Old New Stories About Apathy

Apathy and emptiness?

Sometimes I have some apathy following a bad experience.I learned to cope with it.I think to a more enjoyable activitiy ,project or thought. Some people have an easier life and some others have an harder life.At the end it is always the state of your mind that is the most important. To survive mentally in this world, sometimes a person has to be strong.------------------- Emptiness as a human condition is a sense of generalised boredom, social alienation and apathy. Feelings of emptiness often accompany dysthymia, depression, loneliness, despair, or other mental/emotional disorders such as borderline personality disorder. A sense of emptiness is also part of a natural process of grief, as resulting of separation, death of a loved one, or other significant changes. However, the particular meanings of “emptiness” vary with the particular context and the religious or cultural tradition in which it is used ---------------- Apathy (also called impassivity or perfunctoriness) is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest or concern to emotional, social, or physical life. They may also exhibit an insensibility or sluggishness.

Often, apathy has been felt after witnessing horrific acts, such as the killing or maiming of people during a war. It is also known to be associated with many conditions, some of which are: depression, Alzheimer's disease, Chagas' disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, dementia, Korsakoff's Syndrome, excessive vitamin D, Hypothyroidism, general fatigue, Huntington's disease, Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), schizophrenia, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and others. Some medications and the heavy use of drugs such as heroin may bring apathy as a side effect.

In positive psychology, apathy is described as a response to an easy challenge for which the subject has matched skills

What happens to hippies when they get old?

I was just thinking about a hippie couple that lived in Central Park, New York, for decades in a small dwelling they had apparently built up a tree. I thought it was such a beautiful story. You know, these old hippies living in a tree house in the heart of the craziness of a modern metropolis. I thought it was outrageous that they got evicted from their home by the city.

So I began to wonder what happened to other people who "dropped out" during the 60's and early 70's. Do you fall into this category, or do you know someone who does? What is your (their) story? Did you re-adjust to mainstream society when the party was over, or did you continue to be a nonconformist to your old age?

Also, what do you think about the world today? It certainly didn't turn out the way the love generation envisioned it. Did you become disillusioned with the hippie thing or do you still hold on to it despite the increasing hostility of modern society towards ideas like that?

I know there isn't a definite answer to this question because people are different, etc., so all responses are appreciated. Everything about the 60's fascinates me because it was the decade that saw this enormous mass movement for changing the modern world into a more humanly tolerable place. That is something almost unimaginable today, what with all the phony commercialized individuality and social isolation, and the moral and political apathy among kids these days.

Is apathy bad? Pros and cons?

The problem with the general idea of apathy is a lack of action. Ignorance, self-interest and greed are usually the driving factors to apathy but it is a problem in itself. The lack of conscience towards anything outside of the self is nihilistic and ignores the suffering and problems that happen to real people. Apathy is nihilistic in nature because it posits that no one else that matters exists.

When we do not care, the world begins to fold in on itself and large, more serious problems arise. Global hunger, the killing off of entire environments, wars, depleted natural resources at a rate faster than we can replenish them are amoung some of the problems.

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy?

ApathyIt is about choice, ignorance isn't. In addition, Eli Wiesel said:Indifference, to me, is the epitome of evilThe opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of beauty is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, but indifference between life and death.US News & World Report (27 October 1986)

Can you help me with how to write this story?

The first step in writing a story, is knowing what exactly do you want to write. For instance, you have a story in your mind, you have to sit down and write it. Don't care about spelling or grammar. You are writing it because you want to and you won't rest until you do. You have to organize the plot line. Who's the hero? Who's the villain/enemy? What's going to happen? How you should end the story? Etc....

Now here's a mistake a lot of writers/authors do. They choose the title after writing the story, which is absolutely wrong. You have to decide what the title should be before even writing the story.

Here are the basic steps of writing a good novel:

1. Free Write: is a prewriting technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic. It produces raw, often unusable material, but helps writers overcome blocks of apathy and self-criticism.

2. Expand the book idea sentence into a paragraph summery

3. Plan the book summary

4. Writing the chapters: You have to know how many words should each chapter contain. For example, my stories usually contain 1305 words each chapter.

5. Story moral: It's not a basic step, but highly recommended.

I hope I helped!
