Should I Talk To My Doctor About Adhd

What kind of doctor do I see about ADHD?

It depends, in a way, on what kind of help you want.If you want an expert discussion of symptoms plus a sense of whether you are a good candidate for meds, you may prefer a psychiatrist or a neuropsychiatrist, with lots of experience helping ADDults. Note however that fewer and fewer psychiatrists do more than diagnose and prescribe these days (too expensive); for more personal insights and tips you may also wish to consult a therapist or a coach, again skilled with ADDults. If you want a more technical evaluation, you might wish to consult a PhD psychologist who will have a toolkit of tests that give a range of metrics about how your attention and learning compare to other adults, A psychologist usually does not do more than diagnose, but might make referrals to allied clinicians from MD to EEG to therapists and coaches. Again, specific experience with ADDults matters because the clinical judgement of the diagnostician interprets the results. Note also that not all clinicians agree that psychometric tests are conclusive; on that point, psychiatrists and psychologists have been known to debate quite a bit.To get a stronger impression of what patients themselves think about their own  experience (good and bad), including what to look for when choosing a clinician, you might try some ADD communities online (e.g. Addforums.com) or join one of the major support groups such as ADDA or CHADD each of which, I believe, still have their own online communities too. You might also check if ADDitude Magazine still exists.Last but not least, for specific names of local clinicians there are lists and directories (e.g. addconsults.com) and again, ADDA or CHADD which also may have chapters near you. PsychologyToday online also has lists of local practitioners with descriptions of specialties that you can search by keyword. The Edward Hallowell clinics also have branches in multiple cities too.Apologies in advance if some of these sources are no longer active, but hopefully it will help launch some good Googling. Best of luck!

I'm embarrassed to talk to my doctor about ADHD!!!!?

Hello,
I am ADHD. I got diagnosed gosh at 30 something! Two of my kids are diagnosed as well.
I spent time on the only drug I could take, I also have seizures and other health problems. We can not take the redalin for it is known as street speed for a reason and it has been reported to put people who have seizures in a seizure.

It is nothing to feel embarrassed about, however it is the way the doctor treats you as to how you sometimes feel speaking to a doctor.

ADD is everything but the movement. So if you are not hyper I would talk to the doctor about ADD.

We are not on any drugs for this. I choose after being on a drug as I said and had HORRIBLE side effects. I would not let them put my youngest on the drug and my oldest did try it and had problems as well. Two out of the three of us had horrible side effects.
There are ways to manage this. It takes work and family support, but can be done. You might need to except this first. Does not sound as if you except it. It takes time. We do not want this or any mental health condition. Others have no clue what life is like with such problems!
ADD/ADHD is also on the autism scale which I do not consider a good thing at all!! We are different but there are good things about it too!
Excepting yourself is the first step. I am a older person who just happens to be diagnosed ADHD. It is hereditary. One just does not gets it out of the blue. Please stay away from alcohol and street drugs, very common for people who have this to get hooked on such things.
We tend to be workaholics, or those who get into things we like and go overboard. But do you no we are usually smart people who know a little about a lot. Our attention spans just are not very long LOL!! We get board quick!
If you need to talk there is my email addy on profile and do not worry about rambling on. Something else we are known to do :0)

Should I talk to my doctor about my height?

Anorexia definitely stunts development. Pretty severely too, because of the poor nutrition, you’re probably a good four inches below genetic height. You should’ve contacted your doctor much earlier, as that is the most logical thing to do. At age eighteen, most males, and females have exceeded the period of which growth occurs. Unfortunately, medical treatment such as growth hormone can only be utilised when growth is still occurring. Once growth stops, you need to opt for surgery, which is incredibly effective, but costs around £100,000.So you should talk to your doctor about it, because you could possibly still be in the growth period. If you are, growth hormone can be administered, and growth should be accelerated noticeably, but this treatment is only most effective in early growth years.

How do I ask my doctor to increase my Adderall dosage?

