Should I Take Narcotics For Post Shoulder Surgery Pain

How long does the pain last after arthroscopic shoulder surgery?

Shoulder surgery is rough! I know, I just had a Type II SLAP Repair and Capsular Plication 5 weeks ago. I was taking pain meds every day until last week. If you are having to take your medications more often than prescribed, you need to contact your surgeon and try a different pain med. What does he have you on? I took OcyContin for 10 days, 20mg with Percocet for any breakthrough pain. I switched over to just the percocet at day 11 and just came off everything about 9 days ago. You may need to have the doctor check your shoulder. Infection is always a possibility and can cause extreme pain. If it is not an infection, then you need better pain control. Call his office and let him know what is going on. Maybe he can put you on a stronger dose or a different medication all together. I hope that you feel better soon. Just keep in mind, it does get better

Shoulder surgery tomorrow and i am very nervous?

If they give you a nerve block, which they probably will, you won't have much pain the first day or two, but there will be some pain afterwords. The best thing you can do is to make ice your friend. Also, be sure to follow you surgeon's advise. Get use to sleeping in an upright position for a few days and if given a sling, use it. Just remember, that it will get better, especially if you go to physical therapy and listen to what they say. Also, don't forget to take your pain meds!

How bad does shoulder surgery hurt?

I had shoulder surgery a year ago to repair my labrum and to tighten the shoulder joint because I was constantly dislocating my shoulder. The surgery was no fun, very painful, and I did not sleep a full night for almost 3 months. The physical therapy is very intense and painful (in the beginning) and it does take a long time. I was in for 8 months. But, it feels great now and I have been able to do all the things I did before my injury and surgery. Depending on the level of your pain and what is found in the MRI, your only option may be to have surgery. When certain parts of the shoulder are torn, there is no amount of PT or time that will repair the injury. That was the issue in my case. I had a SLAP repair done with 2 anchors and an Anterior/Posterior capsular plication. I thought that it would never get better and that I made a horrible mistake until about 4 months into it, but then it improved steadily (slow though) and now it is fine. If I ever had to do it again, I would because I know the pain is only temporary.

And one more thing; for people who have very loose joints with extreme hyper-mobility, you will lose range of motion when compared to the other shoulder, but this is only because we are so used to having the hyper-mobile shoulder joints. When they fix the shoulder and tighten it up, it feels the way most people's shoulders feel. It's just weird to us, if that makes sense. Good luck with the ortho and I hope that you don't have to have surgery. If you do, you can email me and I will send you some tips on how to get through the first few weeks in a sling!

Will doctors give narcotics to someone after surgery if they used to be an addict?

Narcotics are NOT the only form of pain relief after Surgery. There are other techniques depending on what kind of Surgery you are having. If you are having a hysterectomy then I will give you a list of things you can discuss with your anesthesiologist before Surgery and discuss with him/her your issues. Here are some of the techniquesa) use of local anesthetic infiltration with supplemental analgesics called Non steroidals ( brufen. voltaren, ketorolac, paracoxib), Paracetamol and Tramadolb) use of Ketamine as an infusion ( small doses 4 to 6 mg/hour)c) Nerve blocks using Local anesthetics - some very new techniques are available (TAP block)d) Epidurals using local anesthetics - can be done as an infusion for many days tooe) Intrathecal blocks using an infusion of local anestheticsf) While doing the surgery the Surgeon may be able to infiltrate those nerves, responsible for the post op pain, directly under visionEpidurals and intrathecal catheters can stay in for 3 to 4 days. Pain gets progressively better and less intense and by day 4 you wont need much analgesia and can be controlled by things like non steroidals and paracetamol. You must discuss these options with your Anesthesiologist and you can have effective post op analgesia without the need for opiates.Hope this helps. Good luck. Let me know how it goes. Importantly, it is very important to be armed with knowledge before you have a chat with your anesthesiologist. As you can see none of those techniques mentioned have any use of opiates.

Will I feel pain after my nose surgery?

You may experience pain or discomfort following the procedure. Usually the pain would go within two days after the surgery and the pain experienced is a minimal one. Most often your surgeon would prescribe pain medications in order to control the pain. Further if the pain persists, then you must talk about it with your surgeon to resolve it.More Info: Best plastic surgeon in Bangalore
