Sociology Or Ad- Maths As An Additional Subject

I passed in the additional subject but failed in one of the main subjects. I had six subjects so I am declared passed. Can I still appear for the compartment exam to improve my marks in the main subject?

Depends on you.If you are pass in 5 subjects and failed in one of your main subject, then you are declared successful. No doubt there. If you want, then you can give compartment exam during the same year. Contact your principal and apply for reappearing in respective exam as soon as possible. Also, if you don’t want to clear and if you are satisfied with your result, then don’t appear for re-exam.Now, the question comes whether you should or you shouldn’t. It totally depends on what future you are planning for yourself. If that subject is required their, they do give re-exam. And if your plans don’t require that subject, then leave it.Hope it helps. All the best!!!!PS: Mostly, main subjects are required for getting admission in graduate degree courses (in most of the cases).

Which additional subject can I take in the arts stream?

You can choose any optional subject as your additional subject except the subject you have already chosen as optional one. But it will not be taught in your school, you have to prepare for it yourself. So, some additional subjects are:-Physical EducationComputer SciencePsychologySociologyDance, etc.But it also depends upon your school that which subjects are available there. And at last choose a subject that you can study yourself and most importantly you have interest in it and which will be helpful in your future. All The Best :)

In a BA (social science), can I take maths as my optional subject?

Should I choose Maths and Physics as my optional subjects for UPSC because I have an engineering background or should I go with the so called relatively easier subjects such as Sociology, Psychology or Commerce?

Following your dreams is always a good job, and when you already decided to follow your’s nothing else matter just keep moving toward the direction of your dream and you will be celebrating there very soon.as you are confused at this stage whether to choose mathematics or physics , or go for any humanities subject; i am all here to solve out your problem.I was at same stage you are on as i also did engineering and never ever found humanities interesting nor i was outstanding performer in maths or physic but when the time came to choose one my heart were saying “MATHEMATICS” YES THIS IS THE ONE ON WHICH YOU CAN DO YOUR BEST . I searched out for coaching, for my luck there were one, what else i need. Books!! ohh there are more than you need in market on each and every topic. Checked previous years paper and found my self saying wow i know all of it, though was not able to solve but had confidence that i will make it.so what the point is? find your hearts calling, listen to your heart, what it like as you listened before going for UPSC. Nothing is easy or hard its all your mentality if you are good at something you find it easier while for others it may be hard nut to crack but if you are not good at something you can always anytime get grip over it, HARD WORK with SMART WORK always pay bro. There are positives and negatives for everything, so for optional subjects in UPSC . There will be some subjects which will be helping or sharing syllabus with GS portion, some subjects taking less time to prepare while other taking months with regular ward work. But you should not give any attention over this what you need is just to find the subject with which you are comfotable.here are some points which i think can help youchoose 2 or 3 subject and go through the syllabus of these subjects than read out any book or online content related to each subject(you don’t need to read full book just grasp the idea what it is all about) .Search, what the success ratio is related to these subjects in final list, how many candidate are appearing with those subjects, and the nature of the subject whether its dynamic of static.see if there are any good teacher and material available in market nearby you.Than take one day and analyse each subject individually, consider its pro and cons.At last take your decision without thinking much cause you never find anything having pros only.Hope it helpsthanks for A2Aall the best, always here to help.

Should i do LCVP as an additional subject for my leaving cert ?

Yes you should definitely take L.C.VP. I just received my results this year and included it in my points. I too took 7 subjects all higher level with the exception of Irish. It is really worth while. It is not to difficult you do a portfolio consisting of your C.V, a career investigation, reports on company's and a recorded interview. You also sit an exam based on the world of work and basic bits of business. People say it is hard to get the distinction if you don't do business but i received my distinction and never studied business. A lot of it is common sense. So my advice is take it. Good look in your studies for 2012.

What is "Sociology" really about?

Ever wonder why one ethnic group is more successful than another? Or why capitalism first rose to prominence in northern europe and not, say, africa? Those are the types of questions sociologists seek to answer. They attempt to explain and predict social phenomena. This means you'll study groups of people, not individuals (normally).

You'll study social theories like conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, feminist theories, etc. You'll also cover research methods (which can be a surprisingly fun lesson in logic and critical thinking), as well as social statistics.

The main thing I have appreciated about studying sociology is that you will realize the many ways society may affect your views or decisions as an individual. This can be a humbling or freeing experience.

As for jobs... haha Good luck. You could go to graduate school and be a sociology professor. Get a teaching certificate (an extra six months of school), and teach bratty high school kids the rest of your life. Work a job entirely unrelated to your degree. I have heard stories of people working as market researchers and things like that, but you'd probably have to go to grad school if you wanted a shot at a job like that.

Differences between psychology and sociology: Sociology focuses on group behavior. Psychology focuses more on the individual. Sociologists do more research with tools like questionnaires (which develop statistics). I'm not sure how psychologists research, but I'm positive they don't use questionnaires. Probably clinical observation. Sociology will teach you how society functions. Psychology will teach you how an individual's brain functions.

As for those critical of sociology, it is truly meant to be an objective field. Some of the greatest western minds have involved themselves in the study like Durkheim, Rousseau, Weber, etc. Sociological research can be skewed by one's opinion, but that is why we have the peer review system. It is true there are a great many leftist profs and students in the field, but don't let that deter you. They're usually the least intelligent ones, so it's easy to ignore them. We need people of all perspectives!
