Prunes Help Create Bowel Movements But Not Me

11 wk old constipated, 3 days with no bowel movement but keeps trying to go?

My doctor advised me give a teaspoon of prune juice in a bottle everyday for a week. It didn't help so she then advised me to give him 1/2 ounce apple juice with 3 ounces of water. He was about 8 weeks old at the time. There was a LOT of poop, though.

They sell suppositories for baby constipation, but you may want to ask a doctor first. Hope he feels better soon, poor baby.

Why do beets make my bowel movements red?

The purple-red pigment in beetroot, betalain, is not digested so passes through the gut untouched giving the red colour to bowel movements. Betalain is also pH sensitive and changes colour in different substances. It is purple-red in acid solutions such as vinegar but will turn a murky blue in alkaline. Next time you have beetroot take a small piece and sprinkle it with some baking powder or bicarbonate of soda to see what I mean.

How long is too long without a bowel movement?

We should aim to have a bowel movement between twice a day to once every two days. Most likely your dietary habits changed, so your dietary fiber intake is too low for having a good defecation. You need 25 to 30 grams dietary fiber daily, since bran is too light not effective, take broken 4 tablespoonsful of linseed/flaxseed/rapeseed, mixed with yogurt, fruit juices or plain water and afterwards drink another large glass of water to make your stools wetter and softer, works within ±3 days, if it works keep it up, or be constipated again.

How come prunes make you poop but not plums?

Jackie obviously doesn't know that prunes are just dried plums.
Ordinary plums will also make you 'go', you only have to eat twice as many.

Can eating prunes cause constipation?

well...prunes are supposed to make you poo!! buuuuut, too much fiber can actually make you constipated. try shredded wheat & lots of water?

Why do prunes make me gassy but dont make me use the bathroom?

One prune is not enough. You need to eat a quarter cup or so and drink lots of water.

They are quite healthy to incorporate into your daily diet.

Gross Constipation? Prune Juice? (Ladies only please)?

Hey fellow animal lover! :o)

Actually, I have chronic constipation from medications that I take, so I know a lot about this subject and let me tell you it is MISERABLE. (As I'm sure you already know). I've had it so bad you cannot even imagine. I've tried just about every kind of fiber you can imagine, cleanses, diets, and even a couple laxatives and here's what I've found:

-I don't touch laxative pills or teas with a ten foot pole. They always make me feel really sick and overdo it. They are harsh on your system too and can give you diarrhea for a whole day or more, which is not good.

-Out of all the fibers that I've tried, "Psyllium husk" is BY FAR the best. Check the back of fiber supplements they will tell you what kind of fiber it is. Metamucil usually uses psyllium, but not a lot. I just get it straight from the health food store and drink a big tablespoon in warm water with honey every night before bed. Be sure to drink it fast and with a full glass of water. It gives me no cramping or tummy upset, NO diarrhea at all and it makes your poop fluffy and slimy, so it comes out with absolutely no effort (it's kind of wierd) I feel a little bubbly and gurgly inside for a while after I drink it but no pain....kinda cool.

-If you want to go within an hour and get it just about all out, you can try a "saltwater bath" I've done this and it worked really well, I felt amazing afterward. It did hurt my tummy and there was some cramping, but it was fast and eficient and chemical-free. Lie on your right side for a half-hour after drinking it to get it right into your intestines. I put the link for the recipe below.

-If it's really really backed up, you might want to use a suppository to break up what is right at the end of your colon, so it doesn't hurt you on the way out. That's really not fun. :o(

-To avoid constipation in the future, eat nothing but fresh fruit every morning for the first few hours of being awake (kiwi works best for me) This almost always helps me go. And, as stated, lots of water and adequate fiber. Some excellent sources of fiber are

avocado
peas
lentil
black beans
artichoke
pear
almonds
pistachio
brussels sprouts
apples....just to name a few

Happy pooping! :o)

Is it safe for newborns to have prune juice?

It's normal for the digestive system of newborns to change in the first few weeks of birth. Their digestive systems are getting used to working on their own. Our doctor told us that in the first few weeks, the baby will probably have multiple bowel movements a day, but at some point that will stop. It is normal for the baby not to have a bowel movement for few days after that.I wouldn't give her prune juice, just because she hasn't had a movement in days. If she is eating well, having wet diapers and not in pain, then she's fine. Trust me, you didn't break the baby by feeding her milk/formula.If she is in pain, you might want to talk to a doctor. Chances are she just might have gas, or colic.
