What do these lyrics mean to you in your opinion?
The phrase "empty nest" almost always means your parent's home without kids in it. Sometimes these "birds" try to take away the joys and accomplishments of their grown kids because they may feel threatened by them. My folks are like that sometimes. Their old and bitter about how crappy their lives went so when their kids do something extraordinary they try to "steal" the fire from his heart. Not out of cruelty or vindictiveness, just because they feel kinda useless now. They are "strung from" their sad empty lives together. Now that the kids have their own lives, the nest doesn't seem as strong and full as it once did. They're barely hanging on. That's how I interpret it. Nice lyrics! I like the "empty nest" vs "emptiness" play. cool.

Like a lot of Dashboard Confessional songs, the song is about a diminishing/already diminished relationship. When Chris says, "love is like a role that we play," it means that his then lover was saying that "love is part in a play. it's a show for others to see, but most of the time, it's not real." Then Chris goes on to reply to his then-lover's statement saying, "But I believe in you so much, I could die for the words that you say," meaning that "even though your love may be nothing more than a part of some act, I really do love you--to the point where I would give my life just to hear to speak." So that's why Chris is "chasing a ghost of a good thing." the "good thing" is love, but there isn't any love left. maybe there was at one point, but Chris is stuck in the past and needs to move on. until he moves on, he'll be stuck "chasing ghosts." hope that helped!

I find these to be either clever/witty, moving, or both, that is poetic in some way and definitely original. Are they the most original?
