Is light necessary in a fish aquarium?

LIGHT plays a very important part in the maintenance of biological equilibrium in an aquarium, and it is therefore essential that its quantity and quality should be sufficient.Natural light from the sun is insufficient in quantity for an aquarium tank situated at the back of a room, but may be excessive for one placed on the window-sill, at least in summer. Although its quality is excellent, natural light cannot be regulated satisfactorily. It should not, therefore, be used as the sole source of illumination for an aquarium, but only as a supplement used in moderation.Fluorescent lighting is the most suitable type for an aquarium, provided the correct type is chosen. Very white light is not suitable, and the best fluorescent tubes for an aquarium are those designed for horticultural purposes.Duration of lighting:In normal aquarium tank with a suitable number of fishes and plants, the lamps should be switched on for about eight hours a day during the first three months after the tank has been set up.Finally, it should be remembered that although fishes have no eyelids and cannot, therefore, close their eyes, they still need to sleep. They should, therefore, have a period of at least eight hours darkness in the twenty-four, and care should be taken not to switch on the lighting too suddenly as this may cause a form of panic.

Can I use an aquarium light as a single indoor plant grow light?

1. Incredible Energy & Cost Savings A 90W LED UFO Grow Light produces as much light as a standard 400W HPS (High Pressure Sodium) light. According to the US Dept. of Energy, the average price of power is 10.7 cents per kilowatt-hour. For one year of use (12 hours per day) a 400 W HID light adds $187.46 to your bill while a 90W LED Light adds ONLY $42.18!! That’s nearly 80% less!!

2. Little or NO Heat Produced Unlike traditional lights, LED Grow Lights produce virtually no additional heat. In a side-by-side study, a single-unit LED light had NO significant impact on room temperature after 2 months of continuous use!
3. Eco-Friendly Unlike HPS and MH (Metal Halide) lamps, LED lights do not contain filaments and other toxic metals which are difficult to recycle and harmful to the environment.
4. Last Longer than Standard Lamps An average HID light lasts an estimated 10,000 hours (2.3 years) compared to an LED Light’s extended life of 60,000 hours (11.4 years).

5. No Ballast Needed Unlike other lighting sources that require ballasts that have limited life spans of 3-4 years, LED Grow Lights are fully functioning units that require no additional ballast

6. No Need for Heavy Reflectors Built-in directional adjustments mean no need for costly, hard-to-install parabolic reflectors. The result is a lighter weight, convenient and versatile LED Grow Light.

7. LED Grow Light Outlet EXCLUSIVE While Tri-band spectrum lighting is superior to dual-spectrum, LED Grow Light Outlets offers an amazing 4-Band Spectrum: red-blue-orange-white… ALL IN ONE LIGHT!

How do I fix my aquarium hood?

What kind of hood? Flourescent? Look for a a round plug that says something like FS-4 30watt starter with condensor. Wal-Mart has two packs for 1.97 here. Had to change one a couple days ago... Usually, if a bulb dies, so will something else...

Edit: if you are comfortable, unplug the fixture for 30 minutes to let any static die off. Carefully remove the bulb and unscrew the reflector and examine for damage. If you see a removeable starter, try to match it. If the ballast is blown, you may as well replace the fixture. Check craigslist for your area, it's a 30x13? 29 standard and 20 long dimensions, both fairly common and parts are easy to come by; people upgrade stock lighting for plants/corals and pawn off old equiptment rather cheap. I just picked up a 55 (standard 4 foot) with a stand and light/hood for 20 bucks, light was non functional. I changed the starter for less than two dollars.

Edit 2: does the bulb glow at the far edge near the pins or flicker? Is any heat produced from the fixture?

Planted Aquarium Help!!?

not one of those plants requires special bulbs, he/she was just trying to get you to spend more money ... and the eclipse tanks have good lighting already ... all of my tanks are low light, two of which are eclipse tanks ... the lighting in those tanks (with the bulbs that came with the tank) is sufficient to grow everything you have mentioned, and there are even more low light plants that do not require special bulbs or co2 ... there is not much difference between T5 and T8, think of it like windows vista to windows 7, not much difference :O)

Aqueon Hoods for aquarium?

I have a 20 gallon tank with a 30" aqueon deluxe full hood.
I want a planted tank so the T8 17w tube 8000K it comes with is not enough.
I have absolutely no knowledge on lighting, I only know how to snap the tube into the aquarium reflector ( the white inside?)
What tube should I get so I can grow plants?
I dont know what this brand's maximum wattage is, I dont understand what t8, t5 whatever tubes mean, all I know is that the white inner part can only fit a 24" tube.

Can I use a terrarium hood for my aquarium?

Hint: The top of an aquarium has "wet conditions."
So if the hood isn't suitable for wet conditions, don't use it on an aquarium.

And yes, it is best to have a glass cover on any tank.

Are plant LED lights safe for use?

Some are not safe! Be careful!!Why?1 , Take a $10 LED Grow Light Bulb for example.Where can you buy this type LED bulb? Haha! On Amazon, you can find some appearance looks like this!No safety Cer, reach, Rohs, Photo biological test test..Below I turn it on, and you may find the shard edge.LED part, why using this LED???? this LED efficiency is not good! The 2 generation LED.Some issues listed here:1), Spacing!Every standard has the requirement of spacing for electric product, like IEC/EN 62560, UL 1993.2), the small hole on the metal housing!! For UL(USA/Can) it is not allowed! There is a 2 mm test probe, it can insert inside to touch the live part!!Driver Part, where is the LED driver? Small scale size means???the white plastic housing seems bad? How can say this? The requirement of UL is at least V-O flame! So my advice is to do not buy this snake oil LED grow light bulb.2 , $12 IKEA Grow light BulbIKEA Grow light Bulb! It is tricky. Famous brand, no safety issue, reach, Rohs, Photo biological test test pass. All these on the package. Here is the look of the bulb, PAR30 shape type .LED chips! But this EMC package type is better than the NO.1 .Turn it on!The issue is the Light color! the spectrum is the key thing to green. Many claimed they are quite good! The output spectrum:Too much Green!!! near 74 %!It is a bit hard for the consumer to buy the right LED plant light.
