I’m planning a trip to Los Angeles. Where should I stay, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, or Los Angeles? What hotels would you recommend?

Hello — the answer to your question would certainly depend upon the experience you want to have, as Los Angeles is quite vast and offers varied experiences, depending on where you will spend most of your time. Until last year, I owned and managed vacation rental properties in Hollywood and West Los Angeles. Hollywood is obviously the most popular for visitors. It is centrally located and offers all of the favorite attractions for tourists. Staying here keeps you in the midst of the Hollywood cashe (staying close to Sunset/Vine Or Hollywood/Highland puts you well within reach of the Hollywood strip and its main attractions, as well as food, convenience stores, and shopping; this is also the most convenient location if you won’t be renting a vehicle). You’ll be opting for a quieter stay if you choose Los Angeles Proper or Beverly Hills, and you’s definitely benefit by renting a car, as getting to other attraction areas from here will require frequent commuting. Staying in Beverly Hills, in my opinion, may offer luxury in accommodations but won’t deliver in terms of convenient access to activities; and while it may be high-end, I wouldn’t say it’s as trendy as, say West Hollywood or even our beach communities (lots of “old money” in Beverly Hills and perhaps not the most free-spirited or energetic). My recommendation: if you’re traveling with youth, consider Hollywood. A group that wants to be closer to outside dining and nightly strolls along Santa Monica Blvd and the bars of Sunset Strip? Consider West Hollywood. If you want to experience coastal living with perhaps only a day or two of all-day sight-seeing? Try our coastal communities: Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu. You’ll pay a little more but it is so very worth it.

What does gentrification look like in China?

This answer was written by Grade 11 students from Carolyn’s class at TongshengHu International school in Changsha, Hunan China. This is part of a discussion series to understand the opinions and views of Chinese highschool students on societal issues in China. Most of the gentrification in China, like Changsha, used to be residential houses or communities. As these are poor local people, the government planned to rebuild their communities by building shopping malls or cultural monuments. Thus, those old architectures are demolished and the government gave the local people financial benefits as compensation. Some people may agree with it since it may make local people who are being evicted wealthy. Other people however, do not agree because it may not be as convenient for them to commute to work or school or to access other services. For instance, in 2002 the Shenzhen government wanted to build a high-speed train station in a rural area, but that area had many traditional buildings and old residents. So, the government had to give financial compensation to the local people who live there and also had to communicate with the public through community meetings. However, if the residents didn’t want to accept the compensation, or thought it was too low, the government couldn’t evict them. So the government decided to increase the compensation to 1 500 000 000 RMB to convince that family to move on. In China, gentrification itself is positive, but has many issues and shortcomings that must be adjusted by the government. The cost of gentrification is steadily rising, but it’s still seen as necessary to advance the power and beauty of China.
