Sim Unprovisioned After Unlocking Phone

Is unlocking a phone a good idea?

Look at it this way:

Almost all GSM phones come from the manufacturer (e.g Nokia, HTC etc.. ) as unlocked phones.

Your local carrier buys it and subsidizes it. Which is why a phone that would normally cost $500 - would cost you only $199. BUT, that's because you're signing a 2 year contract.

The reason they lock it is it prevents you from purchasing a phone from them - that they are subsidizing - and then jumping to another carrier.

And no - you will not get charged extra for using other carriers frequencies Or for anything at all. As long as your phone supports the frequency used by other carriers you are charged your normal rates.

And yes, it is legal. You can buy unlocked phones direct from manufacturers or from importers and other 'non-carrier' stores. And there is nothing to stop you from unlocking a cellphone.

You won't be charged roaming - IF you use a local sim card while abroad. Of course, if you go abroad and still use your Cingular sim card, you will still get charged roaming.

The main advantage of course is the ability to swap sim cards. So you can swap in a Cingular sim card for a TMobile sim card at anytime.

There are really no disadvantages to unlocking a cellphone. Except that it is significantly more expensive having it done here compared to other countries. Unless you know someone who can do it for you cheaper.

Unlocking is not for everyone. If you don't plan on using different sim cards or just plan on staying with one provider and are not going on vacation abroad, there really is no need to unlock your phone.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

What does Sim not provisioned MM #2 mean for a cellphone?

On a new phone, just give your service your sim card number.

If you get a "Sim not provisioned mm#2" message on a Go phone, it's probably because you have not put money into your account for two months, so they canceled your account. I called ATT today after I got the mm#2 message. (You have to jump through a lot of hoops by the way, so be prepared for at least 20 minutes of being transferred.) They told me they had canceled my account because I might be dead. I told them I was still alive, so they said to go to one of their corporate offices. They gave me the addresses of two offices which were only 2 miles from my house. The man I spoke to put a note on my record that they were to give me a new sim card free. I called the office and they verified that the new sim card would cost nothing, and that it would only take ten minutes to get a new one. All I needed to do was tell them my old Go phone number.

I have to say that I could not find a stipulation anywhere in the ATT literature that said the Go phone account would be canceled if no additional payments were made in a two-month period. It's not on the box, and it wasn't in the manual. I dared the man I spoke to at ATT to find it, but he couldn't. This is a very questionable business practice - especially for a "pay as you need it" plan.

What dose unlocking your cellphone do to your phone?

Unlocking your cell phone will simply break the limits of which service you can use it on. For example, if you have T-Mobile and you unlock your phone, you will be able to stick a SIM card from AT&T into the phone and it should work under that service. This is meant for GSM phones and services (T-Mobile, AT&T, Cincinnati Bell), opposed to CDMA phones and services which do not use SIM cards (Verizon, Sprint, Cricket, etc.)

Unlocking your phone is also very useful if you ever decide to sell it! The sky's the limit!

Hope this helps :)
