Should I Tell My Dentist About My Eating Disorder

Can the dentist tell I have a eating disorder?

Agreed with the above. Generally patients with bulimia will have caused erosion of the enamel to their teeth. Most of this will be evident on the tongue side of the tooth rather than the side you see. Id rec getting help or at very least if dental is a concern brush and rinse well with water immediately after you purge. That said, a psych eval and treatment would be best for you. Bulimia is very dangerous for many parts of your body

Should I tell my dentist about my eating disorder? I have struggled with bulimia off and on for 10 years, and I have a few teeth they’re checking for cavities.

I would strongly recommend it. Just mention it while they are updating your medical history, which they likely ask about every time you come in, especially for a check up. It likely won’t affect the outcome of your appointment’s treatment too much, but they be be able to tweak your treatment plan a little to make your outcomes even better. Your dentist and hygienist have your best interests at heart. This information gives them valuable insight into your relative risk of and rate of decay, and can help them give you educational information and product selection assistance in the event you come into another period where you are actively purging, to help you protect your teeth. There may be clinical signs of it, particularly on the backs of the upper incisors that you can’t see, and they might already strongly suspect it, especially if they have known you for a long time. They will appreciate the trust you have in them to disclose such a thing, as there are often a lot of heavy emotions connected with eating disorders. You can do it! <3

Eating Disorders: How can you tell if a (possibly) bulimic girl is vomiting in the shower?

As an experienced bulimic, there are a few more things I am always careful to hide or think of excuses.- Red eyes right after vomitting - "I was just taking my make-up off"- Full nose right after vomitting- Bruises on (right) hand from the teeth - "I don't know what's going on with me, I'm so clumsy lately"- "Getting shower" right after a meal - "Why is that weird, what's wrong with you, people?!"- Awful smell in the toilet - "I don't know what I ate so bad today"- Often complaining about acid in stomack- Lot of high-caloric food missing after being left alone at home - "Why would I eat that, I don't even like that particular food" or "I'm about to get period so I'm hungry all the time"- Loud and often burping- Usually feeling depressed after going out of the toilet- Eating very little when people are looking - "I'm just not that hungry today" or "I feel sick today, I must have eaten something bad last night"- Being addicted to chewing gums (to take mind off of food)- Being addicted to sugar-free candies (to take mind off of food)- Playing loud music in the shower (to hide the sounds)- Traces of vomitt on the toilet role- Traces of vomitt on the floor or carpet- Pain in the neck (from holing your head often in an uncomfortable position)- Drinking water right after shower- Often drinking milk (to neutralize acid in stomack)- Very often drinking water or other low-caloric drinks (to take mind off of food and make her feel full)Other indicators:- Very fast weight loss- Low self-esteem- Obsessed with weight- People (celebrities) that she finds beautiful are mostly underwaight- She feels uncomfortable talking about food or weight or she talks about it all the timeHope this helps a bit. Good luck.

Can my dentist tell my parents I purge...?

If you're under 18 then they can tell them.

Can A Dentist Tell When Your Bulimic ?

I have seen a lot of damage done from being bullimic. The acid from your stomach typically errodes your enamel and can cause massive decay. I am sure you can tell yourself if this is happening. Your teeth will appear yellower in color and be hypersensitive to temperature. Depending on the dentist, they may relay info to your parents.
This eating disorder runs in my husbands family--everyone has it to some degree. I still don't understand it and probably never will. I don't know why people with this don't want help and get so defensive and angry when anyone mentions it?

Why can't I eat after going to the dentist?

You can't eat for 30 mins only if you have had a fluoride treatment. It's so it gives the fluoride time to work on your teeth and if you eat or drink you are just washing it down your throat and not strengthing your teeth.

Can my dentist tell my parents I'm bulimic?

Alright basically I've been throwing up every other day for a few months, I don't know if it's really bulimia I mean I let myself digest food on days I have lacrosse practice and I don't throw up everything just the bad stuff, I overeat a lot and it makes me feel better when it's out of my stomach. anyway, I have a dentist appointment coming up and I know he'll notice. I'm not stupid I know my teeth are bad even though it's only been a few months. I want to know if he'll tell my parents since I'm a minor. Do dentists take the hippocratic oath? I mean I know if it's life threatening he has to say something but it isn't that dangerous I'm controlling it. Do dentists have doctor patient confidentiality? Thanks! (:

Will my dentist be able to tell that I am bulimic?

Your dentist may mistake the GERD for the bulimia, I doubt it though. It's hard to say without knowing the condition of your teeth. It's not just the enamel on teeth that bulimia destroys, it's the soft tissue surrounding the teeth that is burned off from the acid and eventually erodes.

In order to be cured of any one affliction, all problems must be considered and need to be resolved, the body as a whole needs to be treated. It's good that you are seeing a psychologist and trying to get the help needed, but is he aware of the purging? Just "seeing a doctor" and actually being "treated by a doctor" are two different things. Hiding "parts of the problem" from your psychologist, may effect the "treatment" as a whole. If you are hiding the purging from him and everyone, it will not only cause damage to your body, teeth and tissue, if it doesn't kill you first, but you will eventually be found out by the devastating effects this leaves on a body.

A cavity should be the least of your concerns right now, although I am glad your getting it taken care of now. I only hope you get the care you need, for all of your problems, and especially for the bulimia before your health and your teeth are damaged beyond repair. Good luck with your treatment, I wish I could be of more help.

Additional information: If your "recovery" isn't the issue here then why is there "so much emphasis on it" even to the date of when you started to purge, I wouldn't have been surprised if you had given the exact day and how often. Frankly I don't know you, so I try to give the benefit of the doubt although I've had my share of patients who say one thing, and really mean another, this sounds a little like that. If you are getting help, that is good and I wish you the best. Just don't lie to your dentist, we always know the truth just from looking at your teeth and tissue.

Courtney offered an excellent response to this question. Hope you are getting the help needed too Courtney, wish you both the best and Merry Christmas!
