Reflection On Transformative Education

What are the 5 pillars of transformative education?

Psychobabble that is resposible for the poor education that most kids are getting these days.

Research John Dewey.

Which is more transformational, Landmark Forum or Tony Robbins?

They are both transformational! Each individual takes what they need from each conversation and to say one is more valuable than the other is dependent on the individual.Tony Robbins you can do in your own time and he gives you a good understanding of yourself. Landmark on the other hand is much more fast paced and intense. The main difference between the two is Tony Robbins is just a very intelligent individual who has a great understanding of the mind. I think he is very surface level however he does have some deeper material.Landmark forum gives you the ability to self reflect on an almost subconscious level. Just because you can reflect on it doesn't mean your life will change. They just give you the ability to. It's up to you from there. Both are great but I started with landmark and wouldn't have it any other way. Landmark is a crash course. They jam so much info into such a short period of time. Super intense, I cried a couple times but you gotta break stuff down to rebuild. To break it down you have to be aware of it!My suggestion is, do landmark first as I did (only the first two courses) even just the first is fine as the first one I got 100x more out of it than the second. Then taper off into other spiritually/psychologically tuned speakers.Landmark is incredible for people with baggage too. However it is difficult for them to maintain an open mind (during) because of the baggage. (Not all can cope with more pressure than what they have already put on themselves.)Tony Robbins is good for knee jerk motivation or understanding of yourself. He doesn't give you any self reflection tools as landmark does but he does target very specific areas (which is why a lot of people like him)Landmark as the door opener, a better understanding of yourself. Tony Robin's to Target specific areas of yourself or your life. (Easier to “click” “breakthrough” , “realise" after landmark)

What would a radical/disruptive strategy for improving K-12 education look like?

Ultimately, the problem cannot be solved unless we come up with a scalable solution. Making education more individualized and fun is not scalable without the use of technology. It also isn't scalable to have 1 teacher : 10 students as we're stuck with 1 teacher : 30 students. What's scalable (as Jon Bischke) said is technology. You can create games, videos, interactive applications that enable all students to learn and make learning more fun. So we should create technology that delivers educational content to all students. That way, teachers can spend all their time on tailoring the education to the specific needs of the children. Instead, currently, teachers spend 50% of their time (or in the case of Universities, 90%) lecturing about content. That's useless, because content is roughly the same - all around the world. If a nationwide or worldwide system were created where the basics of WWI were taught to everyone via a standard video / game, and the teacher's job was simply to facilitate a post-video discussion and assign/review homework, that would be a much better world.Michael Staton said it best on a panel discussion at a conference last week, "Teachers don't want to deliver content. It sucks to stand up in front of a room and repeat the same thing over and over again. Teachers should be facilitators, not methods for content delivery." (Sorry if I butchered that, Michael). This is very similar to what happened when textbooks were invented (not that I know anything about that; but one can posit). Textbooks standardized the material the students read, so teachers spent less time delivering content and more time facilitating the learning of that content. A new revolution needs to occur where a standard set of videos and software come about that help students learn. Because videos and software (like text) is infinitely scalable, we can drastically reduce costs and raise the average bar of what students learn. Then, teachers can simply spend their time doing what they probably prefer anyways - answering questions, engaging students, facilitating the classroom.

Why is peace a holistic concept in education?

peace  education  is  essentially  transformative.  It  cultivates  the knowledge base, skills, attitudes and values that seek to transform people’ s mindsets, attitudes and behaviors that, in the first place, have either created or exacerbated violent conflicts. It seeks this transformation by building awareness and understanding, developing  concern  and  challenging  personal  and  social  action  that  will enable people to create conditions and systems that actualize nonviolence, justice, environmental care and other peace values. There are diverse principles and concepts associated with holistic education such as students finding their own meaning and identity through linking education to life, communities, nature, and humanistic values; reverence for life; concern for social justice; and a passion for learning.

Why is this considered as borderline plagiarism?

My sentence: "Within 'transformative education' theory is 'transformative literacy' which involves implementing a critical pedagogy perspective to challenge traditional practices of literacy (i.e. reading and writing) (Marsh & Hallet, 2008)"

Another classmates': "For the purpose of this research, transformative literacy will be defined as a way of viewing literacy as more than just numeracy and traditional print literacy, but as a form of meaning-making that has the power to transform both the student and the teacher (Binder & Kotsopoulos, 2011; Campbell, 2011; Millard, 2007; Wright, 2011)."

Why would mine be considered as borderline plagiarism? The sentence is paraphrased from what is in the textbook.

Should I be worried about my daughters career possibilities if she is majoring in physics?

No.You should be worried if your child has been brainwashed into believing that the short time window (school / college years) is the ultimate make or break moment in her life. That she’ll be screwed if something goes wrong during this short period of time. That if she doesn’t pick something ‘practical’ she will ruin her career prospects.Sure school matters. Sure college can add value (and for some professions is even inevitable). But neither is everything. Neither is a guarantee that you won’t end up in a dead-end job. Neither will make or break your life. The choices we make in our teenage years, when everybody expects us to pick something ‘practical’, because we’re grownups, matter much less than our perception of our career. Why?Because unless we live under some kind of dictatorship we can change our mind, can’t we?So many people forget about this simple rule. They think they will have to do this one thing they pick in their 20s for the rest of their lives. This simply isn’t true and never was for free people. That’s a myth parents still sell their children. Our late 20s, our 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond is not the time to cash in on our school grades and college degrees. It’s the time to learn, grow, improve, and reinvent ourselves.Furthermore, there is no denying that our habits determine the quality of our lives. We are what we repeatedly do.Thus, I totally agree with Robert T. Kiyosaki who said:Our lives are a reflection of our habits more than our education.Sure, formal education is important and all children should have access to it.But formal education alone is not this transformative thing that will, in the most significant way, impact our children’s lives.Their daily habits will impact their future lives to a much greater extent.Instead of obsessing over sending your kid to the most expensive school in town ask the following questions:Is my kid developing a habit of continuous learning? Is my kid developing a habit of questioning everything / being curious in her life?Is my kid developing a habit of eating healthily? Is my kid developing a habit of exercising regularly? Is my kid developing a habit of being good and considerate to people? Is my kid developing a habit of being frugal/ controlling her spending? If not, what can I do to help her develop those habits?Obviously, those are not the only worthwhile habits. Use this list as a starting point and go from there.
