Pretty Pieces For Solo Viola

Viola solo pieces for an audition?

This question makes no sense because certain pieces are enjoyable for certain people, and one of these pieces may be the one, or perhaps all of these pieces for all we know.

Play some of Paganini's Caprices specially written from the viola. There are more for the violin, but these pieces are awesome. That's IF you have the experience. We don't know your experience, so it's hard to say what pieces would be good for an audition. You need to keep in mind that your audition pieces you should be able to play very well, if not almost perfectly.

Best wishes.

I need a hard viola solo?

The J. C. Bach concerto is about the same level as the Hoffmeister, as is the Handel-Casadesus in b minor. Then there are the Vaughan-Williams Suites for viola and orchestra.

Unaccompanied, try the Bach cellos suites. Those are often requested at auditions.

For viola and piano, it's wide open. The J S Bach Gamba sonatas are popular. Try the Britten Lachrymae or the Hindemith Trauermusik if you want something slow and luscious. The Eccles sonata is another standard.

So I am a pretty good violin player and I am looking for a good classical piece to play, but I don't want one that is hard. What piece should I start with?

Here are some of my suggestions.I don’t really know what you mean by “pretty good,” so I’ll just include any piece that I think a “pretty good” violin player should be able to play. The 1st movement of Spring from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.Might be kind of hard. For players who are used to 5 ~ 7th positions.Canon in D by PachelbelWill most likely be pretty easy.Allegro by Fiocco. Will be easy. Only goes up to 3rd position.Vivaldi concerto for 3 violins in F majorThis is a group piece though, so you can really only play this if you have other people to play with.2nd and 3rd violin should be manageable. It does go up to 5th position, if I remember correctly.1st violin might be hard.Orchestra parts will be a stroll in the park.Violin Concerto in A minor, RV 356 Op 3 No 6, by Vivaldi. Will be manageable. In my opinion, I highly suggest playing pieces by Vivaldi. He made a lot of great violin pieces for intermediate players. Also, stay away from Paganini’s Caprices. Like… obviously.Happy practice!

Which, in your opinion, sounds better and why: Violin or Viola?

Viola.

... squeaky high things drive me nuts.
