Should I Do More Extracurricular Activities

What are the best extracurricular activities for MIT?

What To Do In High School | MIT Admissions - has official guidelines on the sameExtracurricular ActivitiesSome students feel so much pressure to get into the "right" college that they want to make sure they do everything "right"—even do the "right" extracurricular activities. Fortunately, the only right answer is to do what's right for you—not what you think is right for us.Choose your activities because they delight, intrigue and challenge you, not because you think they'll look impressive on your application. Go out of your way to find projects, activities and experiences that stimulate your creativity and leadership, that connect you with peers and adults who bring out your best, that please you so much you don't mind the work involved. Some students find room for many activities; others prefer to concentrate on just a few. Either way, the test for any extracurricular should be whether it makes you happy—whether it feels right for you.By the same token, some applicants struggle to turn themselves into clones of the "ideal" MIT student—you know, the one who gets double 800s on the SAT. Fortunately, cloning is still for sheep. What we really want to see on your application is you being you—pursuing the things you love, growing, changing, taking risks, learning from your mistakes, all in your own distinctive way. College is not a costume party; you're not supposed to come dressed as someone else. Instead, college is an intense, irreplaceable four-year opportunity to become more yourself than you've ever been. What you need to show us is that you're ready to try.

What extra curricular activities should I pursue?

It’d be great if you pursue ECs that are rare and outright unconventional. I happen to know of a kid who trained for one hour, every single day, for two years in order to win National Spelling Bee. Then there was this other kid who solved one cryptic crossword per day for a year and then won a national event. Both these activities, as you can see, are strikingly unconventional - very few people win spelling bees, and even fewer win cryptic crossword contests. Also important to note is the level of commitment; when colleges see that you’ve invested time and consistent effort to a particular goal, they automatically assume that you will demonstrate that same dedication upon joining them.As a tip, I’d suggest not getting involved in too many activities - pick maybe a few that really, really pump you up, and do your absolute best at them. Try to win awards at the national/international level, and also vie for leadership positions (very important).Having said that, each student has a different context, so admissions officers will typically understand if you have limited opportunities. But even then, try to make the most of what you have. All the best, and I hope you make it to the college of your dreams!

What should I do to get more extracurricular activities in school?

You should try to narrow the ones you are doing since you are a rising senior, that means you don’t really have much time building up your resumé. I would recommend you focus on one things and do it well. Also, don’t volunteer stuffs haphazardly. Volunteer the kind that you really love. Because that is what matters and what you will be writing in your college application essay. Hope this helps!

Extracurricular activities in high school?

If you're aiming for a "great" college (the super selective schools that only admit a small percentage of their applicants), then your extracurriculars will be extremely important. But it's quality, not quantiy, that really matters. It's much more impressive to have a few activities that you've been heavily involved in and really excel at, than to have a long list of random clubs that you had little involvement in.

Which activities you choose really doesn't matter; colleges don't prefer certain clubs or activities over others. What matters is your level of dedication and expertise in the activities you do.

Colleges look at sports and other activities with a couple things in mind:

1) Sports and other activities can be very time consuming, especially if you participate at a high level or hold leadership positions. Students who have been extremely involved in activities outside the classroom, while ALSO maintaining superior grades, have shown the discipline and time management skills necessary to be successful at college.

2) Colleges don't want students who just go to class and study. They want students who will get involved and contribute something to the campus community, making it a more vibrant and enriching place for everyone. They want athletes to play on their varsity and intramural teams; musicians to play in their bands and orchestras; singers, dancers and actors to take part in their performing arts groups; writers to contribute to campus publications; philanthropists to help out with their community service efforts; leaders to head up clubs and join student government groups.

Obviously, they don't expect every student to do ALL of these things, but they do want each student to do at least one thing, and to be outstanding at it. It's a common myth that colleges want "well rounded" students. What they really want is a well rounded student body, with each person contributing in an area where they really shine.

As you choose your activities for high school, pick some things that you truly enjoy and can stick with all four years. Aim for leadership positions (team captain, club president, class officer, etc). If you're able to earn some honors or awards in your activity, especially at the state or national level, all the better.

Hope this helps some! Enjoy high school!

Part-time jobs vs extracurricular activities?

I believe that teens (high school students) should be participating in extracurricular activities- whether it be baseball, chess, math club,etc- instead of trying to take on the responsibilities of adults. They have many years to work- why not let them learn responsibility, communication skills, teamwork, rejection all through extracurricular activities. Maybe teens could be encouraged to volunteer for organizations that help others in need- helping others that are less fortunate can be a great lesson in itself- and rewarding at the same time. These are the same skills that they will use with a job- but with sometimes harsher consequences.
With school activities these LIFE lessons can be learned along side their peers and others their age. I believe these activities can teach teens even more than a part-time job ever could.

Which extracurricular activities should I do to get admission in an elite institution?

...but I'm lazy...That says it all.Being lazy, there is Nothing that you can do that will impress those or similar elite private colleges.   Being the president and founder of the Lazy Person club won't get you in.You have to Do something and Be someone.  You have to Lead, and demonstrate Passion and Commitment for what you are doing.  You have to do that with demonstration of time budgeting and time management.    Burning the candle at both ends and the middle and not even noticing it.  You don't ask for letters of recommendation, the teachers are Asking you if they may be privileged to write a letter of recommendation for you, because of all the Great things that you do.   Easy.

Do i need extra curricular activities for college?

You don't necessarily need a lot of extra-curricular activities to get into a good school. What colleges look for is that you have been committed to your academics as well as being committed to something that interests you. Some people think that they have to join every club and activity to get into the best college but that isn't necessarily true. If you commit a great deal of your time to something like a sport, community service, etc then you have a good chance. Just be yourself. Commit to you academics 100% and find something that you truly love to do then show that the schools how much you love it.
