While doing an online payment using my ICICI debit card, why do I see the name of the State Bank of India on the URL?

Firstly, before answering the question, I presume this is a transaction attempted on Irctc with your debit card. And to your question, the reason why are seeing SBI is because that's the payment gateway you have chosen while opting to pay with a debit card.Let me elaborate. There are broadly 3 - 4 parties (depending on the merchant) involved while making an online payment. They are (i) Card holder (you) (ii) Merchant (ex: Irctc) (iii) Issuer (ICICI in this case) and (iv) The Payment Gateway (which does the payment processing)IRCTC works with a wide variety of payment gateways and there are different players based on the payment method (Credit/Debit/Net Banking). IRCTC has likely partnered with SBI, Punjab National Bank, Indian Bank, Union Bank of India and Bank of India for the debit card processing. See the attached image. This is what you see while opting to pay using a debit cardSince a payment gateway is essentially a payment processing layer sitting between the card holder (you) and merchant (irctc), it needs to collect your card details on a secure and PCI compliant manner. Typically, gateways will redirect a customer to their page to collect relevant information such as card number, expiry date, CVV etc. As is the case, you too have been redirected to the SBI portal (see attached image). This should explain why your browser is detecting an SBI page. Also, once SBI detects your card issuer is ICICI, it will direct you to the ICICI page to complete the 2nd factor authenctication that RBI has made mandatory. The 2nd factor authentication is the ICICI page where you input either your ICICI online password or Numeric characters on rear side of your ICICI debit card or an One Time Password (OTP). Once all this is completed successfully, you are redirected back to IRCTC where your ticket is issued upon a successful payment. In summary, the flow generally goes like thisYou --> Merchant--> Payment Gateway Page --> Issuer Portal for 2nd Authentication --> Redirected back to merchantHope this clarifies.

What is safer for online payment, net banking or debit card payment?

It all depends brother. Security is just an illusion. Both of them are two different platforms. Both are safe but i will recommend net banking as safer . The reason being that net banking is otp protected (in india for all banks) while regarding debit card it depends on websites (if a website has 2-d or non vbv payment gateway it wont be OTP protected or by any other way like your vbv password etc). Though india lacks 2-d websites but most international websites are 2-d. India doesn’t have AVS (address or billing verfication system) to add any layer to payments on 2-d websites (most 2-d websites have AVS ). So debit card is not a safe option. Also to reset the password of debit card (in emergency) some data has to be required and that depends on bank say DOB , zipcode etc which hackers easily get via spamming. Net banking has limited use while debit has vast use but net banking is a safer option. And regarding OTP well on dark web you will find people who transfer money from dead bank accounts .. go and ask them someday how they do that . I know that’s too hard and consumes a lot tools.efforts, money of theirs (infact otp of many banks can be bypassed just by parameter tempering using a simple tool like burp , earlier SBI had this vulnerability until it got leaked on youtube and now many australian banks i came accross recently suffer this). On ground level if i speak well go and try your debit card on google play store and you will get my point (google play store in india is 2-d ).

Can I use a credit card as a debit card for online payment?

Credit Card and Debit Card are two different products.Debit Card is linked to your Bank account and the moment you pay for a product or service the amount is ddebited from your Bank account. When you pay using a Credit Card the Credit Card company bills you every month and you pay them using a cheque or by Bank Transfer. The credit card is not linked to any Bank account. If you link the Credit Card to a Bank Account it is no longer a Credit Card but becomes a Debit Card!
