So If More People Have Dropped Out Of The Job Hunt Is Unemployment Really Going Down

Why is society so harshly judgmental towards unemployed people (especially welfare recipients)?

Do we assume that everyone who is unemployed/on welfare is a lazy bum who enjoys sitting at home on their butts and living off the government?

Finding a suitable job is not easy and takes time. For some people, they are ashamed to be on the dole and want to work...not only to make money, but to give themselves a sense of purpose and preserve their self-esteem.

But, a lot of people can't *buy* a job, whether for lack of personal connections, poor interviewing skills, or because they are discriminated against for their age, race, appearance, or having a liberal arts degree.

Having once worked at a welfare office and dealt with people in these circumstances, I feel that I have a better understanding of the situation.

This is not to say that there is plenty of unemployment fraud and welfare abuse. But, I've found that the vast majority of people who are unemployed (or on welfare) are honest folks who want to work, but simply can't land that interview.

Thoughts anyone?

Is it really difficult to get a job these days or are people going to remain unemployed forever?

In some areas, getting hired is getting easier.Consider the blue collar trades in America. They have work coming out of their eyeballs, yet they cannot find anybody. Because, as a few owners stated, nobody can pass the drug test.Other areas have piles of jobs open, but they need qualified people. You may be one course, or one program away from a job which is desperately looking for somebody even semi-talented.Consider one more factor…people are dropping out of life. In America, we have opioid overdoses, alcohol abuse, overeating, and a general sense of discontent from the middle class down. For some jobs, all you really have to do is show up and have a slightly pleasant attitude. That’s how low the bar has been set.

How should you explain an unemployment gap in your resume?

Number two is not true, as there are plenty of good legitimate reasons for the gap. (educaiton, pregnancy, self employment, travel etc.) So, no employer will just throw out a resume for no good reason. They are trying to find the talent to fill a position. Why waste a talent because of a silly, non-productive policy?

Second, no, no one should try to cover up something in neither a resume nor an application. Some things are highlighted and stressed, others are not. But never, NEVER cover up or lie about something. If you are caught at it, THAT resume gets tossed.

Not mentioning that 90 day job is a cover up. Better to list it, and the dates and let the interviewer ask, if he's interested. Especially do not omit it in the application. That is a legal document, with a signature attesting to the fact that everything in is is true. If it asks for an employment history and it is left out, it is a form of perjury.

If the history on the application does not match up with the resume, THAT is a red flag, and may result in the application being dropped. Just this year, an applicant at my company came it after being called for an interview. She brought in some fresh copies of her resume and I noted that her most recent job was missing from one of the copies. The missing one seemed to show the most relevant experience, so I asked her why it was not mentioned in one of the copies. She gave a runnaround, but I finally got her to admit that she was terminated, as she said, "mutually." I called her previous supervisor who told me she was terminated "for cause."

It's OK to fine tune an individual resume for the specific company or job. But a lie is a lie and there are few excuses for that.

Unemployment happens. Its a part of our industrial life. A year and a half is only a little bit of a long time.

I am over 50+yo and recently unemployed in Silicon Valley. How do I get back to working?

I brought up your question with a friend and he said “imaginary world”. My response was “how so”. Now he saw your question and then your details. His response was “how many jobs are like that?”.What that got me thinking is that your approach of wanting to take on challenges is admirable but may not work in the hiring process. It’s more behavior but doesn't sink the deal.So my thought is more nail down what you did in the past. What jobs you can do. At 50+ you must have done a bunch of things. Dredge that lake for the specific skills and accomlishments you have. I don’t think that everyone will just not hire you because you are over 50 if you can provide a fit based on I can do this. Now most jobs are not exact fits. They always post those job listings that want a set of 5 skills and 5 more that are desired but not required. Get less philosophical about your desire to be generalist and knock down what you actually can do and let the generalist and taking on challenges shine more when you give examples of how you work in the interview process. As to work life balance you simply have to ask the question about work life balance, but if you need a job expect to work 40–45 if necessary. And if needed pick up a new skill. You’re not working so strategize what you can learn to move you to some jobs and don’t be afraid to think of jobs to go after that you can leverage your skills in even if you never did that job.Job hunting is making an argument. You want play and people to talk to you. Be very imaginative if necessary. Maybe in the end the job offer that comes up is something that makes a lot of sense based on your past however right now be an inventor. I know you’re over 50 but the advice I heard from a much younger man still applies. Fake it till you make it if needed. That means let your imagination see what you can do and if you’re not sure stop worrying. Fake it. Things work out and if they hire you they see something. You may tend to conservatism not wanting to be an actor willing to say any number of things like a 20 year old who doesn't exactly know what he can do. You need to do improv now. You need to be flexible. As you get further along things then solidify more.

Is it true that the unemployment numbers are fudged and the real rate is around 10%?

Yes...actually the fudginig started under Reagan, then was added to under Bush I not sure what fudging Clinton added. Bush II stops counting people as unemployed if the take a part time job, or unemployment benefits run out.

Will the unemployment office know if I turn down a job offer?

I have been unemployed since the middle of march and have been looking for jobs ever since. So far i have been unsucessful finding a good job. But earlier today I got a call from a company that i previously interviewed with, one that i have very little interest in and is planning to make me an offer tomorrow. I am pretty sure they are gonna offer me a lot lower than what I was making at my last job. I want to hold out for another job but I am worried they might contact the unemployment office.

I dont know how it works but I am assuming the worst, that companies notify government agencies when offers are turned down. and then the Unemployment office comes after me because every week i have to fill out an online payment request and one of the questions is: have you turned down any job offers this week? Technically i would have to lie to continue to get payments.

Unemployment and Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Hello I'm 20 years old, I dropped out of high school, cause I had no chance of graduation. There's no jobs hiring for miles, and I have no vehicle. Additionally I've asked people to drive me to the dentist, and won't cause I can't pay gas money, or just "Can't afford it". I'm not eating enough to donate plasma, as I'm 30lbs under weight, and skinny as hell.

I'm in a really tough boat that I don't deserve to be in, and my wisdom teeth are hurting more everyday. I'm forced to eat hard foods, cause that's what my step father will only buy. He also knows my situation, and still hasn't done anything to help, instead he spent $2,500 on a new Mac Pro, buys new maps for stupid FPS games, and he just got a new Android phone.

My grandfather recently died, and now he's talking about sending my sister upto Las Vegas for his memorial while I'm still in terrible pain.

I've called multiple dental places to see if they'll accept monthly payments like $20 a month overtime to pay it off, as I gotta work with what I have, and I can't find ANY that'll do that. I can't even find a place that'll do a free examination. Can anyone help? PLEASE???????????

Is it ok to take any job while unemployed or wait for what you think you like?

Personally, I think in this day and age, you need to take the job. The longer you are unemployed nowadays, the harder it is. Survey after survey has indicated that people who are out of work longer than six months have a very difficult time finding work-employers are not considering people who are unemployed for long periods of time.Scary.The days of being picky and choosy are, at least for now, over. Yes, I know people tell you to chase your dreams. But you also need to live. And, it is harder to drop out of the workforce than it used to be. You don't want to be unemployed for more than a few months if you can help it.Take the job. If you don't like it, at least you are able to find another job while employed. You won't have the stress of looking while eating through your savings, you'll have time to think about what you want. Get that idea that working and earning a living is "wasting time". It is not wasting time to be able to provide for you and yours while you think about what you want to do.
