Need Music For Ice Skating

What is the most overdone ice skating music?

Easily: Malaguena
Close Second: Carmen

Some others:
The Feeling Begins
On the Waterfront
Swan Lake
Rachmaninov 2
Paint It Black
Moonlight Sonata
Zorba the Greek
Concerta for Coloratura

And of course, there are pieces of music which have been overused at one time but are no longer overused--or used at all. The bell suite and love theme from Ice Castles was disgustingly popular in 1979-80, but might be a nostalgia piece now. Similarly, Hooked on Classics I and II were insanely overused in 1981. Might be a toe-tapper today.

There is also the option to use a lesser used bit of the score, like Michelle Kwan did with Carmen. The Rondo from the Moonlight Sonata isn't overused. How many people would even recognize the second movement? Classical music fans, for sure, but skatefans? Probably not.

Look beyond the easily overused classics and the currently popular stuff. Rent some old movies from Netflix. Listen to the scores. You can still buy the sountracks. There's 50 years of rock and roll--a good solid bit of it was extended instrumental solos. Ask your parents. Or find out what the next great thing is from asking around for under-hyped music and bands. I once cut a program to an Astor Piazolla tango YEARS before they became popular and overused.

Choose something different.

Asian figure skating music?

I love Asian music and I think it's great to skate to.

For a traditional style, try skating to a Japanese Taiko Drum medley. These tend to be very upbeat songs with a set pattern, so they might be a little difficult to put a program to, but they make for a very interesting and unique performance!
For this genre, I would recommend:
~Anything from the group: Kodo
~Particularly the song: Irodori (from the same group)

For another traditional style, I would recommend the Japanese song, Sakura Sakura. It is a much more easygoing song than a Taiko drum, and therefore probably much easier to skate to.
~Try the version by Aiko Shimada and Elizabeth Falconer.
This song, however much it is interesting, is not very upbeat. Another downside to this song is that it has vocals which may not be allowed for some competitions.

For a Chinese and movie-soundtrack style, try Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon soundtrack. It has some nice Asian instruments combined with Yo-Yo Ma's cello playing.
~From this try the songs: Night Fight, To the South & Desert Cappriccio (though this last one does not have as happy sounding of a beat than the first two)

For a very different skate, try Cambodian music. This has a pretty upbeat style and is definitely different but still has an Asian flair.
~Try the group: Musicians of the National Dance Company of Cambodia

Good luck with your skate!!!

Tango music for figure skating?

Finally, I've narrowed down a selection of tango music to:
*El Tango de Roxanne
*'Angelica' from POTC4 soundtrack.
I want the music to really allow me to show 'emotion' in my skating, and to showcase my footwork sequence and my spiral sequence. Please tell me wether I should choose el tango or Angelica, and your reason behind the choice.
And please don't tell me that tangos are overused, that I should be more original etc etc.

Are there any restrictions on the music used for figure skating programs other than length?

There is a lot of freedom when it comes to music for figure skating programs. There are many different skaters whose diverse styles flourish in different kinds of musical settings. At increasing levels of skating, the length of a program increases as well. The longest program in length is the Senior men's free skate — 4 minutes and 30 seconds. When it comes to other restrictions, as far as I know, the music must be non-vocal. Recently, there has been a rule change that allows pre-"novice" level skaters to have vocals in their program music. Many skaters choose to skate to orchestral music, an elegant complement to an elegant sport. However, that doesn't exclude other genres. One of my favorite programs is Daisuke Takahashi's hiphop rendition of Swan Lake.

Music for figure skating competition?

Try to find music that is suitable with your program (upbeat or slow etc) and your skating style (powerful/technical or grace/elegant etc). Most importantly is that you need to be able to connect and "feel" the music/song/lyrics.

Most of the songs mentioned below have the instrumental version out there (if they are not already instrumental only).

If you like classical music, I think you can try to check out these music:
1. Nocturne No.2 OP.9-2 in E flat major (Chopin)
2. Conte Partiro (Andrea Bocelli)
3. Rhapsody in Blue (George Gershwin)
4. Fruhlingslied (Felix Mendelssohn)
5. Traumerei (Robert Schumann)
6. The Entertainer
7. Jeux interdits
8. Sonata in A major

if you want to try other music such as pop and jazz:
1. songs form Jazz Suite No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich (one of them is used for Eyes Wide Shut)
2. Fields of gold (Eva Cassidy)
3. Over the rainbow
4. Memories
5. Moon River
6. All the way (celine dion)
7. The look of love
8. What a wonderful world
9. The final countdown (more dramatic type)
10. You raise me up (Josh Groban)

If you want to try something more upbeat, try some samba/latin (that still has some jazz and classic feel and not too upbeat which usually not a good music for skating) such as Pink Martini's mucis: Lilly, Anna, Let's never stop falling in love (from Mr and Mrs Smith movie), Hang on Little tomato, Amando Mio, la soledad or Sympathique.

Hope you find your music and have fun with your program!

Am I unsophisticated if I don’t like the ice skaters music in the Olympics?

Not at all. Music is a very personal thing. My least favourite music that is popular with ice dancers is Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Every time somebody performs to it I want to hit the mute button. I imagine that skaters sometimes choose music that judges seem to like otherwise you risk getting down marked.
