Braces really only hurt when they first get put on, and whenever they get tightened. When you first get them on they start to ache after about 2-3 hours, and then the pain goes up to maybe a 5 or 6 (with 10 being the worst pain imaginable) for a few days. You won't be able to eat hard foods, mostly just pudding and apple sauce and soup, because your mouth will ache really bad. After the first week or so the pain will go away and then in general they don't hurt at all. They will hurt like that again whenever you get them tightened, though some people say it hurts worse than others when they get tightened... I think it just depends on how you handle pain. Getting them off doesn't hurt at all, and they don't hurt at all after the braces are taken off. Good luck! I had braces twice and it wasn't that bad, it just sucks when you first get them on and for a few days after each tightening.
