Should I Go See A Doctor For My Dislocated Thumb

Dislocated Thumb ??

Pack it in ice! That will relieve the pain and also help you see if there's any damage to it. If it starts to swell up or turn a blue-ish color, see a doctor. It is possible to break your thumb and still be able to move it (like a hair-line fracture or a contusion). Keep an eye on it as you move it, does it look different than your other thumb when you move it? Like is a piece of bone rubbing against the skin or anything?

If you suspect that it's broken, find a popsicle stick or something and tape it to your thumb in a straight position to help hold the bone together until you can see a doctor in the morning. If it IS broken and the bones rub against one another too much, tiny shards could start to splinter off. That would make it harder to fix and also hurt much more. No need to go running to the emergency room or anything, they can't do much more than splint it anyway (only it would be a piece of aluminum instead of a popsicle stick, and they'd charge you $50 to do it).

For now though, just try the ice. Good luck! I hope you're ok!

Should I go to the doctor for my sprained thumb?

A trainer is not a doctor & can't diagnose you. If s/he says otherwise, they are full of it.They can guess, sometimes accurately. However, that doesn't make them a medical professional of any sort.

You need to get it looked at. The discoloration is significant. It could be a sprain, dislocation, or it could be a fracture. Either way, it should be treated, This is your body, & you only have one. Take care of it. Even a sprain can me serious & possibly require surgery.

Until you see a doctor, rest your injury. Ice it (don't put ice directly on it, wrap it in cloth) for 15 minutes, take the ice off for another 20, & repeat this process throughout the day. Take 600 milligrams of ibuprofen with food. That will lower the amount of swelling. Elevate your injury above heart level in a position of comfort.

I think i dislocated my thumb?

You may have solved your own problem. Lucky you! Hot soaks + gentle massage with pain-relieving cream may ease recovery. As long as the black/blue area does not 'jell', not to worry. Don't work the area for 2 weeks, other than a 'wiggle'. Expect 8wks recovery time.

If the discolored area should jell (not likely), then see a walk-in doc for proper care.

How do you tell if your thumb is dislocated?

Any of the joints in the thumb could dislocate. The joint will be misaligned, you will see a bulge of tisse where it is usually more flat, it will hurt like blazes and you probably won’t be able to move it much. If you suspect your thumb is dislocated, you should seek emergency care.Source: Steph Robbins Ministries

I think I dislocated my shoulder, what should I do?

Could you try the ER? Why not go to the hospital now? Please don't "pop it in" by yourself if you're not trained medically- and you will need to describe the situation further.Anyway, that joint is the easiest to dislocate. And there are a few forms:Please see a medical professional ASAP. They will take an X-ray to better figure out what the exact problem is.Sorry- we can't diagnose you over the internet and if you suspect anything, don't take chances and wait till the morning.

I dislocated my left thumb today but it popped back in on its own and now I can dislocate it when I want?

hey there! I went snowboarding today and I fell and i dislocated my thumb...or at least that's what it looked like...but when I checked my hand it was already popped back in...it's only when I went to lift myself off the ground that I felt it dislocate again and if I put enough pressure on the joint it'll dislocate....it repops into place if I remove the pressure it doesn't stay dislocated...I went to the ski clinic and they made me a thumb support thing with tape and a stick and stuff but I'm gonna go tomorrow to a real clinic and have it examined better...it doesn't hurt at all...unless I squeeze my joint with my right hand I feel a discomfort...I haven't tried again to see if it re-dislocates since I haven't taken the thumb support thing off since they made it but I just wanted to know in advance what kind of answers I might/should expect tomorrow from my clinic visit...thanks in advance

Dislocated thumb help/: PICTURES INCLUDED! ...?

So on 17th I injured my thumb. It was very painful, swollen and deformed. My mom took me to the ER (on the 18th) where they took x-rays and said for us to see an orthopedic doctor. So the next day (19th) we saw an orthopedic doctor and he said I ruptured the UCL in my thumb and I needed surgery to fix it and put me in a temporary cast. He scheduled surgery for the 21st. The next day, which was 20th a hand specialist wanted to see me. He was not in a good mood at all and he was very mean. It took off the temporary cast and started moving my thumb around. I was crying in pain. He said nothing was wrong and put me in a cast for 2 weeks; he never looked at my x-rays. I got my cast off on January 3rd. When I got my cast off my thumb was still deformed and painful. I ended up going to physical therapy once and I was suppose to go for 2 weeks. From January 8th - now my thumb has still been extremely swollen and deformed and its a little bruised. Its very painful and I can't flatten my hand out at all. My mom did make another appointment with physical therapy for the 18th of this month but I CAN NOT move my thumb at all its very painful. I have been icing it and doing some exercises with it but its really painful, it just makes it worse.. I'm scared to go because its going to hurt and I will cry . /:

What should I do?
Do you think I should see if the PT doctor thinks I should see an orthopedic doctor?
Do you think I should have had surgery?

BTW my thumb looks like ..
If I put my hand palm up, my MP joint is like pushed into the palm of my hand and the MP joint is bent at a 90 degree angle past where it it should be bent back, and the IP joint it straight. It looked ****** up lol.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2ymt2it.jpg - not my picture but it looks a lot like this.

http://i49.tinypic.com/57j3l.jpg - not my picture but looks a lot like this, but more swollen and bruised and the top joint of the thumb is more straight.

I dislocated my thumb, how long should i let it heal for before playing guitar again?

i bent my thumb backwards recently and had a sever sprain. My whole hand swelled enormously. that must have been over a month ago and it still hurts. after two weeks or so i could slowly start to play again, anything to quick or complex and it hurt. bar chords are still a problem, but not as as bad as before. give your hand time, no need to re-injure your hand or slow down healing. I would ask a doctor though, like others said.

What can be done to fix an old neglected dislocated finger joint (3 months after fracture) for gaining full hand function? The doctor suggested rehabilitation, so is this really going to fix my finger?

this depends on the location of joint, degree of displacement and duration (3 months as here)if the displacement is not complete then rehab is better than other intervention like surgery.some special cases like complete displacement of base of thumb, however, need surgical correction almost every time irrespective of duration.

Can a dislocated finger be fixed after years?

This is a difficult question to answer without seeing an x-ray. I’d need to know in what the position the bones are in now.Besides relocating the bones (they can always be broken and put in the proper position) all the soft tissue ( the tendons, ligaments) are probably shorter in length than they need to be since it has been years since they have been stretched to proper length. They would need surgery to correct this problem.Another problem is a finger is pretty small so that a small amount of swelling can be very problematic (too little room inside) whereas the same amount of swelling in an arm for example, would never even be noticed. The swelling can cause problems as well as the dislocation.I suggest you consult with a good hand surgeon. That doesn’t mean you have to commit to surgery. A good surgeon would tell you to take time and think about it if he/she thinks surgery is a viable option at all.Injuries are much easier to fix ASAP rather than wait as you have unfortunately just learned. The finger could have rather easily been relocated if done soon after it dislocated. I relocated mine myself immediately after I dislocated it, but I am a hand therapist with 40+ years of practice so unless you know what you are doing, get help. Good luck.
