Why do so many female Japanese singers sound younger than they are?
Much of the popular music produced in Japan is driven top-down, rather than bottom-up. The Beach Boys and similar groups in the US proved that it could be much more profitable to “push” a given group onto an identified market, rather than wait for a bunch of musicians to gain a little momentum after practicing in their uncle’s garage for a few years. To be sure, there are groups like Galileo Galilei (from Wakkanai, Hokkaido, just up the road from here!) who get signed up by a large record company after they’ve proven their chops. But these are the exceptions that prove the rule: music producers dictate musical tastes (from the top) more than music consumers demand new musical trends (from the bottom) in Japan.Many (not all) of these producers have decided that the sexual allure of a young woman who is actually past the age of consent, but sounds as if she were much too young to be available, is part of the successful formula for a financially successful album. The result is that young women actually compete to develop a singing style and timbre that makes the listener think he (boys are the focus demographic, remember) is listening to “the forbidden fruit,” a girl who is too young to date. There are no boundaries to a young man’s fantasies, however.The other side of this coin is the young woman who is obviously of age, and belts out bruising ballads about themes that “only mature guys could really appreciate.” (I’m looking at you, Ochi Shiho…) Some of these singers are an acquired taste- a few go long way. So the semi-recent hybrid of putting dozens of singers into “forbidden fruit salads” seems to be the present and the future of female performers in J pops. AKB 48 now “graduate” members who (predictably) have relatively short careers in the mature, solo market. There have been over 130 singers in AKB 48 to date- how many female singers can you name from North America or Western Europe?And this is not just a group of old fogeys foisting their private perversions onto the public. Johnny���s and other ultra-successful music producers have done the same thing with boy-toy bands as well. But it is a common theme among both groups to have a recognizable formula appear and repeat; 20-somethings who sound like they’re 13 will probably be all the rage among J pops for the foreseeable future.
Is it weird for a guy to listen to female singers?
Absolutely not. There are many very rich male composers who have written songs for women to sing. Paul Williams, an extremely talented song writer, came up with some of the major hits of the seventies, many of which were made top sellers by women singers. Baby Face is another prolific songwriter who has made many women singers rich because he liked the sound of female voices singing beautiful love songs. I started out singing very young. At the age of 4-6 my favorite singers were Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Andy Williams because my mother played them on her stereo. Over the years I developed a wide repetoire of songs by listening to both male and female singers. You may have an ear for music and hidden talent that you aren't even aware of yet. Don't listen to your friends. You could be an overnight success in the world of music by sticking with what sounds good to you. Perhaps you could become a skilled keyboardist if not a composer. Follow your talents and your dreams. You may be laughing all the way to the bank!

Does Iran have any popular female singers?
Like Kamyar said, Googosh is definitely the first person who comes to mind. She’s HUGELY popular and pretty much defines Iranian music. It’s hard to describe how popular Googoosh is… she’s like The Beatles combined with Madonna. Since she was forced to flee the country during the revolution her already-high status was elevated to martyr levels.Beyond that, Hayedeh, Leila Forouhar, and Mahasti are the biggest names. Not as big as Googoosh but close. Growing up, I heard these names so often they might as well have been family members.It’s important to note that these are old guard pre-revolution artists, all of whom fled the country and continued their careers outside of it (although they are obviously still obsessively consumed within it). Unfortunately, in the present day there are many restrictions about women’s behavior in Iran, which extend to singing and performing. As I understand it, women are not permitted to sing solo in public or in the presence of men who are not their husband or family. This pretty much prevents the existence of many current/new popular female singers.I texted my cousin who lives in Iran asking this question, she said the only person she can think of is Sogand, who is apparently relatively popular. Who are some good modern French singers, that young people in France or Quebec or any French speaking country listen to?
(Stromae is from Belgium, but never mind:))One of the trendiest french singer for kids is Kendji Girac, 19, who won the 3rd Season of the talent show The Voice last year in France. His inspirations are from Andalousia, gitano music. Not my type of music but kids love it. Rap and Hip Hop are also very big in France, one of the most loved singers for kids is Black M, formerly in the controversial rap/dance band "Sexion d'assault". I have to admit that his hit single "sur ma route/on my road" is quite catchy. He will be under the spotlight a lot this coming weeks because one of his songs is on the soundtrack of the french movie "Le prince Aladin" with very popular and funny young french actor Kev Adams.But to highlight artists that have a talent comparable to Stromae I would rather recommend you to listen to someone like Julien Doré. He won the talent show Nouvelle Star in 2007 and is now a respected artist with poetic and ironic lyrics.