Have you already talked to your doctor and been turned down? That would take a completely different answer so it is important to give that information.Asking is and should be simple. If you have been diagnosed with a disorder that Adderall is used for then the doctor should have talked about it in the first place. If you are just being shy about it then remember when you are about to ask that this medication may change your life to one as close to normal as you will ever be. That should give you confidence. If you are simply looking to get the medication for some personal use then there is no way to ask. Those that do this kind of thing make a tough life for those of us that need it even tougher. It’s wrong and for many good reasons and the reason I just stated is the cruelest one.

How soon do doctors prescribe ADD/ADHD medication?

Usually, too soon.

Today I went to the doctor to talk about my ADHD medication, and they made me take a blood test. Yesterday, I smoked about 0.4 G hash. Will they find it even though they aren't specifically looking for hash? I am 16 and very slim. I weigh about 56 K.

He could have suspected drug use and wanted to be sure. Your eyes could have been bloodshot or by the way your clothes smelled, which is a dead giveaway in a 16 yr old for some kind of abuse.Hash, makes your ADHD symptoms way worse, I mean seriously, smoking hash is the last thing you want to do with ADHD. Anything that can slow down your learning and take away your motivation is really bad for you.Normally, blood work for ADHD is looking at norepinephrine levels, which is severely affected by cannabinoids. Depending on what you smoked it could have been a big red flag for the doctor and his staff. If your doctor is a mandatory reporter for drug abuse, you could be in a lot of trouble with the police.Don’t know about your countries laws, but I’d recommend getting rid of everything, washing your clothes, and laying very low for a long time as it takes the police a while to get around to these types of reports. If you are in China, Saudi Arabia, or Malaysia, I’m truly sorry for you if you are caught.

Is it OK to consult a doctor and take ADHD meds?

I'm sorry you find yourself in this stressful situation.  You are smart enough to know that you cannot keep "burning the candle at both ends." Something is going to give. You don't mention the country where you live.  Is it an area that recognizes ADHD and where you are more likely to find a competent professional?Even in the most medically sophisticated American cities, it can be a challenge to find competent ADHD treatment.  You really have to self-educate and self-advocate. The risks are not as great as you might think...IF you don't simply turn yourself over to the doctor and unquestioningly follow.  The stimulants take effect quickly; you don't have to wait days or weeks to see the effect. So, you can start at a VERY low dose and increase slowly, being careful to monitor effects (and asked a loved one to share observations). If you were given an anti-depressant while having ADHD go untreated, no wonder you had a bad reaction. It happens far too often. You sound smart and accomplished. If you identify a professional you trust, and work with that professional, I bet you can find the help you seek. But you must educate yourself first. So you can effectively evaluate the professional and help to make medication decisions.Good luck!

I'm 15 and think I have ADHD, but I feel weird talking to my parents about it. What should I do?

First, don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions or to label yourself. As someone who actually has been diagnosed with a variety of neurochemical disorders, you do not want to go down that path. I understand its kind of cool, and it can become a defining characteristic that helps make you different from everyone else, and it helps get some attention and make sense of some of your struggles. What you can do is tell your parents you aren’t feeling well and would like to go see the doctor. You can say you have a really bad headache, or your neck hurts, or your chest hurts or anything else. The key is, you need to have the discussion with your doctor first and let them give you their professional opinion. Depending how that goes, you can choose to have your doctor talk to your parents with you. No matter what, the first step is the medical diagnosis so start there.

Can you tell me about Trazodone and ADHD?

I went to the doctor today for a chest cold, and decided it was time to ask/talk about my adult ADHD. I was diagnosed with it as a child, and stopped taking any meds when i was a teenager, b/c i wanted to ''face it on my own." I explained to my doctor that my mind races at night, i can't focus, i interrupt people, i'm very hyper and all over the place, get mad and worry very easily. i'm sure there could be other things wrong, but i just know its the ADHD. My doctor who is normally awesome, prescribed me Trazodone, an hour or two before bed. He said it's a mood stabilizer, and that it will help me sleep straight, which is a good thing. However, I did some research online and nowhere does it say its a mood stabilizer, that it helps with ADHD, and I'm actually reading it makes you very tired the next day. I need something for my ADHD and that doesn't zombify me. I don't know what to do. Does anyone know if Trazodone can help with ADHD and if it really makes you that tired the next day. This is why i haven't taken meds for years, b/c i want to prescribed the right thing.
