PS3 controllers are wireless. You only need the USB cords and USB ports to Pair (sync) the controllers, or to charge the controllers. Once the controllers are Paried, you do not need to use the USB ports (unless the controller needs to be charged). It does not matter how many USB ports are available, you only need one to Pair and charge the PS3 controller(s). To sync a controller, connect the controller to the PS3 using a USB cable and press the PS button. Once this is done, go to the next controller and do the same thing. You can have up to 7 controllers connected at one time, unless you have a Sony remote Paired, then you will only be able to have 6 connected at one time (the remote always takes the 7th spot, unless you delete the remote from the console). The numbers that are lit on the controller will tell you what number it is. To tell you the truth, if the controller wasnt made by sony, then it can be both. Because, controllers besides sony, not alot of effort goes into them. They break easier, they malfunction more. I bought one from gamestop awhile back, and it broke. So I took it back within a week, and got my money back, and bought a sony controller. The sony controller hasnt had anything wrong with it. Plus it the controller was 30 dollars and under, then its not worth getting. They cause alot of problems. SO, I would say that the answer to your question is that, its the Gamestop controllers, yours probably isnt the only one.
