Ping to router spikes with Comcast DPC3939?

So recently, my family decided to "upgrade" to the DPC3939 router from Comcast. I ve been having issues with ping after we got it. Specifically when connected to multiple things (Skype, Steam, League of Legends, CS:GO, Chrome, etc). When doing so, I receive common lag spikes. My ping is normally around 10 to the router and around 30 to Google. But for reasons unknown to me, I get random spikes as shown in the picture below. The ping to router is on the left. The ping to Google is on the right. I am using a Realtek RTL8723AE wireless card in my laptop. I am also one room away from the router (on floor above, but moving rooms doesn t change the spikes). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Why would my router ping spike from 2ms to 3400, 1700, down to 700, then back to 2ms?

If you are pinging outside of the network that could be due to the fact that ISPs quite commonly limit ping responses. While ping is useful for testing connectivity it puts a stress on devices that don’t add to quality of communication. If the ping varies while you are pinging your own router at home. That can be a million things including a flaw in design.

Starting today my Rainbow 6 Siege has been having ping spikes and I'm getting disconnected from games. Discord is also having ping spikes. As far as I know nothing has changed to cause this, so why is it happening? Thanks in advance

You should go to this website Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed TestThis will tell you what your current download speed, latency, and upload speeds are. Most likely is an issue with your internet connection. If everything seems fine on the test results, i would suggest that if you aren’t already, make sure your PC is hooked up via Ethernet, and not through WiFi. You should also try restarting your router every couple days, to keep it running smooth. Another thing i have done in the past, is turn off automatic updates for the steam games i do not play very often, downloads in the background can cause plenty of lag if your internet is subpar. Double check your taskbar and make sure nothing is updating or being downloaded. Hope this helps, happy gaming!

How do I reduce my ping for CS: GO?

To reduce Ur ping check all your connections like if u are connected to mobile data check no app is running in your mobile and in your PC and then check where your mobile connects well with the nearest tower in the house if broadband is there check your router firmware is upto date and play preferably with lan cable. Now in your windows 10 turn off auto update by tapping ctrl shift esc open task menu and go to services and there at the end scroll down and turn off auto update off then all the background not important apps and don't install third party antivirus cause it use your net and block communication too then you are probably good to go.Another thing you can do is by going to settings and there networks choose your network and what ever WiFi you are connected to just go to its properties and turn on metered connection this will help you in getting lower your variation in game and excessive usage of net by background app gets block right away .

Ventrio lag without ping spikes?

Vent Server? Yet you see the lights come on as though you were a client?
You have to be running 2 separate packages, the server and the client software (I assume)

So, I'm not sure what the problem is. If the server is running well for others (from the internet), then it is your client. If everyone else is getting the same problem, then it's a server software issue...

Finally, to run a Vent server, you need good upload speed. Most packages give good download speed, but limit upload speed. While a 8 slot Vent server won't hit any upload limits, there could be lag related to this. As well, if all of a sudden there is some virus or malware running on the same machine, it could be hogging all the bandwidth...

Maybe if you explain the configuration a bit better (server, client where?, who gets what problems, is the problem the same via local LAN IP and via the Internet (public IP)? Does the problem go away if you use another Vent server?

EDIT:
I read some of your details on other questions (same issue), so it seems only your client is having this issue. What happens when you run the "test" under setup. Does it lag badly there too? If so, then it has to be your network or client. If not, then the server you are connecting to may have issues - for whatever reason...
Check your output devices in your windows setup carefully - try an alternate if possible, there's usually 2 options - "default device" and actual "sound card". Check and uncheck "Use Direct Sound" and see if that helps too.
Finally, maybe contact the owner of the hosting company:

maybe he's aware of an issue with Windows 7 and Ventrilo - or contact Ventrilo.

And, 10 users - is this a commercial version or a "hacked" version of Vent server? The free version only has 8 slots. If he has a commercial version, he should be able to contact Ventrilo support to help you guys out...
