Pms Gets Me Intensely Depressed .

Why do I feel depressed when I have my period?

(Pre-menstrual Syndrome) aka PMS depression is different from a woman to another. Basically, not every woman on earth suffers from it, but those who suffer are just getting so sharp pain miserably. On the other side, there is clinical depression, it just so happens to anyone on the planet any time, clinical depression can hit any woman unconditionally just like anyone else, and that is not linked to any feminine issues. In other words, PMS occurs in the first stage of the menstrual cycle, The difficulty with distinguishing between a woman who suffers from clinical or major depression vs. PMS is that about 70% of the women who do suffer from PMS depression and only about 15% of women who do not have PMS do have clinical depression. Clinical depression lasts much longer than two or three weeks, causes an overwhelming feeling of helplessness and frustration. (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder ) aka PMDD occurs in the two weeks prior to a woman’s period and then it is all gone. It also shows a decrease of symptoms as soon as the period starts flowing. There is a lot of distress, frustration, anxiety, anger, and irritability.A friend of mine -who’s a doctor- once mentioned that: the level of oestrogen and progesterone falls at the end of the menstrual cycle. oestrogen is believed to have a negative impact on the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that the body produces to make us feel good, happy, satisfied, etc.The question is: how to deal with this issue?. well, there are antidepressants used for this issue, and other less invasive drugs used as well. Fortunately, you can overcome it with non-pharmaceutical home recipes that can be easily used to eliminate this depression, such as herbals, supplements, and vitamins (you can consult with a doctor about that, don’t take anything randomly). There are lots of food to avoid when you’re suffering from depression, for instance; caffeine, salt, soft drinks, dairy products, and alcohol. There are mental tips you can follow. Like Yoga, it is so useful because it blends together exercise, meditation and relaxation all into one activity. It is very effective for any type of depression regardless of source.P.s: all this information is based on my knowledge of depression and mental health, I am not a doctor nor psychologist.

I feel really depressed right before I get my period.?

The fact that you are having suicidal thoughts means that you are not dealing with simple PMS, but PMDD.

I was diagnosed with PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) back in 2003, about a year after the birth of my daughter. After my daughter was born, I had a very severe case of PPD (postpartum depression), and I believe that the PMDD stems from the PPD.

During my PPD days, I was on many antidepressants, some antipsychotic meds, as well as antianxiety meds. They did help, up to a point, and then my medication dosage needed to be increased, eventually leading to a medication switch.

When the PMDD came about, it became even a darker time for me. I was suicidal every month, the desperation was horrible. NONE of the meds I was taking helped my case of PMDD, whereas there are many women who are helped by meds such as Prozac or the generic form of it, Serafem. They did not help me in the least bit. I was hospitalized at one point b/c of the PMDD... as well as once with the PPD.

In October of 2006 I began taking Yaz birth control, which has literally saved my life. I no longer take the other meds, except for an occasional Ativan for anxiety.

Here is an article about my personal experience... I warn you, it's quite intense.

If you by chance have PMDD, don't ever listen to anyone who tells you that it's "just bad PMS." It's NOT just "bad" PMS. PMDD is a highly debilitating condition, and it is definitely real.

Why do I get depressed sometimes during my menstrual cycle?

Depression can be a normal part of menstruation for many women. Fluctuations in hormones can cause an emotional imbalance. Estrogen and progesterone are suppressed and released by your body in a specific pattern that causes you to menstruate (description of the process here) while at the same time having a profound effect on your mood. And there are other reasons for depression during menstruation besides hormones. During their periods many women do retain water, causing uncomfortable feelings such as bloating and the sense that she's gained weight. This can make a woman feel self-conscious, upset, stressed, or depressed. The crazy food cravings and hot flashes don't make it any better either :PWhile on your period, you may have to go to the bathroom more often, turn down fun activities due to cramps or flow, or otherwise change your normal lifestyle to accommodate Aunt Flow. The unpredictability, messiness, and general "ugh" factor can cause a woman to become frustrated, irritable, upset, stressed, or depressed. Example: In high school I was on the swim team, but never went to a meet because my period just happened to line up with every single meet for three months. Gaaaaaaah. If you're feeling depressed a few days before your period, it might be PMS. PMS is basically many of the symptoms of menstruation, but before your cycle and often involving more emotional symptoms. As Teresa says, if you find yourself becoming severely depressed or depressed for long periods of time, you should talk to a specialist. If that's not the case, just try to remind yourself that your period's coming up/happening and your hormones are bringing you down, it's OK and will pass in a few days :) And have some chocolate :) :)

How can I stop being so depressed/cranky before my period?

I always get super irritated and randomly sad/mad and just feel hopeless before my period. Its like all my problems are x100. To top it off, I have the worst cravings for junk food. I've been on a healthy eating fix for the past few months but every now and then I will binge (usually around my period) but I've had issues with eating disorders and binge eating in the past so yeah. Anyway, I was cranky all day today and I totally just binged on cake until I wanted to throw up.. I had just gotten home from volunteering so I was really tired and it was so hot outside, I just kept eating and I havent touched anything close to cake in forever. I felt like a total failure afterwards.. every time I thought about it cried and now it feels really pathetic to write this down. I really wanted to shut everything down and cut myself or something (i also had self mutilation problems in the past but i am over it now, and it was never over something this insignificant). i have no motivation to do anything and everything my parents say to me pisses me off. i just sat here for the last ten minutes staring at the computer screen and literally banging on the keys. i have so much rage inside me.. when i went out earlier today i felt super fat and like everyone was judging me and kept having these random thoughts that i'd never fit into society, etc etc.. and now im just sitting here wasting my time. i have no motivation to do anything productive. i cant think about anything that would make me happy. i dont want to exercise and i dont want to do homework or talk to anyone or do anything. help?

Serious Depression on my period, why?

PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) can have symptoms into the first 2 or 3 days into the follicular phase of your period

PMDD is a serious form of PMS (premenstrual syndrome). If you have it you will find a predictable pattern. Symptoms begin in the late luteal phase after ovulation and end shortly after menstration begins.

Mood symptoms are dominant in pmdd, with anger, anxiety and depression.

5 of these must be present to be PMDD; Main symptoms include:

feelings of deep sadness or despair; depression (as you said)
suicidal ideation (as you said)
feelings of intense tension or anxiety
increased intense sensitivity to rejection or criticism
panic attack (like when you had trouble breathing, stomach in knots)
rapid and severe mood swings
bouts of uncontrollable crying (as you said)
lasting irritability or anger
apathy or disinterest in daily activities and relaitonships
difficulty concentrating
chronic fatigue
food cravings or binge eating
insomnia or hypersomnia
feeling overshelmed or feelings of being out of control
increased interpersonal conflicts
increase or decrease in sex drive
increased need for emotional closeness

Common physical symptoms:

breast tenderness or swelling, heart palpitations, headaches, joint or muscle pain, swollen face and nose; an altered view of one's body - sensation of bloating, feeling fat or actual weight gain

Treatment:

Vitamin B-6 (with food so it metabolizes correctly) I recommend B-Complex, has all the Bs.

L-tryptophan - a serotonin precursor, - provides significant relief in a large daily dose

SSRI's - said to be excellent with no side effects, Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine).

Regular exercise and balanced diet.
