New Job Frights Jittery Feeliings

How do I get over feeling scared while studying?

I have seen this dynamic many times and highly suspect you are suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It seems as if you are mostly struggling with a thought disturbance which doesn't have a ritualistic compulsive behavior component. It is very common for those struggling with some aspects of this condition to become so preoccupied with some type of feared outcome that they spend lots of time worrying over the seemingly potential risk. Here is a strategy on how to deal with this kind of anxious thinking. Whenever the thoughts begin to occur, remind yourself that this is an anxiety disorder and not a real legitimate concern. Immediately stop entertaining the thought. This is a very hard step to complete since most obsessions feels important and  frightening. These thoughts seem like an imperative. To combat this anxiety disorder, it is necessary for you to resist this by reminding yourself repeatedly that the fear is not real but rather a symptom of a mental disorder. Take 10 slow diaphragmatic breaths.  Here's a YouTube video demonstrating this type of breath work. Slowly inhale for 3 seconds and then exhale taking another 3 seconds. This type of breathing exercise will help to calm your overly excited nervous system. Replace the fearful thought with a new competing thought that distracts you. This new thought requires attention and concentration. In your case, you might want to find a style of studying that functions like this for you. Maybe hand write out the key points to the class material. Or walk around the room while memorizing the key points. If this doesn't work, try counting backwards from 1000 by 3's. This simple exercise is another helpful tool in gaining some measure of control over your thinking. For future projects, papers, or exams, develop a work or study schedule far in advance which breaks the work load into small manageable steps. Then strictly follow that plan each day regardless of your worry or fear. Whenever the obsessive fear starts to bother you, use the above steps repeatedly to address those anxious thoughts. If you follow these steps very carefully and completely, you will be able to break the stronghold that this obsessive-style of thinking has had on your life. It requires you to accept and to believe that these fearful thoughts are actually a type of an illness rather than a justified fear. Accepting this reality, however, will probably be the toughest part of this battle.

Feeling weak, stomach hurts, and i'm shaking...?

Hi Mindy,

The best answer is to go see your physician or visit a walk-in clinic.

Your symptoms are not specific enough to diagnose over the internet, and could be almost anything - from something minor to something dangerous. Any specific answer you get here is at best a guess. In the worst case it could even be dangerous for you to follow specific medical advice you receive here.

A doctor (or NP or whatever trained medical person you see) will know what else to look for in order to determine exactly what is wrong in your case and the best course of action for you and your specific issue.

What are the best ways to overcome stage fright?

Take each and every, small or big, opportunity of going on stage. I'll give a few examples:Volunteer for a magician or any other event which is happening on stage and is asking for volunteers. It can be any fun event.Start standing up and answering from the crowd. Stage fear is nothing but fear of facing the crowd. Hence, this is a baby step; when asked to answer or asked to speak anything while in crowd, grab that opportunity.Sometimes being the first one to say something is easy as there is no fear of being compared with previous answers. I and my friend always preferred to be the first team while presenting a paper in the university. This saved us from the fear of being compared with previous presentations right away.Find a friend who also wants to work on getting rid of the stage fear and help each other in the process. Motivate and support each other.Attend events in which you are a complete stranger. This way you don't have any fears of pleasing the known faces and you can be completely yourself. You don't fear of being judged or being mocked afterwards. It is said that if you want to speak for X minutes on stage, you at least need to have 2X(or more) content. Hence, prepare a lot.I have experienced that if you know what you are speaking then the fear is reduced by a great deal. Hence, know your content well and you will be more confident. In the initial phase, you can use a table, podium or a notepad to help yourself. There things help you stay confident, help you to hide yourself a bit from the crowd. Slowly, get rid of those things and you will enjoy a lot.Don't feel pressure of pleasing the crowd. Be yourself and you will be able to please your audience. All the best!

How do you cope with feeling uncomfortable during the first days of a new job and you can't fit in?

Starting a new job is stressful for most people. You don’t know the people or where things are kept. Everything is new. Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable. It’s natural in new situations. Breathe. Make notes to yourself of things you are likely to forget. Don’t try to fit in just yet. Concentrate on learning the job. Find someone you think is willing to mentor you and ask questions of them when you need to. No one expects a new hire to function at a 100% the first few weeks/months on the job. Hopefully in time you will have made friends and like the job. Good Luck!
