Skeet Shooting Question

Question about Skeet Shooting?

Tyler,

To simply explain it Skeet involves the use of more than one house to throw clay pigeons high, low and at different angles. Trap just uses one low house, and when compared to golf is called the "driving range" of clay pigeon shooting. It gets you ready for skeet. You move around to different "stations" to add more interest. If you are an accomplished shotgun shooter you will eventually adjust and memorize the course. If not you need to watch your lead. Remember to watch you wadding if you miss to see where you were shooing, such as in front, or behind the bird so you can adjust. Good luck.

Skeet shooting scores?

That depends on how quickly you take to it.

Some people are naturals, others aren't.... The first round of trap I shot, I broke around 15x25...almost 4 years later its uncommon for me to miss one and I've run 100's, hit 199x200's, etc.. On the same token, I've seen people who started out hitting maybe 5x25 their first time grow into really good shooters hitting 25x25's, and high 90's out of 100.

Don't get discouraged if you only hit a few clays...the more you practice, the better you'll get. Practice the basics (stance, swing, seeing the target), keep your head on the gun.

Is skeet shooting hard?

You will really enjoy the game of skeet. It is a game of leading the target and swinging the gun.
A much nicer bunch of folks the trap shooting. You are likely to get more help then you want, if you ask questions.

First always be aware that the gun is pointed out between the tarp houses. NEVER stick a shell in the gun UNTIL you are standing on the concrete pad. ALWAYS keep the action open or shotgun broken open.

Now that a few rules of safety have been addressed, you will be MUCH more welcome. Once everyone knows you are good to go and safe. These will quickly become second nature.

Notice on the range there is a stake right in the center of the field. This is IMPORTANT. When on the concrete pad getting set place your feet so that when you point the gun half way between that center stake and the trap house. This is how you stand. NOW you will break the targets at the center stake ALWAYS. Except for the second shot of your doubles. This is so important because as you learn and find your not standing correctly, you have this point of reference. Hitting the targets randomly leaves you no way to help yourself make adjustments.

Some have a natural ability to lead targets other have to learn, BUT the main thing is to NEVER stop the gun swing as you shoot. Bring the gun to your eye, NOT your eye to the gun.

I highly suggest asking if you might walk along with a relay of shooters. Stand behind and near to see how they stand, and where they are pointing the gun as they call for the target.

Shooting shotguns is much different then a rifle. Use the shotgun like a garden hose, or maybe a full auto chasing down a moving target. Swing through the target. You will really enjoy skeet shooting, lots of fun. I hope you want to continue. ( that almost goes without mention )

Thank you for your service, glad to have you home.

Why do I suck at shooting skeet?

I am a great shot with an open sight rifle (compared to the knuckleheads I shoot with), and a good shot with a pistol. I can usually outshoot most of my buddies with both but when we start shooting skeet I fail miserably. I have streaks when I do decent but usually even a new shooter will outshoot me. It is extremely frustrating. I am very competitive and hate getting dominated. Any ideas why I suck? Is there common mistakes that are made when shooters transition from fixed targets to moving skeet? Any suggestions on how to improve my skeet shooting would be appreciated.

What type ammo should i use for skeet shooting?

I am going skeet shooting with some friends from work and i have never been before. I have a 20 gauge remington model 1100 that my dad gave me when I was a kid. What type shells should I use. They talk about all different brands, but I am unsure what to buy. I know it should be bird shot but is there any specific brand?

Do you need to use a choke for skeet shooting?

Most Skeet shooters normally use short barrel open bore guns. SK1, SK2, IMP CYL, CYL, are common. Not *many* folks that I shoot Skeet with use MOD or tighter chokes.

But most Skeet shooters I know switch out their chokes and use different constrictions while moving between stations.

Why are wires involved in skeet shooting and what is skeet shooting?

Skeet shooting uses small, breakable targets, which are usually launched into the air. They are then shot at with a shotgun. When hit, they break apart. Some launchers are completely manual, hand held, and used by a swing of the arm. Some manual launchers are spring-loaded, and operated by cocking and loading them with one or two 'clay pigeons', then operated by pulling a lever, often using a cord. They can be adjusted to throw high or low. There are electric powered launchers, which can be loaded with a lot of targets, then remotely controlled, to throw single or double targets either high or low. Most of these use a remote control connected to the main unit with a multi-wire cord. It would be simple to have wireless remotes, too. There are some who shoot at stationary targets, which are supported in stake-type holders made of sturdy wire and stuck in the ground. You are scored on how many you hit.P.S: they used to use real pigeons, and a very few still do. They release them to be shot. I have no use for flying rats, and believe if you shoot creatures to kill them, you should have a reason , such as food, or protection, unless they are vermin of some sort. Killing for amusement is not normal behavior.
