How do shift-working single parents cope?

Thanks for the A2A Anne!So I’m not a single parent, but I have a good friend who is a single mum, a nurse and is putting herself through med school. The boys’ father doesn't have anything to do with the kids. While she doesn't like to think she copes well, and over-punishes herself for small mistakes, I think she does very well.To start with the boys have not only their doting grandmother, but an army of “aunts” and “uncles” who can pitch in when need be. She’s found her own village to help raise her boys and knows that if she’s tied up backup isnt far away. She’s made it so she’s either at work while the kids are at school, or whole they’re asleep over at their Nan’s but shes always there to wake them up and bring them home from school. My friend copes by being there for her kids- her greatest achievement, while knowing she’s cultivated trust and respect in her social circle to know they’ll be taken care of if she’s held up or has to run off. She hates having to do so, but knows they're in good hands.I’m very proud of my friend. Her boys adore her and they’ve grown into amazing young boys. Shes done it all herself with backup waiting in the wings for emergencies.Ultimately she copes because of her boys, and has florished for it

I am a single parent and I always have to miss work for something. Does anybody know of any online stay at home jobs?

It has a high barrier to entry, but freelance coding on a site like Upwork is both extremely flexible, easy to do at home and well paid. You can teach yourself to code using the free courses available at Codecademy. You will need to treat it like a job, though: caring for children and coding can't be done at the same time. My daughter used to shut my laptop lid when I tried. :)

How does Freud's oedipus complex work in a single parent home?

If you're seriously interested in this subject you should read, "The Assault on Truth, Freud's Suppression of the Seduction Theory," by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson. The Oedipus complex is something Freud made up to cover up his discovery that a lot of his patients had problems because of sexual abuse by their parents. He presented this finding to his peers and everyone flipped out. He realized if he was going to survive professionally he had to come up with something else. So he found a way to blame the child for the problems he saw by concocting this theory that the child traumatizes himself with his own fantasies and desires. It's bunk. 3 year olds don't want sex with their parents.

Why don't single dads have as many programs as single moms?

Hello There... Fellow Single dad here.I agree with the thread starter 100% here.I am 34 years old with Sole Custody of my 7 year old son.His mom walked out on us a number of years back to be with her new man in the airforce. She pays no child support and hasn't see her son in almost 5 years. Not too bitter about it, but it is what it is...When she first walked out, I tried applying for financial support from local programs like WIC.Since WIC is only for Women, Infants, and Children, neither my son nor I was eligible for any support through the local WIC office.Child support is a joke too. After spending countless hours with my attorney and the child support office, I was entitiled to 13 dollars a week.. despite being entitled to this amount, I still have not seen a single dime from my son's mother... With the fees my attorney charges, I figure I will never be able to re-coup the costs through child support.Single mothers can also apply for financial assistance with continued education as well. When I inquired about this with the local university, I was denied due to my gender.Being a single parent is extremely difficult work. We need to be both mom and dad to our children. In the image of society, it seems single mom's have it more difficult than single dads; but nothing could be further than the truth. Single dad's must maintain a career and care for the child without the support of the child's mother. Not saying these programs should not exist to support single moms; but in this day and age of equality, what is offered to single moms should be available to single dads as well.-A struggling single father

Why do working single parents need child support money?

Why do they need child support money if they are working & earning money without it? Many families only have one parent that makes money whether they are single or not. Why are single parents entitled to extra money just because they're single even if they make the same amount as someone who's not single?
