Which 100 things are essential to own?

I love this question, as I'm trying to figure it out as well. Like any question, the answer is: "it depends". If you have kids, are self-employed, have a very particular hobby or handicap, the answer is going to be different from my situation (full-time job close to home, no kids or spouse). As 'items you own' I see things you would take with you when you move, or things that you have independent of where you live. Here's my first draft:I see a few different categories, which add up to 100:Essentials for living (56)Transportation (4)Information devices (6)Cooking (27) Other (7)In essentials for living, I aim for 56 items:5 pieces of underwear4 pairs of socks5 t-shirts5 pairs of trousers5 shirts5 jumpers/hoodies5 pairs of shoes5 coats/jackets10 personal hygiene items (toothbrush, paste and picks, soap, shampoo, razor, shaving brush and soap, contact lenses and fluid)Bed and linen (5 items)Iron/ironing boardTransportation is easy, 4 items:BikeTire pumpTire repair set (cheating, multiple items in one box)Tool set (to adjust height of saddle etc.) Information devices (6)Laptop and mouseiPad or KindleHeadphonesMobile phoneDigital cameraCooking (27) is not absolutely necessary as you can eat out, but I like to include it in my lifestyle:Chef's knifeSauce panFrying panLarge bowlChopping boardKettle8 plates/bowls8 pieces of cutlery4 containers of some kindCoffee maker (in my case, a French press or Moka Express)Other (7) is a varied list of things I like to own:Notebook and penPaintings/sketches/photograph (5), if I really narrow it down, would prefer to have moreThe gap between this list and my real possessions is big. This makes my life less simple than it could be, but also adds some richness. For example, I love books, photographs and kitchen items, which quickly add up in number and bulk but not necessarily in hassle.

How is life without gadgets?

I remember life in the 1970s. We had a landline phone, no call waiting, basic tv, no cable, a radio and television record player. Technically, those are “gadgets” as they were technology for that period. But they would not be considered basic necessities by today's standards.I can tell you life was simpler and less expensive. We had quality time together as a family, played until sometimes after dark (in the summer and on weekends) with the whole neighborhood. Our parents didn't “Facebook”, “Twitter” or any other social media. They paid attention to us. Often it would be kids vs grown-ups in baseball, football, etc. We caught fireflies, flew Korea, built homemade treehouses and forts. We learned how to survive in nature by fishing, hunting, picking raspberries and honeysuckle. We would ice skate on a real pond not an indoor rink. That same pond we learned how to fish in and also swim. We interacted with adults and peers in person through play and face to face communication with no cell phone attached to the hip (and occasionally combat fist on fist…no guns or knives.)No video games. Not until around 1980 when Atari hit ( if I recall) and soon Texas instruments started competing next to another company that is on the tip of my tongue thus starting the era of competitive video/computer game systems. That was the beginning of kids being stuck indoors glued to video games. Shortly followed by radar ranges, now known as the microwave and cable TV which we couldn't get living in a forest. Only people in town along main streets could get it.Soon TV's had remotes around 1981 and we're digital along with clock radios and everything else. The computer age was about to explode and so was society and social development/interaction. Kids stopped playing baseball, football, etc in our
