Should I Take Calculus

Should I take Calculus 2 or Calculus 3?

I'm going to be a freshman in college and a declared math major (with also a double in economics). I took AP Calculus this past year and had a mid-high 90 in the class and also took the BC exam in May. I did well on the exam and now understand the McLaurin and Taylor Series as well as the Parametric equations and Infinite Series a little better. I only have 2 weeks until classes start for me and was wondering if it would be too hard to start in Calc 3? I'm really strong in mathematics and think it wouldn't be worth taking a class where I already know everything that's being taught. Also do you feel Calc 2 is harder than Calc 3? I have heard mixed reviews on this.

Anyways, any opinions would be great. Thanks a lot for your time.

Do i need pre calculus before calculus?

Yeah, it's best to take pre-calc before calc. My husband teaches calc at the university here and he gets really frustrated when unprepared students try to take his class. If you're wanting to be a doctor, you'll probably need calculus anyway, so you can always take it in college. I took calculus as a senior in HS and then I re-took it when I started college. I understood it a lot better in college because they went more in-depth and explained where all the formulas come from. And college calculus goes at pretty much the same rate as HS calculus. You'd learn the same general principles in 1 year of HS calculus as you would in 2 semesters of college calc.

Should i take calculus or stats?

Take Statistics.
I took Statistics because it is very useful in everyday life.
I never took Calculus and I got Straight A's in the 4 undergrad Chemistry classes I took.
I never did graduate level Chemistry though.
If you are going into law statistics will be much more helpful.

Should I take calculus or physics?

Physics as we know it today was born out of calculus. Sir Isaac Newton in particular developed calculus so he could work on physics. Leibniz also developed calculus at about the same time.If you want to learn more than just basic conceptual physics, you should have a knowledge of calculus, and probably ordinary differential equations at some point as well.If you must choose one or the other to take first, instead of both simultaneously, take calculus. Physics will make much more sense, you will be less reliant on memorizing formulae as you can derive them yourself. Also calculus is extremely handy for all sorts of things.

Should I take calculus in high school?

Yes, take calculus. Colleges want to see that you have challenged yourself. Also, if you take calculus in high school, that means you can move on to bigger, better things in college.I took AP calculus BC in high school. I was kind of bad at it (failed most of my tests), but somehow scraped an A- (thank you, homework) and did well enough on the AP exam to be able to skip basic baby level college calc and take multivariable calculus in college. Which kicked my butt. I am not taking math anymore. But at least I didn’t have to sit through intro college calculus first, I was able to take it in high school, and that was so much less stressful than it would have been in college. It was also good in that I didn’t have time to forget all the precalculus I’d learned between 10th grade and actually taking calculus.Just do it. It will help you get into college, even if you don’t get a great grade (colleges generally would rather see a B or C in a hard class than an A in an easy one, and they like it when you take important subjects like math, science, english, and history throughout high school instead of stopping when you finish your graduation requirements). It will show that you put in effort and challenge yourself. Colleges love that kind of thing. As a rule of thumb, if you find yourself wanting to put in less effort and wondering if that will hurt your chances at college admission, the answer is usually yes.

Should I take Calculus or Pre-calculus in grade 12?

I already took pre calculus in grade 11 but didn't do so well on it. I am not good at maths. I have the option of repeating it and I will receive a credit regardless of which one I do. I just don't want to look stupid to universities. I also feel like it is a waste of a year. Your thoughts?

Should I take calculus or statistics for premed?

I've always been a fan of students taking statistics because it's surprisingly overlooked in the curriculum of many high schools. It would certainly give you information that would be much more useful to you in your career (both professional and academic). Medicine deals with tons of statistics both on the macroscopic scale (like understanding mortality/motility rates, drug efficacy, etc) and on the microscopic scale (ie. most cellular process have a stochastic nature).

As far as getting into a good premed program is concerned, it will look better on your transcript if you get an A in stats as opposed to a C in calc. And though college level calc might be slightly more difficult or fast paced, you'll have a lot more resources at your hands for quality help when your in college.

My advice is to go to stats.... and stay awake!

Should i take calculus as an 8 week summer course?

Well if it were up to me i would take that course in the summer by itself so i don't have to worry of taking that course with other courses and concentrate on just Calc.

I was taking Calc. in the evening this term with the rest of my scheduled classes in the morning. i had to drop because i couldnt handle all of the Calc. work
