Seniors Do You Have A Stereo System That You Love

Where do senior citizens like to hangout?

I'm gathering a list of senior citizen hang outs.

What are some places they like to "chill" and socialize with other senior citizens. I already have the YMCA or YWCA and churches. I've looked up some other places like "old folks" homes anymore suggestions?

Seniors, do you have a stereo system that you love?

My mother is 80 and her much-loved but ancient stereo system is dying fast. They no longer make it.
I'd like to replace it for her as she enjoys listening to music daily.
I know she would like a small(ish) unit with a multi CD player and a cassette deck, but that is kind of hard to find these days.

My audiophile spouse is no help, wanting to string together a complex system with various components that must each be powered on and controlled separately. Likewise, stereo stores seem to be all about "whole home audio" and "surround sound" these days. My mom is a brilliant, sharp woman, but her eyesight isn't what it used to be and arthritis has taken a toll on her hands - she'd be happiest with something easy to use. And who really needs a 6-step process to play a danged CD anyway?!

I'm looking at the Bose Wave system, but it doesn't have her requested cassette deck. The only CD/cassette units I've been able to find so far are cheap, junky looking things that look like they fell off the back of a discount store truck - with terrible user reviews to match.

Have any of you been able to find a modern stereo system that does everything you want it to do without undue hassle?

What advice would a 70 or 80 year old person give about the way the life should be lived?

If I may, I would like to add to what Dan Maloney wrote, especially regarding his advice to “Act happy.”My father acted happy throughout his life. He had many friends, and he lived just past the age of 90. Not only did he act happy, he went out of his way to help others, including being a Boy Scout Leader for many years. I tend to take after him, almost always with a smile on my face, and I would certainly say that my life has been blessed with good fortune overall, with a few potholes along the way for contrast.I’ve endeavored to set a good example for those closest to me—especially my children, and on several occasions I’ve attempted to understand, and even explain, why acting happy works. Prior to the study of the wisdom of Kabbalah, the best explanation I could come up with was the concept of fate called Karma, as in: “What goes around comes around. Now, I know that acting is serious business because it’s a law of nature, i.e., a force that operates much like the force of gravity. (We may not understand it, but it’s always there.) The habit of acting in a certain way becomes second nature, until we’re unable to act any other way because it brings us pleasure. If you combine acting happy with acting favorably toward others—for example, by not spreading negatives about others as Dan mentions, then you have a winning “recipe” for happiness. This is because the sensation of happiness emerges as a result of feeling that you’re in a correct social environment, i.e., a supportive and balanced one.Hopefully, I’ve whetted your appetite to explore this matter more, as it is indeed a way to influence your fate. Is listening to music through headphones/earphones harmful?

Headphones and earphones appear to be the most damaging. Since noise-induced hearing loss is a result of intensity (loudness) and duration of exposure, these devices may be capable of inducing a permanent bilateral sensorineural hearing loss — especially if they are used at a volume setting of four or above for extended periods.  The amount of hearing loss that one will suffer is related both to the volume, measured in decibels (dB), and the duration of time that one is exposed to the sound.Sound at 85 dB or below is considered safe. Think about it!If one is exposed to sounds greater than 90 dB for an average of eight hours per day without hearing protection, hearing loss will most likely result. As the volume increases, the safe time of exposure decreases. Here are some loudness/time facts to consider (the unit of measurement isdecibel):At 95 dB, damage will occur after four hours of exposure per day.At 100 dB, damage will occur after two hours of exposure per day.At 105 dB, damage will occur after one hour of exposure per day.At 110 dB, damage will occur after 30 minutes of exposure per day.At 115 dB, damage will occur after 15 minutes of exposure per day.At 120-plus dB, damage occurs almost immediately. Most portable stereo music systems produce sound in the range of 95-108 dB at level four and in excess of 115 dB at level eight. For comparison, a soft whisper is usually measured at 30dB; busy traffic at 75dB; a subway train at 90dB; a gunshot blast at 100 dB, a jet plane at 140 dB; and a rocket launching pad at 180 dB. Sounds above 140 dB usually cause pain. If you have to speak in a loud voice to be understood, background sound is probably in excess of 90 dB.

People on section 8 housing?

I was reading an article from an online newspaper about section 8 and some of the comments from readers really shocked me.
Basically the article was about more funding for housing programs, and people were leaving comments like oh great more help for the scum and druggies who destroy landlords homes etc. I couldn't believe it Does everyone really feel that way about people that get help??
Why do people automatically assume that people that get any help are either on drugs or sell drugs?

I am working alone on a project. What should I do if I feel stuck at some point?

Being alone on a project can be challenging as you now also face. Having been here quite often, I can think of some of the things I did when I needed some help. If you work for a large organization then try talking to seniors on other projects. I found that office days on Fridays were of great help as I could then talk to colleagues about the project. Another thing that can help is to talk to your project sponsor or even other project leaders. Third is to use the Internet/social media. Social media, like quora, can help you find what you are looking for. It can still feel isolated but at least you have some guidance on what to do. If none of these work, then make an effort of getting the project finish asap so you can move on to another one with more peers or seniors around.

How can I stop my 13 year old daughter from talking back and being a smart mouth? Help! Grounding doesn't work

How far do you go with the grounding?

If she is grounded "to her room" with her computer, cell phone and TV, that's not much of a punishment.

Take away EVERYTHING she has that she really likes. Take her allowance if she gets one.

Make her do chores around the house - laundry, dishes, cleaning the restrooms.

You HAVE to figure out what will actually get her attention and USE IT!

Good Luck!
