Questions About Becoming A Chief

Firefighter questions? How to become a fire chief? Please help!?

There are about 30,000 different fire departments in the US. Almost 3/4 of them are volunteer fire departments. So, there is no one correct answer, they are all a little different.

In most career departments, you go through a series of civil service tests, medical and physical agility tests and a background check. They then train you at the fire academy, where you learn everything that you need to be a firefighters (or FF/EMT, depending on the department).

Some other departments require that you be a certified EMT or paramedic before taking the test. Those certifications are available in most community colleges, or through ambulance service providers.

Many fire departments run "Quick Response Units" (First Responder Units); Engine companies manned by EMT level firefighters, but the ambulances are staffed by Non-firefighter paramedics. While yet other departments have many FF?Medics, who man both engine companies and ambulances.

While EMS has become strongly linked to the fire service in some states, it has not always been like that, and you will still find some areas where the fire service avoids EMS functions. In Florida, fire and EMS are strongly linked.

Many volunteer companies accept members as young as 14-16 (junior or cadet members), however, they can not function as full fledged firefighters until age 18.

Lots of community colleges (and a handful of 4 year colleges, like the Univesrity of Maryland) offer fire science or fire technology programs. It is not bad to have a background in higher education that is related to the fire service. However, what really counts is that training you get in certified fire training programs, whihc offer National Certification up to NFPA standards. And, you don't need a college education to get that training, only the sponsorship of your fire department.

Learning the job, and job related SOPs, rules and techniques is what is most important when taking promotional tests in most career departments, although some departments do gave extra points to members who have a degree.

To be a good fire officer and eventually a Fire Chief, you need knowledge of fire fighting (and usually Rescue, and EMS and HazMat) and a knowledge of people and lots of leadership skills. These are things that don't come from books.

How long does it take to become a crew chief as a 15T MOS?

Good question! First you have to master the maintenance skills first and then you apply for the position. After that you get on flight status. I was active for 4 yrs and then went National Guard for 16. I have twice the flight time as active duty because of funding. Its allot easier to go to flight school in the Guard than it is active duty because of the available slots and funding. Now I fly as a Warrant Officer. Not bad for being ex enlisted. This is un heard of in active duty but very possible in the Guard. Go figure. Whats really funny is I ran into my old active duty enlisted buddies while going to Ft Rucker Alabama for a school for the Guard and they thought I was impersonating an officer. They still had to salute me. LOL!

Requirements for becoming a fire chief?

I'm thinking about becoming a firefighter, and I'm wondering what it takes to eventually become a fire chief. I graduated with honors from a four-year university last December, so I have a bachelor's degree. The problem is, it's not in fire science or any type of management. With enough experience, is there the possibility that I could eventually become a fire chief? Will I have to get an associate's degree in fire science (which I might do anyway)?

How did a person of the plains Indian group become a chief?

The Indian chief of any particular tribe had an extremely important role in the lives of Native Americans. Many people see the chief as the main leader, and everyone else is simply his minions and followers. This, however, is not necessarily the case. While the chief has been chosen to be the special leader of any given tribe for various different reasons, it does not mean that there are not others within a tribe who hold certain important rankings.

The chief was usually considered the greatest warrior of all the tribe, earning him the ranking of chief. This fact aside, Indian chiefs were also medicine men, spiritual leaders, and assistants to the other members of the tribe in times of both peace and war. Indians were not simply assigned to the role of chief, but instead a long trial period and proof of strength were required.

Becoming a chief took time, and whoever was chosen had to prove to the others that he would be a strong and effective leader who could help the tribe stay safe. The chief was able to bark orders, and the rest of the tribe in most cases will obey them. This is what makes the Indian chiefs of old appear to be so fierce, because they would stop at nothing to win battles, resulting in some bloody wars on the American Plains.

Some famous Indian chiefs include Geronimo, Sitting Bull, and Cochise. There was a chief for every single tribe. Just like our world today, all groups or nations need some kind of strong leadership, and that is what the Indian chief could provide. In today’s modern world, the chiefs are a much more peaceful people, while still exhibiting strong leadership qualities.
